THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.

939-Easybeats-Friday on my Mind.

1966-Number 6 single.

Best Bit-At 0.34.The ‘Aussie’ ‘Sultans of Swing.’

The original five members of the Easybeats met at the Villawood Migrant Hostel in 1964, which is situated in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. All five founding members were from families that had emigrated to Australia from Europe. Lead singer Stevie Wright (1947-2015) was born in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, and is probably the most successful musician to have been born in that city. The drummer Gordon Fleet is also of English origin, while George Young (1946-2017) was Scottish. The other two members Dick Diamonde, and Harry Vanda originally came from The Netherlands.

After the break up of the Easybeats in 1969, Vanda, and Young would go on to form a formidable songwriting, and production team. Young was the older brother of Malcolm, and Angus Young of AC/DC (see also best songs 797-245 and 170,) and together with Vanda they produced many of that bands early Albums.Other high profile work included ‘Love is in the Air,'(see also best songs 447) for John Paul Young,(no relation,) and as also recording together as ‘Flash and the Pan.’ Mark Knopfler (see also best songs 829) paid tribute to the duo in his 1978 song ‘Sultans of Swing,’ with the lines, ‘You check out guitar George,’ and, ‘And Harry doesn’t mind if he doesn’t make the scene.’

‘Friday on my Mind’ tells the tale of someone stuck in a boring job from Monday to Friday, but come the weekend he is free to enjoy himself. David Bowie covered the song on his 1973 Album ‘Pin-Ups,’ and Gary Moore took his version to Number 26 in the UK chart in 1987.

‘Gonna have fun in the city, be with my girl she’s so pretty.’
