THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
178-Edith Piaf-Non,Je Ne Regrette Rien.’
1960-Has Never charted in the UK.
Best Bit-At 1.47.’Formidable.’
‘Non,Je Ne Regrette Rien’ means,no I regret nothing, was composed in 1956 by Charles Dumont with lyrics by Michel Vaucaire.
When Dumont and Vaucaire visited Piaf’s home on 24th October 1960 she received them in a very impolite and unfriendly manner. She was furious that her housekeeper Danielle had arranged a meeting with the two men without informing her,so she left them waiting an hour in her living room before she appeared.’As you can see I am extremely tired’ she said to them, very irritated,’Hurry up only one song! Quick to the piano,go ahead,’she commanded.Nervous and perspiring,Dumont sang the song in a low voice. When he finished there was a big silence,as they waited for Piaf’s verdict.’Will you sing it again?’asked Piaf in a sharp voice. When he was hardly halfway through, she interrupted him,’Formidable, this is the song I have been waiting for,it will be my biggest success.’
Edith Piaf was born Edith Gassion in Paris,19th,December 1915 and died 10th,October 1963 in Grasse,France of liver cancer.Since her death several biographies and films have studied her life, she has become one of the most celebrated performers of the 20th Century.

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
180-Beach Boys-Good Vibrations.
1966-Number 1 single.
Best Bit-At 2.54.Mike Love has said that he didn’t actually know if there was such a word in the dictionary as ‘exitations,’ but there is.
‘Good Vibrations’ was composed by Brian Wilson,(see also best songs 930 and 811) with lyrics by Mike Love,it is considered to be one of the most important songs in the development of Rock Music. At the time of recording it was the costliest single ever made, having separate segments of the song being recorded in several different studios with many session musicians being used between February and September 1966.
It heralded the start of pop experimentation and the onset of progressive and psychedelic rock and helped develop the use of the recording studio as an instrument.
Music critics have cited the song as an inspiration for such songs as The Beatles,’A Day in the Life’ and Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
183-Diana Ross & Marvin Gaye-You Are Everything.
1974-Number 5 single.
Best Bit-At 1.05.These days duets in Pop Music are commonplace, but back in 1973 it was still quite rare. The thinking being,if two fan-bases are brought together then they will sell twice as many records.
Marvin Gaye(see also best songs 723) had made himself a promise that he would never again record a duet with a female artist because he felt they were cursed by him recording with them.Mary Wells career never recovered after she left Motown,Kim Weston had also left the label abruptly and Tammi Terrell had developed a brain tumor, which later resulted in her death. Gaye changed his mind when it was pointed out to him that it would increase his popularity,he even allowed Diana Ross'(see also best songs 969-823-650-553-414 and 212) name in front of his on the billing, something that never happened with his three previous partners.
‘You Are Everything’ was written in 1971 by Thom Bell and Linda Creed(see also best songs 765) for The Stylistics self titled debut Album,it reached Number 9 on Billboard but failed to chart in the UK
‘As he turned the corner I called out your name,I felt so ashamed when it wasn’t you.’

184-The Trammps-Disco Inferno.
1977-Number 16 single.
Best Bit-At 2.18.There are some people who love ‘Disco Music’ so much that they say that at their funeral they want this song playing when they are cremated.
The Trammps were active from 1972-1992,having been formed in Philadelphia,Pennsylvania,United States.During the lifetime of the group there have been 22 different members, some of whom were also members of the band ‘MFSB’ and played on and produced hits for the legendary ‘Philadelphia Records’ label.
‘Disco Inferno’ was also the title track of The Trammps fourth studio Album released in 1976,it was written by Leroy Green and Ron ‘Have Mercy’ Kersey(1949-2005.)The song was initially a success in the clubs but failed to capture the imagination of the wider public until it was chosen for the ‘Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack'(see also best songs 211,)’the second biggest selling soundtrack Album of all time.

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
185-Ray Charles-Georgia On My Mind.
1960-Number 24 single.
Best Bit-At 2.46.For whom was this song written, was it about a girl,or about a state?
‘Georgia On My Mind’ was written in 1930,the lyrics were composed by Stuart Gorrell(1901-1963) and the music by Hoagy Carmichael(1899-1981.) Gorrell was asked by his mother after reading the lyrics several times,’What is Georgia.a girl or a state,’to which Gorrell answered,’What do you think?’ In Hoagy Carmichael’s(see also best songs 288) autobiography he wrote that saxophonist Frankie Trumbauer told him he should write a song about the state of Georgia,to which Carmichael jokingly volunteered the first two words,’Georgia,Georgia.’It is also worth noting that Carmichael had a sister called Georgia.
In 1960 Ray Charles(see also best songs 475) a native of Georgia recorded what was to become the most famous version of the song, taking it to Number 1 on Billboard. In 1979 Charles performed the song in the aftermath of years of activism and national legislation resulting from the Civil Rights Movement,he performed the song before the Georgia General Assembly. After this performance the Assembly adopted it as the state song of Georgia on April 24,1979.
‘I said just an old sweet song keeps Georgia on my mind.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
186-David Bowie-Rock ‘N’ Roll Suicide.
1972-The song wasn’t released as as single until 1974 reaching Number 22.
Best Bit-At 2.13.The rear cover of the original vinyl LP contained the instruction,’TO BE PLAYED AT MAXIMUM VOLUME,’the instruction was omitted from all future re-releases.
Some music critics have cited the opening 2 tracks from this songs parent Album,’Ziggy Stardust'(‘Five Years’ and ‘Soul Love’) to be the greatest opening of any LP ever,I would like to put forward this song for contender as the best Album closer ever.
David Bowie(see also best songs 807-440-334-302 and 209) retired the character Ziggy Stardust at the final Ziggy Stardust concert at the Hammersmith Odeon,London on July 3,1973.Before singing ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll Suicide’ Bowie announced,’It’s the last show we’ll ever do.’The audience thought Bowie was retiring, but it was actually Ziggy he was killing off.
The very last time Bowie played ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll Suicide’ live was on his 1990 ‘Sound + Vision Tour.’
‘Oh no love you’re not alone, your watching yourself but you’re too unfair.’
