THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
995-Harry Chapin-Cat’s in the Cradle.
1974-Has never charted in the UK.
Best Bit-At 3.09. You have to be 18 to vote, 18 to drink alcohol, 17 to drive, but only 16 to have sex. If prospective parents had to have compulsory lessons on how to bring up children, then there would be less need for a song like this.
The lyrics were actually written by Harry Chapin’s wife Sandra as a poem, years before Harry wrote the music. Sandra was inspired by the awkward relationship between her first husband, and his father. After the birth of the Chapin’s son Josh, Harry remembered the poem, realising that he too was getting caught up in the same situation, he wrote the music, admitting, ‘Frankly, this song scares me to death.’ It went onto become Chapin’s most successful recording reaching Number 1 in America, and Canada, in 1974 (see also best songs 474.)
This sad tale tells of a father who is so caught up in work, providing for his family that he never has any quality time to spend with his son. The years fly by, until one day when the father has retired, he requests a meeting with his son, but the father is told by his son that due to his own work commitments, he hasn’t time for them to meet up. The father suddenly realises, his son has grown up just like him.
‘And as I hung up the phone it occurred to me, he’d grown up just like me, my boy was just like me.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
996-A Flock of Seagulls-Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You.)
1982-Number 10 single.
Best Bit-At 0.10.If I ever get around to compiling a best ‘intro’s’ countdown, this could well be Number 1.
A Flock of Seagulls were formed in Liverpool, England, in 1979 by Mike Score, his brother Alister. and Frank Maudsley, Paul Reynolds who co-wrote this song, with Mike Score, joined the band with-in months of them forming. Their strange band name is a lyric taken from The Stranglers song ‘Toiler on the Sea.’ In the States they are best known for their song ‘I Ran,’ which reached Number nine on Billboard, but failed to chart in the UK, but in their home country this is the song they are associated with.
Mike Score has explained the songs meaning,”Wishing’ is about a real person, it was the eve of the first trip we ever took to America, and I had met a girl. We went out for the night, and I didn’t want to forget her, so I said, ‘We’re going on tour and I’ll be back.’ I’d like to get a photograph of you, and she said,’No,’ because you’re going to go on to be famous, and you’ll forget me.’
It appears that there was no fairy tale ending, the girl was right, they never met again.
‘If I had a photograph of you, it’s something to remind me.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
997-Eden Kane-Forget-Me-Not.
1962-Number 3 single.
Best Bit-At 0.41.If you think of three very talented musical brothers, you instantly think Bee Gees, but what about the Sarstedts’
Eden Kane was born Richard Sarstedt on March 29th, 1940 in Croyden, London, England. Both of his brothers have also had hit singles as solo artists, his brother Peter (1941-2017,) had a UK Number 1 single in 1969 with ‘Where Do You Go To My Lovely,'(see also best songs 910) and the youngest brother Clive, using his stage name Robin Sarstedt, made Number 3 in 1976, with his Hoagy Carmichael cover of ‘My Resistance is Low.’
Eden Kane was an early 1960’s Teen Idol, charting with five top ten singles between 1961-1964, his biggest success being the UK Number 1, ‘Well I Ask You.’ That song was written by Les Vandyke, arranged by John Keating, (1927-2015,) and produced by Bunny Lewis (1918-2001,) the same trio that worked on this song. Les Vandyke was also responsible for many of the early Adam Faith hits, including both his UK Number 1 singles,’What Do You Want'(see also best songs 745) and ‘Poor Me.’
‘There’s no need to remind me, loves afire when the kisses grow hot.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
998-Icona Pop featuring Charli XCX- I Love It.
2013-Number 1 single.
Best Bit-At 2.23. It’s Pop, It’s Punk, It’s Electro. It’s Rock ‘N’ Roll, I Love It.
Music producer Patrick Berger sent English singer Charlie XCX two beats to work on, one of them ended up being the song ‘You’re the One,’ which peaked at Number 10 on Billboard in 2012, the other was to become ‘I Love it.’ Charlie XCX didn’t think that the sound of ‘I Love It’ fitted in with the type of music she was recording at that time, so she left the track off her debut Album ‘True Romance.’
The Swedish duo of Icona Pop, Caroline Hjelt, and Aino Jawo, heard Charlie XCX’s version of the song, and recorded it in an ‘Electro Pop’ style, with Charlie XCX providing the vocals, it was produced by Swedish born Johan Eklow, under his stage name of ‘Style of Eye.’ The song has sold 4.3 million copies to date worldwide.
Caroline Hjelt explained the songs meaning,’It’s a song about getting out of a really bad heartbreak, you slowly get on your feet again, and then one day you feel a little bit stronger, and then you realise like, you know what, I deserve better, and you feel kind of empowered again.’
‘You’re on a different road, I’m in the Milky Way, you want me down on earth, but I am up in space.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
999-Foo Fighters-Monkey Wrench.
1997-Number 12 single.
Best Bit-At 3.11.The best temper tantrum in Rock ‘N’ Roll history.
Born in Warren, Ohio, January 14,1969. David Grohl was already a superstar before forming the Foo Fighters, as he had been the drummer with Nirvana. Grohl has always said that he was in awe of the writing talents of Kurt Cobain, stating that during his time in Nirvana he would write many songs which he didn’t offer to the group, as he felt Cobain’s music was the sound of Nirvana (see also best songs 788 and 9.)
After the death of Cobain, and the split of Nirvana, Grohl recorded those songs, and they made up the majority of the Foo Fighters self titled debut Album, on which Grohl also played every instrument, apart from the guitar on track ten, ‘X-Static,'(see also best songs 292.)
In 1996 Grohl recruited Pat Smear (guitar,) Nate Mendal (bass,) and William Goldsmith (drummer,) to record the follow up Album, ‘The Colour and the Shape,’ from where ‘Monkey Wrench’ was taken. Ghrol has stated that the song is about the break up of his marriage to Jennifer Youngblood, he said ‘It’s about living with someone, and feeling like you’re living in a f..king cell.’
‘One last thing before I quit,I never wanted anymore than I could fit in to my head……’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.

On June 29th, 2017 I began publishing my day by day countdown of the 1000 best songs in the world ever, which came to it’s end on March 24th, 2020, with the revealing of the worlds best ever song, this is how it all began.

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
1000-The First Class-Beach Baby.
1974-Number 13 single.
Best Bit-At 3.19.The best Surf song The Beach Boys never wrote.
Beach Baby was co-written by John Carter, born John Shakespeare, on October 20th,1942, and his wife Gillian who wrote the lyrics. Carter is a prolific songwriter, with many hit songs to his name, including ‘Let’s Go to San Francisco,’ a hit for The Flowerpot Men, ‘Funny How Love Can Be,’ for the Ivy League, and ‘Knock, knock, Who’s There,’ for Mary Hopkin. He was a member of The Ivy League in the 1960’s, when they provided backing vocals for The Who on their 1965 song ‘I Can’t Explain.’ Carter’s voice can also be heard singing the lead vocal on the New Vaudeville Band’s 1966 Number 4 hit ‘Winchester Cathedral.’
When Beach Baby was recorded there was no band called ‘The First Class,'(a band was later put together to promote the song and go on tour,) the lead vocals are sung by session musician Tony Burrows, who was also the lead vocal on Edison Lighthouses’ 1970 Number 1 ‘Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes.’
Beach Baby maybe the most happy go lucky summer song you will ever hear, but it’s lyrics are sad.The narrator is reminiscing about the time he was in love, and he thought that she loved him too, but they drifted apart, and now he wonders if she even remembers who he is.
‘That’s where you told me that you’d wear my ring I guess you don’t remember anything.’

THE BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.

To compliment my recently completed ‘1000 BEST SONGS LIST,’ here is another that just missed the cut.

1055-The All-American Rejects-Gives You Hell.
2009-Number 18 single.
Bet Bit-At 2.47.They say that bottling things up is not good for you, so here is the perfect song to express your true feelings.
The All-American Rejects are an Alternative Rock/Pop Rock group, formed in 1999 in Stillwater, Oklahoma, U.S. by Nick Wheeler, and Tyson Ritter, who met while still at high school. To date they have released four studio Albums, the most recent being 2012’s ‘Kids in the Street.’ In the UK they have had three top 20 singles, the most successful being their debut hit ‘Swing Swing,’ which peaked at Number 13, in 2002.
‘Gives You Hell’ is the bands signature tune, selling more than 5.000.000 copies worldwide. The song tells of a relationship which has broken down, the narrator is telling his ex that the life she wanted them to lead, hasn’t worked out as well as the path he chose to take on his own. THE BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.

To compliment my recently completed ‘1000 BEST SONGS LIST,’ here is another that just missed the cut.

1054-Barbie Gaye-My Boy Lollypop.
1956-Has never charted in the UK.
Best Bit-0.02.Sometimes to know what a song is all about, you have to suck it and see.
‘My Boy Lollypop,’ originally called My Girl Lollypop, was written in the mid 1950’s by Robert Spencer of the ‘Doo-Wop’ group The Cadillacs. The song was purchased by the notorious American music entrepreneur Morris Levy(1927-1990,) and the alleged gangster Johnny Roberts, both were listed as the songs writers with Spencer’s name being removed. The song caught the attention of alleged mobster, and concert promoter Gaetano Vastola, who had recently been introduced to a 14 year old singer called Barbie Gaye, who recorded the original version of this song.
Although the song has what sounds like a ‘Ska’ beat, it would be years before that genre would be modified in Jamaica. In fact the beat used was known as the ‘Shuffle,’a style of R&B music developed in the early 1940’s in America’s black community’s, and played by artists such as Rosco Gordon, and Louis Jordan.
The best known recording of the song was by the Jamaican singer Millie Small, in 1964, whose version reached both Number 2 in the UK, and on Billboard. Chris Blackwell the founder of ‘Island Records’ knew of the song, and this recording by Millie Small ,produced by Blackwell, went on to sell in excess of six million copies worldwide, establishing the Island Record label.
‘You are as sweet as candy, you are my sugar dandy.’

THE BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.

To compliment my recently completed ‘1000 BEST SONGS,’ here is another that just missed the cut..

1053-M-Beat featuring General Levy-Incredible.
1994-Number 8 single.
Best Bit-At 0.58.Back in the day this song was more ‘Massive’ than the Amazon Jungle.
Jungle music is a genre of Electronic music that developed in the early 1990’s in England, as part of the UK rave scene, it was the predecessor to Drum and Bass, which became popular later in that decade.
‘Incredible’ was produced by Marlon Hart, using his working name of M-Beat, he would go on to have a further two top twenty singles with ‘Sweet Love,’ featuring Nazlyn, and ‘Do U Know Where You’re Coming From,’ featuring Jamiroquai.
The song was written and performed by Paul Levy, better known by his stage name General Levy. At the time of the songs success Levy caused controversy by telling ‘The Face’ magazine, that ‘I run Jungle at the moment,’ many thought that Levy was commercialising the genre, and selling out, the controversy has since died down, and now he is cited as one of the UK.MC’s ‘Who changed the game.’
General Levy recently bridged the generation gap when performing on one of the remixes of AJ Tracey’s 2019 Number 3 hit ‘Ladbroke Grove'(see also best songs 1015.)
‘So wah, booyaka booyaka, when the General ah pass, booyaka booyaka, M-Beat run the dance.’

Best Bit-At 0.45.The late great DJ Alan ‘Fluff’ Freeman tried to get all his ‘Pop Pickers’ to buy this song, by constantly playing it on his radio shows, ‘All Right,’ unfortunately his good taste did not rub off on the general public, and the song was never a hit, ‘Not Arf!’
