Cumberland Gap is a traditional folk song originating from the Eastern United States and dating back to the latter half of the 19th Century.The songs title refers to the Cumberland Gap,a mountain pass in the Appalachian Mountains at the juncture of the States of Tennessee,Virginia and Kentucky.
The first recording of the song was in 1924 from the American ‘Old Time’ fiddle player Ambrose Gaines ‘Unkle Am’ Stuart.Other notable recordings are from Woodie Guthrie from the mid 1940’s and a live version performed by Earl Scruggs at the Newport Folk Festival in 1959.
In 1957 Lonnie Donegan,MBE(1931-2002) (see also best songs 484) took his Skiffle version to Number 1 in the UK for five weeks.
Before the Beatles,Donegan was Britain’s most successful and influential artist. Paul McCartney said,’We all bought guitars to be in a Skiffle group.he was the man.’Brian May said,’He really was the cornerstone of English Blues and Rock.’Roger Daltrey said,’The man who really made me feel like I could actually go out and do it was a chap by the name of Lonnie Donegan.’
