Gilbert Scott-Heron(April 1,1949-May 27,2011) was a poet,author and musician,primarily known for his spoken word performances in the 1970’s and 1980’s.His father Gil Heron,nicknamed ‘The Black Arrow’ was a Jamaican soccer player in the 1950’s who became the first black player to play for Celtic Football Club in Glasgow.
Heron met Brian Jackson in the early 1970’s when they were both at Lincoln University,Pennsylvania and for the next decade they would record together with Jackson composing most of the music.
Heron has had a great influence on the genres of ‘Rap’ and ‘Hip-Hop,’he is fondly remembered as the ‘Godfather of Rap,’ and many of his songs have been sampled in ‘Hip-Hop.’
In a 2010 interview Heron said,’I don’t know if I can take the blame for Rap Music.’Heron preferred to call himself a ‘Bluesologist,’his own term for ‘a scientist who is concerned with the origins of the Blues.’
