THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
196-Leonard Cohen-Suzanne.
1967-Has never charted in the UK.
Best Bit At-1.00.In 1967 Cohen had become disillusioned with his lack of financial success as a writer,so he decided to go to America to pursue a career as a Folk music singer/songwriter and for that we all say ‘Hallelujah.’
Leonard Cohen was born September 21,1934 in Montreal,Quebec,Canada,he died November 7,2016 at the age of 82.
‘Suzanne’ started out life as a poem Cohen wrote in 1966,it first gained recognition when recorded by Judy Collins in the same year.Cohen recorded his version of the song for his debut Album ‘Songs Of Leonard Cohen’ released in 1967,it was also his debut single.
The songs lyrics were inspired by Cohen’s platonic relationship with a dancer called Suzanne Verdal. Cohen reminisces of the times they spent together by the harbour in Montreal and the walks they would take around Old Montreal past the church of Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours where sailors were blessed before heading out to sea.
‘And you want to travel with her and you want to travel blind.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
197-Glen Campbell-Rhinestone Cowboy.
1975-Number 4 single.
Best Bit-At 0.53.Artists who made the wearing of Rhinestones on their stage attire famous include Elvis Presley,Liberace and Neil Diamond, although of course Diamond was much more comfortable in blue jeans.
Glen Campbell(see also best songs 846) first heard this song on the radio while touring Australia,he identified with the songs subject matter, decided to learn it and on his return to the United States approached his record label,’Capital’ and told them of ‘a great new song.’
The song he had heard on the radio was written and performed by singer/songwriter Larry Weiss whose version had made little commercial impact. The song is about a Country singer struggling to make it big and it reflected Weiss striving to make it in his songwriting career.
For Campbell this was a very important song,it came at a time when the hits had dried up,he hadn’t been in the higher reaches of the charts since 1972.The story of the faded star who perseveres in the song held a lot of meaning for him.
‘There’ll be a load of compromisin’ on the road to my horizon, but I’m gonna be where the lights are shinin’ on me.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
198-Eagles-Hotel California.
1977-Number 8 single.
Best Bit-At 4.19.A Five Star Hotel.
The Eagles(see also best songs 505) were formed in 1971 in Los Angeles by Glen Frey,Don Henley,Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner,Frey died in 2016 at the age of 67.Two of their Albums,’Their Greatest Hits'(1971-1975′) and ‘Hotel California’ became two of the three biggest selling Albums in the United States by 2006.
Hotel California has become the Eagles signature song, the guitar solo was voted by the readers of the British music magazine ‘Guitarist’ to be the greatest of all time in 1998 and like many a good lyric the songs subject is open to interpretation. The most likely scenario is that the song is about materialism and excess.California is used as the setting but it could relate to anywhere in America.Don Henley has said,’It’s a song about the dark underbelly of the American Dream,it’s a song about a journey from innocence to experience.’
‘You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
200-Simon & Garfunkle-The Boxer.
1968-Number 6 single.
Best Bit-At 2.53.On June 3rd,2016 at his concert in Berkeley,California,Paul Simon stopped singing partway through ‘The Boxer’ to announce in one sentence the breaking news.’I’m sorry to tell you this in this way,but Muhammed Ali passed away.’ He then finished the song with the last verse.
‘The Boxer’ was written by Paul Simon(see also best songs 529) and was released on Simon & Garfunkle’s fifth and final studio Album.’Bridge Over Troubled Water.’
The lyrics are mainly autobiographical and were written during a time when the duo felt their work was being unfairly criticised. The lyrics discuss poverty and loneliness in New York City, while the final verse is an observation of a boxer who despite the effects of ‘every glove that laid him down or cut him till he cried out,I am leaving,I am leaving-”but”,the lyrics continue, the fighter still remains.’
Paul Simon has said,’I think I was reading the Bible around that time. That’s where I think phrases such as ‘workman’s wages’ and ‘seeking out the poorer quarters’ came from. That was biblical,I think the song was about me,everybody’s beating me up and I’m telling you now I’m going to go away if you don’t stop.’
‘In the clearing stands a boxer and a fighter by his trade.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
201-Rambler Trio featuring Arthur Smith-Guitar Boogie.
1945-Has never charted. There was no UK chart until 1952.
Best Bit-At 1.22.’I guess you guys aren’t ready for that, but your kids are gonna love it.’
Many songs (and some feature in this countdown) hold claims to being the very first ever Rock ‘N’ Roll song and this one has very strong claims. The songs writer Arthur Smith was born in 1921 in Clinton,South Carolina,he died in 2014.Smith created this ‘new sound’ from ‘Boogie-Woogie,’ a style of music that developed in African-American communities in the 1870’s,but became very popular in the 1920’s.Boogie Woogie was always played on the piano but Smith’s use of a guitar as lead instrument led to a new genre of music that would become known as ‘Hillbilly Boogie.’
In 1959 Bert Weedon(1920-2012) recorded his version of the song and renamed it ‘Guitar Boogie Shuffle,’he became the first British guitarist to have a UK top ten single. In 1957 Weedon had written a book about learning to play the guitar, the book was called ‘Play A Day,’it went on to become a major influence on many leading British musicians including John Lennon,Paul; McCartney,Brian May,Eric Clapton,Pete Townshend and many, many more.

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
202-The 5th Dimension-Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In.
1969-Number 13 single.
Best Bit-At 0.36.Astrologers have denounced the lyrics as ‘astrological gibberish’ noting that Jupiter forms an astrological aspect with Mars several times a year and the Moon is in the 7th house for two hours every day.I say the lyrics should be treated as poetic licence.
‘Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In’ is a medley of two songs originally featured in the 1967 musical ‘Hair.’ with lyrics by James Rado and Gerome Ragni and music by Galt MacDermot.
It was the songs producer Dayton ‘Bones’ Howe who had the ideas for a medley as the two songs on their own were too short for release as a 7inch single. The music on the song is played by the session musicians collectively known as ‘The Wrecking Crew'(see also best songs 978-846-811-744-672-660-527-486-262) with Hal Blaine who died on March 11,2019 on drums.
The 5th Dimension were formed in 1966 in Los Angeles,California, two of the original line up of the five,Billy Davis Jr. and his wife Marilyn McCoo went on to score a Billboard Number 1 in 1976,(see best songs 572.)
‘Let the sunshine, let the sunshine in,oh let it shine c’mon.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
203-Cat Stevens-Morning Has Broken.
1972-Number 9 single.
Best Bit-At 1.39.Here is a piece of silly musical trivia,Rick Wakeman played the piano on David Bowie’s Life On Mars and he also played the piano on this song about life on earth.
‘Morning Has Broken’ was originally written as a hymn in 1931 by English author Eleanor Farjeon(1881-1965,) the song was inspired by the village of Alfriston in East Sussex,England.Originally the words were set to a traditional Scottish Gaelic tune which was called ‘Bunessan,’
When searching for new material Cat Stevens(see also best songs 384) came across the hymn,he recorded it but it only lasted for 45 seconds. In order to fill it out he brought in classically trained keyboardist Rick Wakeman who composed and performed the piano arrangement.
The song is often sung in children’s school assembly’s and also played at funeral services.
‘Morning has broken like the first morning, blackbird has spoken like the first bird.’

1976-Number 21 single.
Best Bit-At 0.11. ‘And we were trying different things and we were smoking funny things, making love out by the lake to our favourite song.’
Lynyrd Skynyrd is an American Rock band formed in Jacksonville,Florida in 1964,tragedy struck when founding member Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines and backing singer Cassie Gaines were killed in an air-plane crash on October 20,1977,the band reformed in 1987.
