On the new top 40 this week there are just 3 new entries.The highest of them at Number 4 for Clean Bandit with ‘Stronger’, Michael Calfan with ‘Treasured Soul ‘charts at Number 17 and Jack U featuring Justin Bieber with ‘Where Are U Now’ enters at Number 32, more on all of these later this week. As for the top of the chart it is as you were last week , the top 3 remains unchanged, Wiz Khalifa holds on to the top spot for a 2nd week with ‘See You Again’, Omi with ‘Cheerleader’ stays at Number 2 and Jess Glynne with her ex Number 1 ‘Hold My Hand’ stays at Number 3.

Clean Bandit have the highest new entry this week at Number 4 with ‘Stronger’. It is the 4th hit single to be taken from their debut Album called ‘New Eyes’. It was back in February 2014 that they had their biggest success when ‘Rather Be’ spent 4 weeks at Number 1.The 2 other hits from the Album were ‘Extraordinary’ peaking at Number 5 and ‘Real Love’ with vocals from Jess Glynne reaching Number 2. In total they have now had 5 hits as the non Album single ‘Mozart’s House’ made Number 17 back in 2013.

Dance music is always the main staple of the UK top 40 as you can always rely on at least 1 new dance track to appear on the chart every week. This week we welcome Parisian dance music producer Michael Calfan at Number 17 with ‘Treasured Soul’. The song is released on the record label owned by fellow French dance music producer Bob Sinclair called ‘Yellow Productions’. This track is the 2nd release and 1st hit for Calfan, his debut track is called ‘Resurrection’.

New into the top 40 this week at Number 32 is Jack U featuring Justin Bieber with ‘Where Are U Now’. Jack U is the name given to the latest project that brings together 2 of dance music’s biggest names Skrillex and Diplo, ‘Where Are U Now ‘is taken from their Album ‘Skrillex And Diplo Present Jack U’. As well as Justin Bieber other guest vocalists on the Album include Kiesza, 2 Chainz and Aluna George. The track with Kiesza called ‘Take U There ‘was released as the Albums 1st single last year.

For the 5th time this year the UK top 40 has a new best seller.

25 year old Jessica Hannah Glynne from Muswell Hill London achieves a 3rd Number 1 single from only 5 attempts. She first came to the public’s attention  in February 2014 when as featured artist on ‘Rather Be’ with Clean Bandit she spent 4 weeks at Number 1, this was quickly followed only 1 month later when she once again topped the chart as featured artist on the Route 94 track ‘My Love’. In June last year she released her debut solo single ‘Right Here’ which went on to peak at Number 6. Then in November she reached Number 2 with ‘Real Love’ this time Clean Bandit were the featured artist. The new Number 1 ‘Hold My Hand’ is her 1st solo chart topper, her debut Album is due later this year.

Sigma first came to prominence last year when both of their singles reached Number 1. The first one was ‘Nobody to Love’ which sampled the Kanye West song ‘Bound 2’ and the 2nd was ‘Changing’ featuring the vocals of Paloma Faith. Sigma are Drum and Bass duo Cameron Edwards and Joe Lenzie who first met at Leeds University, their new single ‘Higher’ has entered the top 40 this week at Number 12 and features the vocals of Labrinth, who charts for a 9th time. As featured artist he appeared on Tinie Tempahs 2010 Number 1 ‘Pass Out’ and also on the same artist’s song ‘Frisky’ which reached Number 2 in the same year.

The new single from Rihanna was released as late as only last Thursday which goes to some way explaining its low chart entry at Number 29, you would expect it to climb significantly next week. The song is called ‘Bitch Better Have My Money’ and is taken from her forth coming 8th studio Album of which is still unnamed. This new song is the Albums 2nd release as the debut song ‘Four Five Seconds’ continues to sell well at this week’s Number 4 having peaked  last week at Number 3.Rihanna has now achieved a very impressive 31 hit singles since ‘Pon De Replay’ gave her a 1st hit 10 years ago when it reached Number 2. She has also charted a further 11 times as featured artist.

In total there are 4 new entries on this week’s top 40 and the new song at Number 30 is from KSI featuring P Money with ‘Lambourghini’. KSI is the stage name of 21 year old Olajide Olatunji who was born in Watford but is of Nigerian descent, P money is the stage name of English Grime MC Paris Moore-Williams who comes from Lewisham South London, both artists chart for the 1st time.

The power of Comic Relief has helped Sam Smith ft John Legend with ‘Lay Me Down’ to become the 4th different Number 1 single of 2015. This is the 14th chart topper for a Red Nose Day song, dating back to 1986 when the very 1st Comic Relief single from Cliff Richard ft The Young Ones with a version of ‘Living Doll’ hit the top. ‘Lay Me Down’ was the 1st single released from Sam Smiths debut Album (‘In The Lonely Hour’) back in 2013 when it only reached Number 46, after Smith found success the song was re- released as the 5th single release from the Album this time peaking at Number 15. This new version gives John Legend a 1st UK Number 1, ‘All of Me’ peaked at Number 2 last year.

The 2nd highest new entry on this week’s top 40 is at Number 3 for Flo Rida ft Sage The Gemini  with  ‘GDFR’ (abbreviation for Going Down For Real).It is the 1st single release from his forth coming 5th studio Album due in April to be called ‘My House’. Flo Rida,s real name is Tramar Lacel Dillard and he comes from Carol City, Florida, he is 35 years old. His debut single ‘Low’ peaked at Number 2 back in 2007, as main artist he has had 3 Number ‘1s with ‘Right Round’, ‘Club Can’t Handle Me’ and ‘Good Feeling’. He has also been to Number 1 twice as a featured artist on the Alexandra Burke song ‘Bad Boys’ and the Olly Murs hit ‘Troublemaker’. Sage The Gemini whose real name is Dominic Wynn Woods is from California, he is also one of the co writers of the song, this is his 1st UK chart entry.

Usher Raymond is back, his new single entered the UK top 40 this week at Number 8 it is called’ I Don’t Mind ‘and features the services of Juicy J. Usher is one of R and B’s superstars and this single adds even further distinction to his ever growing discography. His 1st UK hit was the 1997 Number 1 ‘You Make Me Wanna’, he has gone on to have a further 3 chart toppers, ‘Yeah’ in 2004,’Burn’ in 2004 and ‘OMG’ in 2010. In total he has now had 23 top 40 singles as lead artist and a further 5 as a featured artist, Juicy j is an American rapper he is best known to date in the UK for providing the rap on Katy Perry’s  2013 Number 4 single ‘Dark Horse’.

Marcus Mumford, Winston Marshall, Ben Lovett and Ted Dwane are better known as British folk rock band Mumford and Sons. To date they have released 2 Albums, ‘Sigh No More (UK Number 1) and’ Babel’ (UK Number 20), the 3rd Album ‘Wilder Mind’ is due out on May 4th. The 1st single from the new Album is called’ Believe’ and it is a new entry at Number 20 this week, music critics say it is a departure from their trademark acoustic sound as this new song features electric guitars. This is the 4th top 40 hit for the band ‘I Will Wait’ back in 2012 achieved their highest placing to date reaching Number 12.

This week Scottish dance music producer Calvin Harris achieved a 6th top 40 hit single from his current Album ‘Motion’ when ‘Pray To God’ charted at Number 36. This is Harris’s 2oth top 40 single as lead artist, he has also had a further 3 as a featured artist. This current track features American Pop/Rock all girl group HAIM who also receive credits as co authors of the song.They have released 1 Album to date called ‘Days Are Gone’ which produced 4 top 40 singles, the most successful being ‘The Wire’ reaching Number 16.

It’s week 10 of the UK top 40 of 2015 and for only the 3rd time this year there is a change at the top.

Ellie Goulding gives way to the electronic trio Years and Years, who with their song ‘King’ get the 1287th different chart topper since the very 1st chart back in November 1952.

Years and Years are Olly Alexander, Mikey Goldsworthy and Emre Turkmen. They formed in London back in 2010, ‘King’ is their 6th single, their previous release ‘Desire’ peaked at Number 22 last year. They have also charted once as featured artist with The Magician last year on the Number 7 single ‘Sunlight’.

You could say that Marlon Roudette was born to do the job as he is the son of top British songwriter/producer Cameron Mcvey and his step mother is Nenah Cherry .He has the 2nd highest new entry on this week’s top 40 at Number 7 with ‘When the Beat Drops. He is already a very successful  artist abroad scoring a Number 1 single back in 2011 with ‘New Age’ in Germany ,Austria and Switzerland and this his 1st UK solo hit has also topped the chart in Gemany. Before going solo Roudette was part of the duo Mattafix with Preetesh Hirji, they had a hit back in 2005 when’ Big City Life’ reached Number 15.

Dance music is the one constant on the UK top 40 and there seems to be new songs of that genre entering the chart every week and this week is no exception. The new entry at Number 13 is from 22 year old Sussex born dance music producer Alex Adair with ‘Make Me Feel Better ‘and this is his first taste of chart success .If you go to You Tube you will be able to find many famous artists songs he has remixed including 2 current chart hits, the Imagine Dragons song ‘I Bet My Life’ and Ed Sheeran’s ‘Thinking Out Loud’.

Kanye West becomes the 1st artist this year to have 3 hit singles and Paul McCartney the 1st to have 3 hits as featured artist as ‘All Day’ enters the UK top 40 at Number 18, the song also credits Allen Kingdom and Theopilus London as featured artists. The song is the 3rd single release from West’s upcoming 7th studio Album to be called ‘So Help Me God’, all 3 songs (the other 2 were ‘Only One’ and’ Four Five Seconds’) were co written and played on by Paul McCartney. This was the song West performed recently at the Brit Awards where he was joined on stage by UK artists including Skepta and Wiley.

Imagine Dragons are an American Indie Rock band from Las Vegas, the 4 members are Dan Reynolds, Daniel Wayne Sermon, Daniel Platzman and Ben Mckee .To date they have released 2 studio Albums, ‘Night Visions’ in 2012 and ‘Smoke And Mirrors’ in 2015. The current Album which is already a former Number 1 was released on February 17th, so far it has produced 1 hit single, ‘I Bet My Life’ peaking at Number 27. Their debut album Night Visions (UK Number 2) produced 5 top 40 singles including ‘Demons’ which reached Number 13 back in 2013, now in its 71st week in the top 100 it has re-entered the top 40 at Number 33.

Ellie Goulding holds the top spot for a 3rd consecutive week with ‘Love Me Like You Do’. In fact all top 3 singles this week are the same as last with the  Hozier song  ‘Take Me To Church’ at 2 and Mark Ronson  ft Bruno Mars with ‘Uptown Funk’ at 3.

The big climber is The Weeknd at Number 4 climbing from last week’s Number 10 with ‘Earned It’ which is one of the songs featured on the ‘50 Shades Of Grey’ soundtrack. Kanye West with Rihanna and Sir Paul McCartney are a non mover at Number 5 with ‘Four FIve Seconds’ and last week’s highest new entry from DJ Fresh with ‘Gravity’ drops 2 places to Number 6. Maroon 5 with ‘Sugar’ continues to go in the right direction climbing 4 to Number 7 and Avicci with ‘The Nghts’ is up 1 to 8. Completing this week’s top 10 is Charli XCX with Rita Ora dropping 1 to 9 with ‘Doing It’ and ‘Thinking Out Loud’ from Ed Sheeran dropping 3 places to 10.

A total of 4 new entries on the top 40 this week, with the highest being at Number 17 for Luvbug with ‘Revive’ (Say Something). Luvbug are a British electronic trio consisting of Marvin Humes, The White N3rd and Jkay. This is their 2nd top 20 single following on from the success of ‘Resonance’ (Number 14) last October,  this new track features uncredited vocals from Mark Asari. They are currently working on an Album due for release later on this year.

New in at Number 20 is David Guetta ft Emeli Sande with ‘What I Did for Love’. This is the 5th single release from Guettas  6th studio Album ‘Listen’, the previous 4 were ‘Shot Me Down’ (Number 4), ‘Bad’ (Number 22), ‘Lovers On The Sun’ (Number 1) and ‘Dangerous’ (Number 5).As a featured artist Emeli Sande has now charted on 8 occasions, with ‘Naughty Boy’(3 times), Chipmunk, Professor Green, Labrinth  and Rudimental.

Style is the 3rd single release from Taylor Swifts current Album ‘1989’, following on from ‘Shake It Off’ (Number 2) and ‘Blank Space’ (Number 4), the song is a new entry at Number 36. In America on  (Billboard) all 3 tracks have made the top 10 with ‘Shake It Off’ and ‘Blank Space’ both reaching Number 1, in the UK Taylor Swift still awaits her 1st chart topper.

The 4th and final new entry is at Number 36 for Florence and the Machine with ‘What Kind Of Man’. The song is the 1st single to be released from her forthcoming 3rd studio Album to be called How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful’.  This new song gives Florene Welch an 8th top 40 single, her most successful song to date was the Number 1 single ‘Spectrum’ back in 2012.

We may be in the 7th week of the New Year but in music chart terms things are only just beginning to settle down into a normal routine. Throughout the month of January there were only 7 new songs entering  the top 40 as record labels were reluctant to release new material during that time, but with a further 16 new entries  so far in February we have so much more to listen to.

7 weeks in and only 2 different Number 1’s. Ellie Goulding deservedly holds onto the top spot for a 2nd week with the ‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ song ‘Love Me Like You Do’. This is her 2nd chart topper after ‘Burn’ gave her a 1st back in 2013, the aforementioned Album goes straight in at Number 1 on the compilation Album chart.

Hoziers remarkable chart run continues as he now achieves this week’s runner up spot with ‘Take Me To Church’ now in its 29th charting week, the song has also peaked at Number 2 (on Billboard) in America. Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars with ‘Uptown Funk’ has to settle for the Number 3 spot, the song is the current Billboard Number 1 and of course is the longest running chart topper this decade in the UK  at 7 weeks.

In total this week we have 6 new entries, the highest is at Number 4 for DJ Fresh ft  Ella Eyre with ‘Gravity’. DJ Fresh is the pseudonym of 37 year old Drum and Bass producer Daniel Stein, this is his 9th hit single and the 5th time he has reached the top 5, all of his singles are collaborations and this current hit features Ella Eyre whose birth name is Ella Mcmahon, she was raised in West London. She has had 2 hit singles as lead artist to date, Last year with’ If I Go’(Number 16) and ‘Comeback(Number 14),she is also no stranger to success as a featured artist as she was the vocalist on Rudimentals  2013 Number 1 ‘Waiting All Night’.

New in at Number 6 is the collaboration between singer Chris Brown and rapper Tyga with the track ‘Ayo’. This song is the 1st release from their forthcoming Album ‘Fan To Fan’ where all songs will be duets, ‘Fan To Fan’ will be Chris Browns 7th official Album release. Tyga an acronym ( thank you god always) is 25 year old Michael Stevenson from San Fernando Valley California and unlike many other  rappers  he says he had it easy growing up, he admits his mother drove a Range Rover. Tyga has released 3 Albums to date none of which have charted on the UK  top 40, as lead artist he charted with Young Money and Lloyd back in 2009 with ‘Bedrock’(Number 9),his best know solo track to date is ‘Rack City’(Number 39 )in 2011 but a Number 7 hit on Billboard. He is also known in the UK for providing the rap to Tulisa,s  2012 Number 11 single ‘Live It Up ‘and for being one of the rappers on the Chris Brown hit from last year, ‘Loyal’.

There is 1 more new entry in to the new top 10 this week and it is at Number 8 for Charli XCX ft Rita Ora with ‘Doing It’. The track is taken from Charli XCX  third studio Album ‘Sucker’ which was named best pop Album of 2014 by ‘Rolling Stone’ magazine and 6th best Album of the year overall. Despite such critical rave reviews the Album has only peaked at Number 28 on Billboard and has failed in all major markets around the world, to date it is still awaiting its official UK release. Singles wise in the UK this is the 3rd solo hit for Charli XCX as ‘Boom Clap’ peaked at Number 6 and ‘Break The Rules’ at Number 35, both last year  She also has 2 hits as featured artist, providing vocals on ‘I Love It’ with Icona Pop (Number 1 -2012) and ‘Fancy’ with Iggy Azalea(Number 5 -2014).Rita Ora has now featured as guest artist on 5 top 40 singles if you include the Band Aid track from last year.

Ne-Yo is back in the 40 at Number 14 with ‘Coming With You’, his real name is Shaffer Chimere Smith and he is an American from Camden, Arkansas, he is 32.The track is taken from his upcoming 6th Album to be called ‘Non Fiction’, he also previously released a best of back in 2009. As main artist this is his 11th top 40 single, 4 of them have been to Number 1. He has also had a further 7 as featured artist one of which was the 2011 chart topper with Pitbull, ‘Give Me Everything’.

New in at Number 22 is Dutch music producer Bakermat with his 4th single release called ‘Teach Me’ it is taken from his forth coming debut Album due later on this year. He charted in 2013 when ‘Vandaag’ peaked at Number 15.

The 6th and final new song to chart this week is at Number 27 for Imagine Dragons with’ I Bet My Life’, the song is taken from their upcoming 2nd Album to be called ‘Smoke And Mirrors’. The song has been used in a commercial for ‘Jeep’ Automobiles.

After becoming the 1st song this decade to achieve 7 weeks at Number 1 Mark Ronson ft Bruno Mars with ‘Uptown Funk’ is finally outsold.

The new incumbent at Number 1 is Ellie Goulding with ‘Love Me like You Do’. This new single is featured on the soundtrack to the new film ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’, Goulding was born on 30th December 1986 and christened Elena Jane Goulding.  To date she has released 2 Albums, ‘Lights’ (2010) and ‘Halcyon’ (2012), in addition she has also released 14 singles as a solo artist. She now has had 12 top 40 singles and as a featured artist a further 3, ‘Love Me Like You Do’ gives her a 2nd Number 1 after ‘Burn topped’ the chart back in 2013.

Just the 3 new entries on the top 40 this week, the 2nd of them charting at Number 8 for Mike Magoo and Dragonette with ‘Outlines’. Mike Magoo is a Dutch Dj and music producer and Dragonette are a Canadian electronic group who formed back in 2005, they consist of singer songwriter Martina Sorbara, drummer Joel Stouffer and bassist and producer Dan Kurtz. In their native Canada their biggest success to date was back in 2012 with a track called ‘Let It Go’ which peaked at Number 23, up until this week’s new  top 10 single ‘Outlines ‘they were best known to UK audiences for being the featured artist on the Martin Solvieg hit ‘Hello’ (Number 13 in 2010.

The 3rd and final new entry this week is at Number 39 for Kodaline with ‘Honest’, Kodaline hail from Dublin and is an alternative Rock group. In their native Ireland they have already tasted much success with 2 of their songs going to Number 1, ‘Give Me A Minute’ back in 2007 and ‘High Hopes’ in 2013. High Hopes is also their most successful UK single to date peaking at Number 16, the current hit ‘Honest’ is the 3rd time they have now reached the top 40 as their song ‘Love Like This’ reached Number 22 in 2013.

Mark Ronson ft Bruno Mars with ‘Uptown Funk’ becomes the 1st song this decade to achieve 7 weeks at Number 1. Since the turn of the century only 4 other songs have achieved or surpassed this feat.  In 2005 Tony Christie ft Peter Kay with ‘Is This The Way To Amarillo’ (7 weeks ), Gnarls Barkley in 2006 with ‘Crazy’ (9 weeks), Rihanna ft Jay Z with ‘Umbrella’ (10 weeks) in 2007 and Leona Lewis with ‘Bleeding Love’ (7 weeks)in 2007.

The surprise package which is Hozier continues his slow climb to the top with ‘Take Me To Church’ climbing another place to Number 2. It is now in its 27th week on the top 40, Hozier whose real name is Andrew Hozier –Byrne was born on 17th march 1990 in Bray County Wicklow Ireland, the song is also currently Number 2 in America behind ‘Uptown Funk’.

There are 7 new entries  this week with the highest charting at Number 3 for Fergie with’ l.A.Love(La La)’.Fergie whose birth name was Stacey Ann Ferguson legally changed her name to Fergie Duhamel after marrying Josh Duhamel in 2009. Fergie is best known as the female member of The Black Eyed Peas the group she joined back in 2003, with the group she has achieved 16 top 40 singles. This is not the 1st time Fergie has tasted success as a solo artist, back in 2006 she released her debut Album ‘Dutchess’ which provided her with 3 top 10 singles the most successful being ‘Big Girls Don’t Cry’(Number 2-2007). Another notable achievement was singing as a featured artist on the David Guetta Number 1 from 2009 ‘Gettin Over You’.

The other new entry into the top 5 is at Number 5 for Kanye West ,Rihanna and Paul McCartney with ‘Four Five Seconds’, the song is the 1st single to be released from Rihannas as yet untitled 8t studio album to be released later on this year. West and McCartney are amongst the co writers of the song, McCartney doesn’t sing on the track but does play instruments. This is the 1st top 5 single for Paul McCartney since ‘We All Stand Together’ reached Number 3 in 1984.

In total there are 3 new songs inside this week’s top 10 and new in at Number 7 is Karen Harding with ‘Say Something’. Harding appeared in the 10th series of X-Factor but was eliminated at the boot camp stage, in 2014 she was approached by record producer MNEK and signed to Method records, this is her debut single.

New in at Number 13 is Hannah Wants and Chris Lorenzo with ‘Rhymes’, Wants and Lorenzo are both British producers who have teamed up for the track which features samples from both the Busta Rhymes song ‘Touch It’ and the Daft Punk song ‘Technologic’.

The new entry at Number 22 is for Maroon 5 with the 3rd single release from their 5th Album entitled ‘V’. The song is called ‘Sugar’ and is currently in the top 10 in America, this current track gives them their 16th UK top 40 single.

The new song to chart this week at Number 30 is from Selena Gomez with ‘The Heart Wants What It Wants’. It is a new song added to her greatest hits album from last year called ‘For You’, this is her 2nd top 40 UK hit following on from ‘Come And Get It’ (Number 8-2013).

The  final new entry this week is at Number 33 for The Weeknd with ‘Earned It’. The Weeknd was born Abel Tesfaye in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada on February 16th 1990. Tesfaye says he adopted his stage name after dropping out of school at the age of 17, he left one weekend and never came home. The spelling was modified to avoid copyright issues with a Canadian band already named The Weekend, this is his 1st charting single as main artist but he did chart as featured artist back in 2012 on the Drake song ‘Crew Love’ (Number 38),he is also featured artist on the current Number 11 single ‘Elastic Heart’ from Sia. ‘Earned It’ appears on the soundtrack of the film ‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ which also features tracks from Ellie Goulding, Beyonce, Frank Sinatra and The Rolling Stones amongst others.

For the last 3 weeks in a row there have been  only 2 new entries on the top 40 singles chart, but the lack of competition should not take away anything from the achievements of the Mark Ronson ft Bruno Mars song ‘Uptown Funk’. Its sales for the time of year suggest it would be hard to shift from the top spot no matter what the competition was, the track records a 5th non consecutive week as the most popular song in the UK. The last song to achieve 5 weeks at Number 1 was ‘Blurred Lines’ from Robin Thicke back on 20th July 2013. On 19th November 2011 Rihanna ft Calvin Harris with ‘We Found Love’ managed 6 weeks at the top, that song holds the record of the longest stay at Number 1 so far this decade. Looking back to the previous decade and from the beginning of this century the song ‘Umbrella’ from Rihanna ft Jay Z back in 2007 is the longest stayer at Number 1 with a total of 10 weeks from May 26th to August 4th.

Just the 2 new songs entered  the top 40 this week, the highest which is at Number 13 for Sia ft The Weeknd and Diplo with ‘Elastic Heart’. Sia Kate Isobelle Furler is from Adelaide Australia and this is her 3rd hit single as lead artist. Her breakthrough hit was back in 2000 with the Number 10 single ‘Taken For Granted’ but it was with ‘Chandelier’ last year that she is best known, the song peaked at Number 6 and is still in the current top 40 at Number 19 in its 29th week. ‘Elastic Heart’ is from her 6th and current Album released last year called ‘10000 Forms Of Fear’. Sia has also charted 5 times as a featured artist, most notably providing the vocals on the David Guetta 2011 Number 1 ‘Titanium’.

The other new entry is at Number 16 for Avicci with ‘The Nights’, this is his 10th hit as lead artist and the song features uncredited  vocals from Nicholas Furlong who also co-wrote the song. Furlong has worked as a writer and producer with artists such as 5 Seconds Of Summer  and The Wanted, but this is his 1st UK charting song.
