UK TOP 40 15TH FEBRUARY 2015 – WEEK 7.

We may be in the 7th week of the New Year but in music chart terms things are only just beginning to settle down into a normal routine. Throughout the month of January there were only 7 new songs entering  the top 40 as record labels were reluctant to release new material during that time, but with a further 16 new entries  so far in February we have so much more to listen to.

7 weeks in and only 2 different Number 1’s. Ellie Goulding deservedly holds onto the top spot for a 2nd week with the ‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ song ‘Love Me Like You Do’. This is her 2nd chart topper after ‘Burn’ gave her a 1st back in 2013, the aforementioned Album goes straight in at Number 1 on the compilation Album chart.

Hoziers remarkable chart run continues as he now achieves this week’s runner up spot with ‘Take Me To Church’ now in its 29th charting week, the song has also peaked at Number 2 (on Billboard) in America. Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars with ‘Uptown Funk’ has to settle for the Number 3 spot, the song is the current Billboard Number 1 and of course is the longest running chart topper this decade in the UK  at 7 weeks.

In total this week we have 6 new entries, the highest is at Number 4 for DJ Fresh ft  Ella Eyre with ‘Gravity’. DJ Fresh is the pseudonym of 37 year old Drum and Bass producer Daniel Stein, this is his 9th hit single and the 5th time he has reached the top 5, all of his singles are collaborations and this current hit features Ella Eyre whose birth name is Ella Mcmahon, she was raised in West London. She has had 2 hit singles as lead artist to date, Last year with’ If I Go’(Number 16) and ‘Comeback(Number 14),she is also no stranger to success as a featured artist as she was the vocalist on Rudimentals  2013 Number 1 ‘Waiting All Night’.

New in at Number 6 is the collaboration between singer Chris Brown and rapper Tyga with the track ‘Ayo’. This song is the 1st release from their forthcoming Album ‘Fan To Fan’ where all songs will be duets, ‘Fan To Fan’ will be Chris Browns 7th official Album release. Tyga an acronym ( thank you god always) is 25 year old Michael Stevenson from San Fernando Valley California and unlike many other  rappers  he says he had it easy growing up, he admits his mother drove a Range Rover. Tyga has released 3 Albums to date none of which have charted on the UK  top 40, as lead artist he charted with Young Money and Lloyd back in 2009 with ‘Bedrock’(Number 9),his best know solo track to date is ‘Rack City’(Number 39 )in 2011 but a Number 7 hit on Billboard. He is also known in the UK for providing the rap to Tulisa,s  2012 Number 11 single ‘Live It Up ‘and for being one of the rappers on the Chris Brown hit from last year, ‘Loyal’.

There is 1 more new entry in to the new top 10 this week and it is at Number 8 for Charli XCX ft Rita Ora with ‘Doing It’. The track is taken from Charli XCX  third studio Album ‘Sucker’ which was named best pop Album of 2014 by ‘Rolling Stone’ magazine and 6th best Album of the year overall. Despite such critical rave reviews the Album has only peaked at Number 28 on Billboard and has failed in all major markets around the world, to date it is still awaiting its official UK release. Singles wise in the UK this is the 3rd solo hit for Charli XCX as ‘Boom Clap’ peaked at Number 6 and ‘Break The Rules’ at Number 35, both last year  She also has 2 hits as featured artist, providing vocals on ‘I Love It’ with Icona Pop (Number 1 -2012) and ‘Fancy’ with Iggy Azalea(Number 5 -2014).Rita Ora has now featured as guest artist on 5 top 40 singles if you include the Band Aid track from last year.
