‘The Girl from Ipanema’ was written by Antonio Carlos Jobim(1927-1994,) with lyrics by Vinicius de Moraes(1913-1980,) the English lyrics were written by Norman Gimbel(1927-2018.) The song was inspired by Heloisa Pinto a seventeen year old girl living in Ipanema. Daily she would walk past the Veloso cafe bar,someday’s stopping to buy cigarettes for her mother and leaving to the sound of wolf whistles.In the winter of 1962 the composers saw the girl pass by the bar,since the song became popular she has become a celebrity.
After the Beatles song ‘Yesterday,'(see also best songs 319)’The Girl from Ipanema’ is the worlds most recorded pop song.

Best Bit-At.2.41.I believe that an artist records all their best work early on in their careers,but like every good rule there are always exceptions.This was the last song that Jim Morrison recorded before his death.
Jim Morrison(see also best songs 460 and 235) (December 8,1943-July 3,1971) put many of his short life’s inspirations into this song.For example some of the lyrics relate to mass murderer Billy Cook who was executed in 1952,while other lyrics echo the American poet Hart Crane’s poem,’Praise for an Urn,’which includes the line ‘Delicate riders of the storm.’Another inspiration was the 1948 Stan Jones song ‘(Ghost) Riders in the Sky,’made popular when recorded by Johnny Cash.
My interpretation of the song is that we are born into a world where we have to make the most of every opportunity,but along the way there are many dangers,but if we work together we can win out in the end.

A lot of music critics cite this song as the start of ‘Heavy Metal’ music,influencing bands such as Black Sabbath and Deep Purple,some have said that Led Zeppelin were as important to the 1970’s as the Beatles were to the 1960’s.
‘Whole Lotta Love’ started out as a guitar riff written by Jimmy Page and developed by the other band members Robert Plant,John Bonham and John Paul Jones.Lead singer Robert Plant provided the lyrics which were contested in a court case in 1985 by Blues artist Willie Dixon who claimed that parts of his song ‘You Need Love’ recorded by Muddy Waters in 1962 had been used without his consent,Dixon won the case receiving back dated royalties and his name was added to the songs writing credits.

Cumberland Gap is a traditional folk song originating from the Eastern United States and dating back to the latter half of the 19th Century.The songs title refers to the Cumberland Gap,a mountain pass in the Appalachian Mountains at the juncture of the States of Tennessee,Virginia and Kentucky.
The first recording of the song was in 1924 from the American ‘Old Time’ fiddle player Ambrose Gaines ‘Unkle Am’ Stuart.Other notable recordings are from Woodie Guthrie from the mid 1940’s and a live version performed by Earl Scruggs at the Newport Folk Festival in 1959.
In 1957 Lonnie Donegan,MBE(1931-2002) (see also best songs 484) took his Skiffle version to Number 1 in the UK for five weeks.
Before the Beatles,Donegan was Britain’s most successful and influential artist. In order to promote the up and coming solo career of Diana Ross who had recently departed The Supremes,the head of Motown Records Berry Gordy came up with the brilliant idea of telling the world that Ross had discovered The Jacksons,he called their debut Album ‘Diana Ross Presents The Jackson 5.’In-fact the person who put Gordy in touch with the brothers was Motown employee Bobby Taylor through his acquaintance with Gladys Knight who knew of The Jacksons(see also best songs 812-511-249 and 191.)
‘I Want You Back’ was co-written by Berry Gordy,Freddie Perren (who would go on to write ‘I Will Survive’ for Gloria Gaynor,) Alphonso Nizell and Deke Richards(see also best songs 365.) Together these four songwriters worked under the banner of ‘The Corporation’ along with other artists signed with the Motown label.Each of the first four Jackson 5 singles(I Want You Back,ABC,The Love You Save and I’ll Be There) were all credited to The Corporation an all went to Number 1 on Billboard.

Dizzee Rascal(see also best songs 652) was born Dylan Mills,18 September,1984 in Bow,London,his debut Album from 2003 ‘Boy in da Corner’ won him the ‘Mercury Prize’ for that years best Album,he has also appeared on five UK Number 1 singles.
‘Bonkers’ was co-written by Dizzee Rascal and American music producer Armand Van Helden,their collaboration was explained by Dizzee Rascal,’Armand approached me and sent me an email saying he wanted to work together.As soon as I heard the name I was on to it.The song came with the ‘bonkers’ bit on it so it was almost a no-brainer for me,the song needed to be about being bonkers.’

Prince Buster(see also best songs 734) wrote this song in 1964 which first appeared as the ‘B-side’ to his single ‘Al Capone.’The song was brought to the attention of a whole new generation when British Ska group Madness(see also best songs 801) took their version to Number 7 in the UK chart in 1979.
Prince Buster(24 May,1938-8 September,2016) was born Cecil Bustamente Campbell in Kingston,Jamaica,the music he recorded and released in the 1960’s has heavily influenced the genres of Reggae and Ska.
The UK Ska revival at the end of the 1970’s owes a big debt to Prince Buster,Madness who took their name from one of Buster’s songs also had a hit with a tribute song to him called ‘The Prince,’while The Specials(see also best songs 924 and 372) borrowed heavily from ‘Al Capone’ for their hit ‘Gangsters.’

Best Bit-At 2.32.Ever wondered how Daft Punk got their name?(probably not) well now you can find out.
Daft Punk are the duo of Thomas Bangalter and Guy Manuel de Homen-Christo,they originally played together in an Indie Rock band called ‘Darlin” named after The Beach Boys song.A negative review in ‘Melody Maker’ magazine by Dave Jennings called the music of Darlin’ ‘A daft punky thrash,’ this amused Bangalter and Homem-Christo who decided it was a good name for their new project.After Darlin’ disbanded they joined forces and changed their musical style by experimenting with drum machines and synthesizers.
‘Da Funk’ was initially released in 1995 to little success,but did receive a boost when The Chemical Brothers incorporated it into their live shows.After a bidding war amongst several record labels Daft Punk signed with ‘Virgin’ and released their debut Album ‘Homework.’
As for the songs video Bangalter has stated,’There is no story.It is just a man-dog walking with a ghetto-blaster in New York.Is it about human tolerance?Integration?Urbanism? There’s really no message.There will be a sequel someday.’
