THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
141-The Beatles-All You Need Is Love.
1967-Number 1 single.
Best Bit-At 3.23.At the current time of writing the record for a song being viewed on YouTube in a 24 hour period is 74,600,000 held by Japanese boy band ‘BTS’ featuring Halsey with the song ‘Boy With Luv.’ Small fry in comparison to what the Beatles did 52 years earlier.
On June 25,1967 the Beatles were asked to take part in the very first ever live international satellite television programme called ‘Our World.’Alongside other creative artists such as Opera singer Maria Callas and painter Pablo Picasso they were performers representing nineteen nations over a two and a half hour broadcast to twenty four countries around the world,’All You Need Is Love’ was performed for the first time live to an estimated audience of somewhere between 400-700 million people.
The song was written by John Lennon(see also best songs 927-599-473-456-319-238-218 and 168) who realising he could send out a message to the world made the lyrics as simple as possible so every nation could understand them. The time of this songs recording has become known as the ‘Summer of Love.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
142-Wham-Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go.
1984-Number 1 single.
Best Bit-At 0.36.If your a DJ playing to the 40-60 age group and you can’t think what to play, try this and if they don’t dance it’s not your fault.
Andrew Ridgeley needed a wake up call so he left a note for his mother on his door,he wrote ‘Wake me up up’ and realising he duplicated a word finished the sentence with ‘Before you go go.’George Michael(see also best songs 991 and 342) thought that was funny and decided to use it for a song title.
A ‘go-go’ is a name used to describe a dance club and dancing is the theme of this song. The lyrics tell the story of someone who sleeps while his girlfriend goes out dancing,he is upset by this and tells her to wake him up next time.
The song has a retro feel to it,opening with the word Jitterbug repeated four times, the Jitterbug was a very popular dance in the 1930’s.Another nod to the past comes with the name checking of the late great Doris Day.
‘You take the grey skies out of my way,you make the sun shine brighter than Doris Day.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
143-Parliament-Aqua Boogie(A Psychoalphadiscobetabioaquadoloop.)
1978-Has never charted in the UK.
Best Bit-At 0.37.If music is a universal language then ‘Psychoalphadiscobetabioaquadoloop’ is a bit hard to fathom.
It is actually writer George Clinton’s attempt to create his own ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,’ as heard in ‘Mary Poppins.’
Many people thought that the song was about having a party or dancing underwater,it isn’t. The water imagery is a metaphor for how people had to bend and jump through hoops to deal with life in America at that time.
George Clinton formed two bands simultaneously in the mid 1960’s due to contractual problems with his record label, they were Parliament(see also best songs 612) and the more Rock orientated Funkadelic(see also best songs 340,) their sound was to become known as ‘P-Funk.’
Clinton was born on July 22,1941 in Kannapolis,North Carolina,he is regarded along with James Brown and Sly Stone as one of the foremost innovators of Funk music.
‘I hate water,let me go,put me down,you’re all wet.’

1995-Number 23 single.
Best Bit-At 2.29.’It’s important to be nice, but it’s more nice to be important’….Oh silly me,I’ve got it the wrong way around again.
Scooter were formed in 1993 by H.P.Baxter,born Hans Peter Geedes(born 1963) in Leer,West Germany and Rick J.Jordan(born 1968) in Hanover,Germany. They actually first met in 1985 after they both replied to a classified advertisement, together they formed the Synth-Pop/New Wave band ‘Celebrate the Nun.’The new band achieved initial success but they realised that as musical tastes changed they too would have to take their sound in a different direction, hence the move to ‘Techno’ and ‘Happy Hardcore.’
Scooter(see also best songs 437) are the most successful chart act in their home country of Germany, having to date achieved 42 top 40 singles, they have also sold over 30 million records worldwide.

145-Barbra Streisand-The Way We Were.
1974-Number 31 single.
Best Bit-At 1.30.This is one of only three songs in my countdown to appear twice,(see also best songs 931 and 560) and also(214) they are recorded in radically different ways by different artists and are therefore worthy of inclusion.
‘The Way We Were’ was written for the 1973 film of the same name with lyrics by Alan Bergman and his wife Marilyn Bergman, the music was written by Marvin Hamlisch(1944-2012.) The song went on to become the biggest selling single in America in 1974,while the film won two Oscar’s,for best original dramatic score and best original song.

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
146-Glen Miller and His Orchestra-In the Mood.
1939-Has never charted. There was no UK chart until 1952.
Best Bit-At 2.44.The false ending would catch out(I won’t call them DJ’s since it was 1939) music presenters,as it was very rare if ever up until then that a song would conclude in such a manner.
I suppose this song is a very early example of sampling.’In the Mood’ is ‘based’ on the composition ‘Tar Paper Stomp’ written and performed in 1930 by American Jazz trumpeter Wingy Manone(1900-1982) hence his name being added to the writing credits. Also credited is the songs arranger American Jazz saxophonist Joe Garland(1903-1977.) The first version of Garland’s arrangement was made in 1938 by Edgar Hayes and his Orchestra, but it wasn’t until Glen Miller(see also best songs 808 and 321) recorded his version that it became the most successful Swing instrumental of all time,Miller also performed the song in the 1941 movie ‘Sun Valley Serenade.’
Some versions of the song have lyrics, they were written by Andy Razaf(1893-1973.) Razaf was an African-American poet, composer and lyricist, two of his best known songs are ‘Ain’t Misbehavin”and ‘Honeysuckle Rose.’

148-The Supremes-You Can’t Hurry Love.
1966-Number 3 single.
Best Bit-At 0.01.The group were originally known as ‘The Primettes,’Tamla Motown owner Berry Gordy refused to sign them unless they changed their name.He gave Florence Ballard a choice between ‘the Darleens,’the Sweet P’s,’the Melodees,’the Royaltones,’the Jewelettes’ or ‘The Supremes,’on Ballard choosing The Supremes(see also best songs 411 and 212) Diana Ross expressed her disappointment saying ‘It felt too masculine.’
‘You Can’t Hurry Love’ was written by the legendary songwriting team of Holland-Dozier-Holland(see also best songs 969-823-650-553-411 and 212.)The lyrics written by Eddie Holland were inspired by a 1950’s Gospel song by Dorothy Love Coates with the lyrics ‘You can’t hurry God,you just have to wait.’
In 1982 a cover version by Phil Collins became a UK Number 1 single,Collins wanted to replicate the Motown sound with 1980’s technology.Collins version is also famous for being the very first track on the very first ‘Now That’s What I Call Music’ compilations.

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
149-Andrea True Connection-More,More,More.
1976-Number 5 single.
Best Bit-At 0.15.In 2002 Andrea True said,’I want to be remembered as a person who gave people pleasure’-then emphasised the words-‘with my music.’
Andrea Marie Truden(July 26,1943-November 7,2011) was an American pornographic actress who changed her career to become a singer in the Disco era.It was while recording a television commercial in Jamaica that she got in touch with her friend Gregg Diamond who followed her to Jamaica to write and record the song along with local musicians who were to become known as the ‘Connection.’The lyrics of the song perhaps take a nod and a wink at her previous career,’Get the cameras rollin,’get the action goin.’
In 1993 Bananarama took their version of the song to Number 24,but the highest charting remake was from ex S Club 7 singer Rachel Stevens who peaked at Number 3 in 2004.The song was also a hit reaching Number 8 in the UK when sampled by Canadian band ‘Len’ in 1999 with the title ‘Steal My Sunshine.’
‘So take me where you want to,boy my heart you steal.’
