THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
945-Billy Idol-White Wedding.
1982-It didn’t chart when first issued, but when re-released in 1985, it reached Number 6.
Best Bit-At 2.26.Love is the drug.
Billy Idol was born William Michael Albert Broad, on November 30, 1955, in Stanmore, Middlesex, England, he took his stage name from a Geography teacher from his school days, who wrote on his report that Billy was idle.
Billy Idol’s initial success came when co-founding the Punk Rock group Generation X, they would have four top forty singles, the most successful being ‘King Rocker’ in 1979. In 1981 Idol moved to New York City to become a solo artist, where he teamed up with guitarist Steve Stevens, who plays on this track.
There are many theories as to what the songs meaning really is, some say it is about Idol’s sister whose wedding he attended, but Idol has said that the wedding only gave him inspiration for the song. My own interpretation is that the song is about Crack Cocaine.Crack is often referred to as Cocaine’s ‘Little Sister,’ since it is cheaper. The ‘White Wedding’ is when a Cocaine, or Crack addict quits, only to start again, ‘It’s a nice day to start again.’ The ‘Shotgun’ is referring to the practise where smoked drugs are exhaled by one user, into the mouth of another user.
‘There is nothing fair in this world, there is nothing safe in this world.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
946-Elton John-Crocodile Rock.
1972-Number 5 single.
Best Bit-At 1.57.Elton name checks the Bill Haley song ‘Rock Around the Clock,’ surely ‘See You Later Alligator’ is more appropriate.
As with the majority of their songs, the lyrics were written by Bernie Taupin, and the music by Elton John (see also best songs 481-237 and 62.) In America the song gave them their first Number 1 on Billboard, it would be a further four years until they topped the chart in the UK.
Elton and Bernie Taupin do not shy away from the fact that this song borrows heavily from the music of the late 1950’s, and early 1960’s, in fact it was recorded that way on purpose. If you listen to Del Shannon’s 1962 song ‘Cry Myself To Sleep,’ or The Diamonds 1957 hit ‘Little Darlin,” you will hear where the inspiration for the ‘La, La, La’ refrain comes from. In 1974 Buddy Kaye the composer of Speedy Gonzales’ filed a lawsuit against John and Taupin, a settlement was agreed out of court. If you listen closely to the intro of the song, it is practically identical to ‘Let’s Dance’ by Chris Montez, from 1962.
The song sees the narrator longing to return to the days of his youth, when he would dance with his girlfriend Suzie, to a dance routine they called the ‘Crocodile Rock.’ As time passed by Suzie left him for someone else, and music tastes changed. He now reminisces of those wonderful days.
‘Oh Lawdy mama, those Friday nights, when Suzie wore her dresses tight.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
947-Ocean Colour Scene-Hundred Mile High City.
1997-Number 4 single.
Best Bit-At 3.25.If electric guitars could report physical abuse, then this lot would be in big trouble with the guitar police.
Ocean Colour Scene were formed in Birmingham, England in 1989 by the coming together of two other bands called ‘The Boys,’ and ‘Fanatics.’ In the early days they found it difficult to make the breakthrough, but success finally arrived after touring as the opening act for Paul Weller, and then later for Oasis.
‘Hundred Mile High City’ is taken from the bands 3rd Album,’Marchin’ Already,’ when it knocked Oasis’ ‘Be Here Now’ off the top spot, Noel Gallagher sent ‘OCS’ his congratulations through a plaque, on which he had inscribed,’To the second best band in Britain.’ Steve Cradock of ‘OCS’ replied,’It’s an honour to be described as Britain’s second best band, ahead of Oasis, but behind the Beatles.’
Steve Cradock has explained the songs meaning, saying it is about a friend of his who was in deep depression, over a failed love affair. He said that his friend was mortified because he was oblivious to his own behaviour, which led to his breakdown. Hence the song is about desperation of lost love, and the need to escape the pain, possibly through thoughts of suicide.
‘I get a need, and I’m wanting to please it. I gotta face, and I’m wanting to feel it.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
948-Martha and the Vandellas-Dancing in the Street.
1964-Number 28 single. When reissued in 1969 it peaked at Number 4.
Best Bit-At 1.37.The song was written about the joys of partying outside, well I can vouch that after playing the song at many party’s, it is just as effective indoors.
‘Dancing in the Street’ was co-written by Marvin Gaye, William ‘Mickey’ Stevenson, and Ivy Jo Hunter. The idea for the song came from Stevenson, from watching people on the streets of Detroit cool off in the Summer water from opened fire hydrants, they appeared to be dancing in the water.
The song was surrounded by controversy, taking on a different meaning, when riots in the inner-city America led to many young black demonstrators citing the song as a ‘Civil Rights Anthem’ for social change.Martha Reeves strongly refutes any connection between the song and the Civil Rights Movement, and it is also well known that Tamla Motown founder Berry Gordy was extremely wary about affiliating his business with any organisation that might negatively influence his company’s commercial success.
There have been many cover versions of the song, with the most successful being the David Bowie, and Mick Jagger collaboration in order to raise money for the ‘Live Aid’ famine relief cause in 1985.The iconic music video was shown twice during the Live Aid event, helping to significantly boost charitable donations.
‘Can’t forget the Motor City.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
949-Gilbert O’Sullivan-Matrimony.
1972-It wasn’t released as a single in the UK until 1976, when it failed to chart.
Best Bit-At 2.06.Just before the first dance, when the Bride and Groom were cutting the cake, if I was feeling a little bit naughty I would play this ironic homage to marriage, no one ever commented.
Gilbert O’Sullivan (see also best songs 111) was born Raymond Edward O’Sullivan, on 1 December, 1946, in Waterford, Ireland, although he is Irish, music critics have described his quintessentially English song writing as the missing link between The Kinks, Squeeze, and Blur.
It is said that O’Sullivan dislikes touring, much preferring to stay home writing songs everyday, between 9.0.am-5.0.pm. He said he avoided dating during the peak of his career, fearing it would inhibit his songwriting abilities.
‘Matrimony’ is track five on side one of Gilbert O’Sullivan’s debut Album ‘Himself’ from 1972. It tells the tale of a couple getting married on the cheap, and not telling anyone, as they think that their families wouldn’t approve of the marriage anyway. The narrator wants to go ahead with the wedding, but knows that like many other marriages, it may not work out.
‘Marriage, the joining together of two people, for better or for worse, till death them do part.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
950-Wildchild-Renegade Mater.
1995-Number 11 single.
Best Bit-At 0.32.The Fatboy Slim Remix is equally as good, but I have chosen the Wildchild version, because he had the original idea.
‘Wildchild’ was the stage name of Roger McKenzie (22 July, 1971- 25 November, 1995,) he was born in Southampton, England, and died from an undiagnosed heart condition at the age of 24. His first chart success was with ‘Legends of the Dark Black Side Part 2,’ which in fact is this song, but under a different title, which reached Number 34 in April, 1995. When re-released shortly before his death in October 1995, under the title of ‘Renegade Master,’ it peaked at Number 11. McKenzie has also had two posthumous hits, with ‘Jump to My Beat,’ (Number 30, 1996,) and ‘Bad Boy,’ (Number 38, 1998.)
In January 1998 Fatboy Slim (see also best songs 760-387 and 95,) did a remix of ‘Renegade Master,’ it surpassed the success of the Wildchild version by reaching Number 3 in the UK top 40 singles chart.
‘Renegade Master’ samples some of the lyrics from the Hip-Hop song ‘One For The Trouble’ by ‘A.D.O.R’.,and due to the songs popularity some of the lyrics have made their way into the ‘Urban Dictionary.’ A ‘renegade’ is someone who rebels, and becomes an outlaw defector, or is a disloyal person who abandons their duty.’Ill Behaviour,’ is urban slang for acting in an unusual manner, maybe brought on by the use of alcohol, or drugs, and a ‘Default Damager’ is someone who has a lot to say, but offers little content in what they say.
‘Back once again for the renegade master, D4 damager. power to the people. Back once again for the renegade master, D4 damager, with the ill behaviour.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
951-The Cure-In Between Days.
1985-Number 15 single.
Best Bit-At 0.01.It’s only the song with the best ‘Intro’ in the world ever, all 1 minute and 51 seconds of it.
The original five founding members of The Cure were school friends at Notre Dame Middle School in Crawley, West Sussex, England, their first performance was at the school in April 1973, calling themselves ‘Obelisk.’ It wasn’t until the Spring of 1978 that the band now officially named The Cure by Robert Smith, entered a recording studio for the first time as a trio. They have undergone many personnel changes throughout the years, with Robert Smith being the bands one constant.
‘In Between Days’ is an upbeat, happy sounding ‘Pop’ song, something not always associated with The Cure, (although there have been a few,) it has been noted that the tracks baseline is reminiscent of the song ‘Dreams Never End’ by New Order. Unlike the beat, the lyrics are not happy, the song was written by Robert Smith, and tell of an affair the narrator had, then realising he had made a mistake, is wanting his first love back.
‘And I know I was wrong, when I said it was true, That it couldn’t be me, and be her, in-between, without you.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
952-Dennis Brown-Money In My Pocket.
1979-Number 14 single.
Best Bit- At 3.59. I am the very proud owner of this song on beautiful mint condition 12 inch vinyl. It probably isn’t worth anything, and besides I don’t even own a record player to play it on, but it’s lovely to look at.
Dennis Brown was born on February 1st, 1957, in Kingston, Jamaica, he died on the 1st July, 1999, also in Kingston, Jamaica. He was a prolific recording artist, releasing his first single at the age of 11, and recording more than 75 Albums in his lifetime. He was one of the leading protagonists in the genre of ‘Lovers Rock,’ a style of Reggae music noted for it’s romantic sound, and content. He is remembered as one of the most influential figures in Reggae music, Bob Marley cited Brown as his favourite singer, calling him ‘The Crown Prince of Reggae.’
‘Money in my Pocket’ was originally recorded in 1972, and was co-written by Brown, and the legendary Reggae producer Joe Gibbs (1942-2008.) In 1978 the specialist Reggae label ‘Lightning Records’ released a new version of the song, with the original ‘Dub’ version being replaced by the ‘Toasting’ of Prince Mohammed.
‘You see what love can do,after making me feel blue, ain’t that a shame, yeah.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
953-Avril Lavigne-Girlfriend.
2007-Number 2 single.
Best Bit-At 1.11.It’s the poor Boyfriend I feel sorry for, it must be awful having all those girls fighting over you.
‘Girlfriend’ was the biggest selling single worldwide in 2007, with estimated sales in excess of 7,300,000 copies. The song was co-written by Avril Lavigne, and Dr. Luke, who were both sued by James Gangwer, and Tommy Dunbar, of the band ‘The Rubinoos,’ over claims that ‘Girlfriend’ was very similar to their 1979 song ‘I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend.’ Both Lavigne, and Dr Luke both strenuously denied these accusations, stating that they had never ever even heard of that song. Eventually things were settled out of court, with Lavigne stating it was cheaper to do it that way, rather than having to spend more on court costs. It has also been pointed out that The Rubinoos song has similarities to the Rolling Stones ‘Get Off Of My Cloud,’ and ‘Girlfriend’ closely resembles the song ‘Micky’ by Toni Basil.
Avril Ramona Lavigne was born on September 27, 1984, in Belleville, Ontario, Canada, she is recognised for bringing together elements of ‘Power Pop’ and ‘Rock,’ earning her the title of ‘Pop Punk Queen.’ Her debut Album, ‘Let Go’ released in 2002 went to Number 1 in the UK, making her the youngest solo female artist at that time, at the age of 17 to top that chart.
‘She’s like,’So whatever’,you could do so much better, I think we should get together now.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
954-Elvis Presley-Jailhouse Rock.
1958-Number 1 single. When re released in 2005, it once again went to Number 1.
Best Bit-At 0.01.When an old person tells you that today’s songs would make a vicar blush, ask them how this song of debauchery, and Sodom and Gomorrah, managed to get past the censors in 1957.
‘Jailhouse Rock’ was written for the film of the same name by the legendary songwriting team of Jerry Leiber (1933-2011,) and Mike Stoller. The film was the third of 31 films Elvis Presley (see also best songs 664-442 and 194) appeared in, and one of his more critically approved of. The dance scene in the film to this song, which Presley performed in, and also choreographed, is agreed upon as his greatest on screen moment.
Leiber and Stoller (see also best songs 804-124 and 86) obviously had a lot of fun writing the lyrics, which are very much tongue in cheek. Some of the characters are fictional, but some were real, ‘Shifty Henry’ was an American Blues songwriter, while ‘The Purple Gang’ who were ‘The whole rhythm section,’ were in fact a criminal mob of murderers, and armed robbers, who operated in Detroit, Michigan in the 1920’s. ‘Sad Sack’ is another character mentioned, Sad Sack was originally a comic book character created during World War 2, for the comic book ‘Yank, the Army Weekly.’ Sad Sack depicted a lowly private, experiencing some of the humiliations of military life, the title was a euphemistic shortening of the military slang,’Sad Sack of S..t.’
‘Number 47 said to Number 3, you’re the cutest jailbird I ever did see.’
