THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
985-Average White Band-Pick Up the Pieces.
1974-Number 6 single.
Best Bit-At 2.13. When is an instrumental not an instrumental? Because this song has a few chants of ‘Pick Up the Pieces,’ does that mean it’s not actually an instrumental?
If you didn’t know you would think that the Average White Band, also known as ‘AWB’ are a American Funk Band, nothing could be further from the truth, because they are white, and from Scotland. ‘AWB’ were formed in 1972 by Alan Gorrie, and Malcolm ‘Molly’ Duncan, they were soon joined by a further five members. They have had four UK top 40 singles all charting between 1974-1980, in total they have released 13 studio Albums, the latest being ‘Inside Out’ in 2018.
‘Pick Up the Pieces’ was co-written by band members Hamish Stuart, and Roger Ball, though all of the groups members are given songwriting credit, it was produced by the legendary music producer Arif Mardin (1932-2006.) During the song there are chants of ‘Pick Up the Pieces,’ Malcolm Duncan explained,’ It’s about picking yourself up when things aren’t going well’. The song had it’s greatest success in America, where it became a Billboard Number 1 single in 1975.

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
986-The Human League-Sound of the Crowd.
1981-Number 12 single.
Best Bit-At 2.52.There are certain songs which don’t have an official dance, or actions relating to that song, but because you’ve seen the video, you find yourself subconsciously copying the girls in The Human League.
The Human League were formed in Sheffield, England in 1977 by Phil Oakey, Martin Ware, and Ian Craig Marsh, as an experimental electronic outfit. Ware, and Marsh both left to form Heaven 17 in 1980, leaving Oakey to pursue a more commercial sound. In 1981 Ian Burden joined the band full time, alongside the female vocalists Joanne Catherall, and Susan Sully, who had joined in 1980, and Philip Wright, who had been part of the group since 1978 (see also best songs 1009.)
‘The Sound of the Crowd’ was co-written by Oakey, and Burden. Some of the lyrics appear to make no sense, such as,’Stroke a pocket with a print of a laughing sound.’ Burden has explained,’I scribbled down some stream-of-consciousness words, so that I could demonstrate the vocal parts to him (Oakey,) without having to do the naff la-la-la-hum-hum-hum type of explanation. He went off and wrote a new chorus vocal, but surprisingly kept my verse lyrics.’
‘Make a shroud, pulling combs through a backwash frame.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
987-Fedde Le Grand-Put Your Hands Up for Detroit.
2006 Number 1 single.
Best Bit-At 2.02.Detroit will always be synonymous with the music of Tamla Motown, but this song pays homage to the genre of ‘Detroit Techno,’ music which developed in Detroit, in the early 1980’s.
‘Put Your Hands Up for Detroit’ samples the lyrics of the 1999 Electronic Dance Music song ‘Hands Up for Detroit’ by Matthew Dear, and David Shayman (1980-2007.) In 2006 Dutch music producer Fedde Le Grand recorded his interpretation, taking the song to Number 1 in five European countries, and the top 20 in a further six. In the UK Fedde Le Grand had further success with ‘The Creeps,’ reaching Number seven, and ‘Let Me Think About It,’ peaking at Number two, both in 2007.
The songs lyrics are often misheard with most hearing,’I love this city,’ Fedde Le Grand has confirmed that the actual lyrics are,’ Put your hands up for Detroit, our lovely city.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
988-Nat King Cole-Walkin’ My Baby Back Home.
1952-Has never charted in the UK.
Best Bit-At 1.27.It’s the perfect tale of gentlemanly romance, until the fifth verse when things get confusing, and possibly even a little creepy.
‘Walkin’ My Baby Back Home’ was written in 1930 by Roy Turk (lyrics,) (1892-1934,) and Fred E. Ahlert (music,) (1892-1953.) Turk’s most famous lyric is ‘Are You Lonesome Tonight,’ a song he wrote in 1927, becoming a hit for Elvis Presley in 1960. ‘Walkin My Baby Back Home’ first charted on Billboard in 1931, when four different versions all made the top 20.In the UK the most successful version is the 1952 recording by Johnny Ray which peaked at Number 12, while at the same time in America, Nat King Cole made Number 8 on Billboard (see also best songs 327-226 and 161.)

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
989-Underworld-Born Slippy. NUXX.
1996-Number 2 single.
Best Bit-At 4.44.If your planning to dance all the way through, make sure you pace yourself, because it’s only just getting started.
Underworld were formed in Cardiff, Wales, in 1980 by Karl Hyde, and Rick Smith, playing ‘Synth Pop,’ which was very popular at that time. It wasn’t until 1993 when they were joined by Darren Emerson, that their musical style drastically changed, into ‘Progressive House,’ and ‘Techno’ music, this new lineup would become known as ‘Underworld Mk2.’
Underworld have recorded two completely different songs called Born Slippy, this song Born Slippy. NUXX, first appeared as the ‘B’ side of Born Slippy which peaked at Number 52 on the UK chart in 1995. It wasn’t until Born Slippy. NUXX was chosen for the film ‘Trainspotting,’ that the song took off, reaching Number 2 in the UK during the Summer of ‘Euro 96,’ the football tournament played in England, incidentally Born Slippy was the name of a Greyhound that the band had won some money on, so both these songs are named in it’s honour.
The songs lyrics were written by Karl Hyde during his time as a alcoholic, he said,’We used to go out drinking in Soho, all the lyrics were written on that night. A drunk sees the world in fragments, and I wanted to recreate that. The first time we played it live, people raised their lager cans, and I was horrified, because I was still deep into alcoholism. It was never meant to be a drinking anthem, it was a cry for help.’
‘Drive boy, dirty numb angel boy,In the doorway boy.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
990-Lee Marvin-Wand’rin’ Star.
1970-Number 1 single.
Best Bit-At 1.14. Each to their own, you couldn’t imagine Lee Marvin singing something like ‘Big Girls Don’t Cry,’ but at the same time, you couldn’t imagine Franki Valli singing this.
‘Wand’rin’ Star’ was one of the songs written by Alan J. Lemer (1918-1986,)(lyrics,) and, Frederick Loewe (1901-1988,) (music,) for the 1951 stage musical ‘Paint Your Wagon.’ In 1969 the musical was made in to a film starring Lee Marvin, Clint Eastwood, and Jean Seberg, although Marvin (1924-1987) was not a natural singer he sang all his own songs in the film, rejecting the idea of miming over another singers voice. The song was orchestrated and arranged by the legendary band leader Nelson Riddle (1921-1985,) who had worked with many world class vocalists of the 1950’s, and 60’s, including Frank Sinatra, and Ella Fitzgerald.
Lee Marvin is one of the few true ‘One Hit Wonders,’ which in it’s true definition means having a Number 1 song, and then never charting in the top 40 again.
‘Snow can burn your eyes, but only people make you cry.’

‘Club Tropicana’ is one of only a few songs in the Wham! catalogue that gives Andrew Ridgeley a co-writing credit, as it was written as far back as 1981, before the band was legally established (see also best songs 342 and 142.) In the early days of their musical collaboration George Michael, and Andrew Ridgeley co-wrote home demos, and this song was the second one they composed, the first being ‘Wham Rap!’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
992-Pink Floyd-See Emily Play.
1967-Number 6 single.
Best Bit-At 2.02.I am a great believer that there is a fine line between genius, and insanity.
Pink Floyd (see also best songs 280) were formed in London, England, in 1965 by Syd Barrett, Nick Mason, Roger Waters, and Richard Wright (1943-2008,) David Gilmour joined the band in 1967. Their critically acclaimed Albums include ‘The Dark Side of the Moon,’ ‘Wish You Were Here,’ and The Wall,’
They started out life as a Psychedelic Rock band driven by Syd Barrett (1946-2006.) Their debut Album, ‘Piper at the Gates of Dawn,’ was mainly written by Barrett, as were portions of the follow up, ‘A Saucerful of Secrets.’
Syd Barrett was born Roger Keith Barrett in Cambridge,England, the name ‘Syd’ was a nickname he had received during his school days. In 1968 he was sacked by the other band members for his use of LSD, and other drugs.
‘See Emily Play’ is a song about a girl named Emily, who Barrett claimed to have seen while sleeping in the woods, after taking a psychedelic drug. The Emily in question is probably Emily Young a very famous sculptor, who as a teenager would attend venues where Pink Floyd were playing.
‘Emily tries, but misunderstands, she’s often inclined to borrow somebody’s dreams, till tomorrow.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
993-R.Kelly-Ignition (Remix.)
2003-Number 1 single.
Best Bit-At 2.37.Lock your daughters up…..No seriously, lock them up.
The song is taken from R. Kelly’s sixth studio Album ‘Chocolate Factory,’ released in 2003. What makes this song unusual is that it is a remix of the song ‘Ignition,’ which is track nine on the Album, and goes straight in to track ten ‘Ignition (Remix.’) The majority of remixes are interpretations by other artists, here R. Kelly interprets his own song.
Controversy, and rumours of sexual misdemeanours have courted R.Kelly (see also best songs 800,) for many years. On July 11th, 2019 Kelly was arrested on federal charges alleging sex crimes, and obstruction of justice. Kelly faces a total of 18 federal counts, including child pornography, kidnapping and forced labour. As a result he is currently incarcerated at Metropolitan Correctional Centre in Chicago.
‘Now usually I don’t do this but, uh, go head on and break ’em off, with a lil’ previews of the remix.’
