THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
160-The Rolling Stones-Miss You.
1978-Number 3 single.
Best Bit-At 2.18.The Stones once sang ‘It’s Only Rock ‘N’ Roll But I Like It.’But this isn’t just ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll’,its Disco as well.
Like Lennon and McCartney,Jagger and Richards(see also best songs 933-662 and 452) always shared writing credits no matter who wrote what,in the case of ‘Miss You’ it was all Jagger.
The song was written in 1977 during rehearsals with Billy Preston for performances in Canada. The critically acclaimed ‘Bass’ on the song was written and performed by Bill Wyman who recalled,’When I did the riff for Miss You,which made the song, and every band in the world copied it for the next year,Rod Stewart, all of them,it still said Jagger/Richards.When I wrote the riff for ‘Jumpin’ Jack Flash’,it became Jagger/Richards and that’s the way it was.It just became part and parcel of the way the band functioned.’
‘Hey,what’s the matter man,we’re gonna come around at twelve with some Puerto Rican girls that are just dyin’ to meet you.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
161-Nat King Cole-When I Fall In Love.
1957-Number 2 single.When re-released in 1987 it peaked at Number 4.
Best Bit-At 0.18.Why was Nat King Cole the greatest singer of the pre Rock ‘N’ Roll era? Imagine listening to a song that aggravates the hell out of you, then imagine him singing it….it sounds better already doesn’t it.
‘When I Fall In Love’ was written by Victor Young,(1900-1956) with lyrics by Edward Heyman(1907-1981.) It was first performed by Jeri Southern(1926-1991) in the 1952 film ‘One Minute To Zero.’The first artist to have a hit with the song was Doris Day who took her version to Number 20 on Billboard in 1952.
Nat King Cole’s(see also best songs 988-327 and 226) version first appeared on his 1956 Album ‘Love Is The Thing’ and was used in the 1957 film ‘Istanbul.’In 1987 to celebrate it’s 30th anniversary it was reissued to challenge a version by Rick Astley, with both competing for the Christmas Number 1,with sales being split it let The Pet Shop Boys sneak in to win the prestigious Xmas top spot with ‘Always On My Mind.’Astley’s version peaked at Number 2 and Cole’s at Number 4.
‘And the moment I can feel that you feel that way too,is when I fall in love with you.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
162-Sylvester-You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real.)
1978-Number 8 single.
Best Bit-At 2.17.I can see why Jimmy Somerville and Byron Stingily both did cover versions and I could imagine The Bee Gees or even Frankie Valli making a very good attempt, but Barry White would have had no chance.
‘You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real’) is one of the most important songs in the development of Dance Music,it was originally recorded as a mid-tempo piano based Gospel song.On hearing it music producer Patrick Cowley(1950-1982) offered to remix it in a style that was to become known as ‘Hi-NRG’ and that form of music would lead on to Electronic Dance Music and Techno and Dance Music as we know it in the 21st Century.
Sylvester James Jr. was born in Los Angeles,California in 1947 and died at the age of 41 in 1988,he was known for his flamboyant and androgynous appearance and his falsetto singing voice, along with James Wirrick he was the co-writer of this song.
‘You mean I’ve been dancin’ on the floor darlin’ and I feel like I need some more.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
163-Sigue Sigue Sputnik-Love Missile F1-11.
1986-Number 3 single.
Best Bit-At 0.30.The lyrics tell of the perils of living in a nuclear war threatened world in the mid 1980’s,and in order to escape the terrors of what might be the narrator turns to sex and drugs for his escapism,at least that’s the way I see it.
Sigue Sigue Sputnik were formed in 1982 by Tony James and Neal X (Whitmore) who then recruited singer Martin Degville and drummer Mark Laff. James and Whitmore had both previously been members of the very successful Punk Rock band Generation X alongside Billy Idol(see also best songs 945.)
‘Love Missile F1-11’ features many sound effects and samples from film dialogue, this came about as James was a big fan of movies. The song was produced by the legendary music producer Giorgio Moroder, known as the ‘Father of Disco’ and one of the major players in the development of Electronic Dance Music, there will be more about him later on in this countdown.
‘The U.S. bombs cruising overhead, but there goes my love rocket red.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
166-Wu-Tang Clan-Gravel Pit.
2000-Number 6 single.
Best Bit-At 0.25.When Hip-Hop made sense,not cents.
The Wu-Tang Clan were formed in 1991 in New York City, they are critically acclaimed with ‘Rolling Stone’ magazine calling them ‘the best Rap group ever,’in 2004 ‘NME’ magazine hailed them as one of the most influential groups of the last ten years.Band members RZA and The ODB chose the groups name as a tribute to the 1983 Hong Kong martial arts film ‘Shaolin and Wu Tang.’
Gravel Pit is taken from the bands third studio Album ‘The W’ released in the year 2000 and to date is their only UK top 40 single. The female vocals are provided by Paulissa Moorman and the three verses are performed by Method Man,(see also best songs 359) Ghostface Killah and U-God,other spoken parts are provided by RZA and Raekwon. THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
167-The Smiths-What Difference Does It Make.?
1984-Number 12 single.
Best Bit-At 2.39.It would have been useful to have hired The Bee Gees for this bit.
The character Ray Smith in the Jack Kerouac novel ‘The Dharma Burns’ repeatedly says ‘What difference does it make?’ as well as ‘Pretty girls make graves,’ which is also the title of another song on The Smiths self titled debut Album.
The song is about being rejected by a close friend after they find out a secret about you. There have always been strong rumours that The Smiths front man Morrissey is singing about how he was snubbed by a friend after revealing that he was gay.
As usual the music was written by Johnny Marr with lyrics by Morrissey(see also best songs 940-673 and 222,) who has stated his distaste for the song. Morrissey has said ‘The song is musically interesting but lyrically it is very….Simon Le Bon. I find the lyrics facile and mildly embarrassing.’
‘All men have secrets and here is mine.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
168-Plastic Ono Band-Give Peace A Chance.
1969-Number 2 single.
Best Bit-At 0.34.When Lennon saw television footage of nearly half a million anti-Vietnam War protesters singing this song outside the White House in November 1969,he considered it to be ‘one of the biggest moments of my life.’
As the Vietnam War was taking place in 1969 John Lennon(see also best songs 927-599-473-456-319-238 and 218) and his wife Yoko Ono held a ‘Bed-In’ for peace in The Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal,Canada. The idea was for Lennon and Ono to attract as much publicity as possible for their agenda which was the promotion of making peace, not war. They invited several influential celebrities and members of the press to join them in their hotel bedroom during the eight day peaceful protest.
It was during that time that ‘Give Peace A Chance’ was recorded, some of the people in the hotel room who sang or played on the song included The Smothers Brothers,Timothy Leary,Allen Ginsberg and Petula Clark. After the live recording had been made it was taken to the studio, where the finishing touches were completed.
‘All we are saying is give peace a chance.’
