THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.

935-Steve ‘Silk’ Hurley-Jack Your Body

1987-Number 1 single.

Best Bit-At 6.20.The House that Jack built.Like many others, on first hearing this song, I knew I was listening to something brand new, a game changer.

‘Jack Your Body’ is a homage to a dance craze that was popular in the early 1980’s in Chicago, where the dancer ripples their torso back and forth in an undulating motion, known as ‘Jacking,; or ‘Jackin,’ or ‘The Jack.

At the back-end of the 1970’s ‘Disco’ music had all but run it’s course, and with Electronic instruments developing all of the time, even ‘Joe Bloggs’ could now experiment with making music in their own bedroom, using synthesizers and drum machines, such as the ‘Roland TR-808.’

Steve ‘Silk’ Hurley was an early pioneer of the genre that was to become known as ‘House Music,’ or in the case of this song, ‘Chicago House,’ as that was where he produced it.The idea for this track was developed by Hurley using the bass line (by speeding it up, and looping it) from a fairly obscure 1977 Disco song called ‘Let No Man Put Asunder’ by the all female group ‘First Choice’. The vocals were added by Hurley, who said his inspiration for the grunts, and some other sounds he produced were inspired by the actor ‘Mr T,’ and the comedian Richard Pryor.

The track was indeed a game changer, leading the way for many others to produce their own ‘House Music’ songs, and branching the genre off in many new directions, including the onset of ‘Acid House,’

‘Jack, Jack, ja, Jack, Jack your body.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.

936-Eminem featuring Dido-Stan.

2000-Number 1 single.

Best Bit-At 5.52.The name ‘Stan’ was included in the ‘Oxford English Dictionary’ in 2017, it is a slang term meaning, overzealous, maniacal, an overly obsessed fan of a celebrity, or personality. STalker + fAN = STAN.

Music producer Mark James, better known by his stage name,’The 45 King’, sent Eminem a remix he had done, of the first verse of a Dido song he had heard called ‘Thank You.’ Eminem was writing lyrics for a song about how some fans can become obsessed with their idols, and take things two far, and thought the two would match up nicely. The songs writing credits also include Paul Herman, the co-writer with Dido of ‘Thank You’.

The song tells the story of a fan obsessed with Eminem. The fan writes letters to Eminem, but he doesn’t get to see them The fan (Stan) thinks that Eminem is wilfully ignoring him, which makes him angry, and frustrated. With all the other mental issues going on in Stan’s head, he drives himself, and his pregnant girlfriend, who he has locked in the cars boot, over a bridge, killing them all. A while later Eminem having finally received his fan-mail, is setting about answering it, when he comes across Stan’s letter, and remembering the story of the bridge incident he had heard on the news, puts two and two together, and the reality hits him.

‘Come to think about, his name was, it was you.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.

937-Golden Earring-Radar Love.

1973-Number 7 single.

Best Bit-At 0.19.It’s almost worth getting a speeding ticket for.

Golden Earring are a Dutch Rock band formed in The Hague, Netherlands in 1961.They were until 1969 called ‘The Golden Earrings,’ taking their name from a song by the little known British group called ‘The Hunters’. Since 1970 the band have consisted of, Rinus Gerritsen, George Kooymans, Barry Hay, and Cesar Zuiderwijk, with other members coming and going. Between 1965-1969, Jaap Eggermont was the bands drummer, in 1981 he would gain international success for the ‘Stars on 45’ records.

The song tells the story of a driver who has a long journey ahead of him, he senses that his girlfriend needs him by her side, so he puts his foot down on the accelerator. In the days before mobile phones, there was no way of being able to communicate instantly, but he thinks he has a psychic relationship with her, which he calls ‘Radar Love’.He switches on the radio, and it is playing Brenda Lee’s 1966 song ‘Coming on Strong,’ Lee has said that she was flattered to be mentioned in such a great song.’

Don’t need a phone at all, we got a thing that’s called Radar Love, we got a wave in the air.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER

938-Natalie Umbruglia-Torn.

1997-Number 2 single.

Best Bit-At 3.27.If you are a Radio DJ in Australia, then you have probably played this many times, as it averages 75 spins a day.Which is 300,500 times (and counting,) since it’s release in 1997.

‘Torn’ was written in 1993 by Scott Cutler, Anne Preven, and Phil Thornaley, who were all members of the early 1990’s American Alternative Rock group ‘Ednaswap,’ who released their original version in 1995. The actual first recording of the song was in 1993 by Danish singer Lis Sorensen, as ‘Braendt,’ (Burned) after it was translated by Elizabeth Nielsen. Another early cover of the song worth noting was by the Norwegian singer Trine Rein in 1996, her version is very similar in style to Natalie Umbruglia’s recording, and pre dates it by a year. Natalie Umbuglia got to know about the song through working with one of ‘Torn’s’ songwriters, Phil Thornalley, while they worked together on her debut Album, ‘Left of the Middle.’ The Album went on to sell over seven million copies worldwide, making it the biggest selling debut ever by a female Rock/Pop artist.

‘Torn’ is the realisation that the man she fell in love with has changed, he once loved and cared for her, but now he is distant, and not interested in her anymore.

‘This is how I feel, I’m cold and I’m ashamed, lying naked on the floor.

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.

939-Easybeats-Friday on my Mind.

1966-Number 6 single.

Best Bit-At 0.34.The ‘Aussie’ ‘Sultans of Swing.’

The original five members of the Easybeats met at the Villawood Migrant Hostel in 1964, which is situated in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. All five founding members were from families that had emigrated to Australia from Europe. Lead singer Stevie Wright (1947-2015) was born in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, and is probably the most successful musician to have been born in that city. The drummer Gordon Fleet is also of English origin, while George Young (1946-2017) was Scottish. The other two members Dick Diamonde, and Harry Vanda originally came from The Netherlands.

After the break up of the Easybeats in 1969, Vanda, and Young would go on to form a formidable songwriting, and production team. Young was the older brother of Malcolm, and Angus Young of AC/DC (see also best songs 797-245 and 170,) and together with Vanda they produced many of that bands early Albums.Other high profile work included ‘Love is in the Air,'(see also best songs 447) for John Paul Young,(no relation,) and as also recording together as ‘Flash and the Pan.’ Mark Knopfler (see also best songs 829) paid tribute to the duo in his 1978 song ‘Sultans of Swing,’ with the lines, ‘You check out guitar George,’ and, ‘And Harry doesn’t mind if he doesn’t make the scene.’

‘Friday on my Mind’ tells the tale of someone stuck in a boring job from Monday to Friday, but come the weekend he is free to enjoy himself. David Bowie covered the song on his 1973 Album ‘Pin-Ups,’ and Gary Moore took his version to Number 26 in the UK chart in 1987.

‘Gonna have fun in the city, be with my girl she’s so pretty.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.

940-Morrissey-Suedehead.1988-Number 6 single.Best Bit-At 2.30.’Oh, it was a good lay, good lay, it was a good lay, good lay’, and this from a man who claims to be celibate.

‘Suedehead’ was Morrissey’s debut solo single, released only just a short while after the split of The Smiths, in early 1988. In the chart it out performed any of The Smiths singles, as ‘Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now,’ and ‘Shiela Take a Bow,’ had both only peaked at Number 10.

The song was co-written by Morrissey (see also best songs 673-222-167 and 72,) and Stephen Street, who wrote the music, and was also producer. Street had worked with Morrissey before on previous Smiths Albums. For this song, and it’s parent Album, Morrissey’s solo debut, ‘Viva Hate,’ they were joined by Vini Reilly, who played guitar and keyboards, and Andrew Paresi, who played drums, and percussion. The songs video is a tribute to Morrissey’s boyhood idol James Dean (1931-1955,) but the songs subject probably has little do do with him. The name ‘Suedehead’ is probably a red herring as well, it is the title of a book by British author Richard Allen, about post-skinhead gangs, Morrissey liked the word ‘Suedehead.

‘The songs lyrics are open to interpretation, one school of thought is that the narrator has had a fling with someone, he doesn’t want to continue the relationship, but they become obsessive, by going behind his back, and sneaking a look in his diary, which he finds sickening. At the end, all he can say was, that it was ‘A good lay,’ he wishes that the other person would leave it like that.

‘It was just to see, all the things you knew I’d written about you.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.

941-Lock ‘n’ Load-Blow Ya Mind.

2000-Number 6 single.

Best Bit-At 1.50.’Oh is this the way they say the future’s meant to feel? Or just 20.000 people standing in a field, and I don’t quite understand just what the feeling is, but that’s okay, cos we’er all sorted for E’s and Wizz.

‘Lock ‘n’ Load were a Dutch music production duo,who have worked with many other artists in the genre of Electronic Dance Music, and Hardcore House, and have charted twice in the UK, with this song, and it’s 2001 follow up, ‘House Some More,’ which reached Number 45.The lyrics on this track are sampled from a song called ‘Take Me Up,’ by M-Rock featuring Zemya Hamilton, which is a ‘House Music’ song from the 1990’s.

This track would be filed under ‘Hardcore House,’ which is a sub genre of Electronic Dance Music, that originated in the Netherlands in the 1990’s.It is distinguished by faster tempos, of at least 160 ‘BPM.’

‘Blow your mind with the rocking front, I’ll keep it all with my words so strong. Pure perfection from the beginning till the end, I’m here once again.

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.944-Ella Fitzgerald-Anything Goes.1956- Has never been released as a single in the UK.Best Bit-At 0.47.Perhaps if Cole Porter had lived to see ‘Punk Rock,’ and ‘Gangsta’ Rap’, he may have been more tolerant of his own era.’Anything Goes’ was written by Cole Porter (see also best songs 655-295 and 73) for the 1934 musical ‘Anything Goes,’ it was based on an original script collaborated on by Guy Bolton, and P.G.Woodhouse, but was heavily revised by the team of Howard Lindsay, and Russel Crouse. This version by Ella Fitzgerald (see also best songs 702-286-231 and 100) was the first of two studio recordings she made, and is taken from her ‘Cole Porter Song Book’ Album, recorded in 1956. The second version is from 1972, which was recorded with Nelson Riddle, that can be found on ‘Ella Loves Cole,’ and is a far more uptempo remake. The song has a fascinating lyric, warning that the people of today (1934,) are becoming morally out of control, and they should look for guidance from their predecessors.Porter probably meant by that the ‘Edwardian’ era, when ‘Showing a glimpse of stocking was something shocking.’ Porter was also not afraid to state his thoughts about well known people, and celebrities of the day, in the songs lyrics, but you will have to seek out some of the other many versions by various artists, in order to hear all the verses in full, as Ella Fitzgerald edits out the most controversial bits in her recordings.’The world has gone mad today, and good’s bad today, and black’s white today, and days night today.’PLEASE SHARE TO REACH A WIDER AUDIENCE.The countdown continues tomorrow at 1.0.pm.For a list of all the best 1000 songs click on the blog at www.barryphilipsdiscos.
