One of the best things about writing about these songs is that i can introduce you to a song or an artist you otherwise would probably never get to know.
Jim Capaldi (2nd August, 1944- 28th January, 2005) was an English drummer,singer and songwriter.
He co-founded the Psychedelic Rock band Traffic in 1967 with Steve Winwood.He co-wrote two of Traffic’s top ten singles,’Paper Sun’ and ‘Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush.’His biggest solo hit was with a cover version of the song ‘Love Hurts'(originally by The Everly Brothers) which peaked at Number four in 1975.

Best Bit-At 1.14.This is one of a handful of songs in this top 1000 countdown that have beeen greatly improved for a remix.
The track was written and performed as a Hip Hop song by Kid Cudi as his debut release,on hearing it Kanye West signed Cudi to his ‘Good Music’ record label.
In 2008 Italian production duo ‘Crookers’ remixed the song and that was when it took off in Europe.Cudi had reservations before hearing the remix,he said,’Ah it’s techno so it’s going to be cheesy,but it came out really ill.’

Best Bit-At 1.05.All the biggest Pop Stars have a nickname,this one is ‘The Godfather Of Grunge.’
The song deals with the fleeting nature of fame and how hard it is to stay relevant as an artist.Neil Young felt at that time that his music had all but had it’s day especially with the coming of Punk.
There are two versions of this song,Hey,Hey My My(Into The Blue) is acoustic and this version Hey,Hey My My(Into The Black) is Rock.
A line from the acoustic version of the song,’It’s better to burn out than to fade away,’became infamous after being quoted in Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain’s suicide note.

Best Bit-At 1.30. British Steel had to take drastic measures,they were worried that this song would put potential future employees off wanting to work for them.
The song is about overpowering parents who think they know best for their child.
The lyrics are told from the point of view of parents who are certain that their son Nigel is ‘happy in his work,’affirming that his future in British Steel ‘is as good as sealed.’
As a response to the song,British Steel gathered four Sheffield employees named Nigel to talk about job satisfaction for the company’s trade publication ‘Steel News.’
‘Nigel is not outspoken but he likes to speak and loves to be spoken to.’

The People’s Choice were formed in 1971 in Philadelphia by Frank Brunson and David Thompson.On hearing their debut single ‘I Like To Do It’ Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff of Philadelphia International Records signed them up.
‘Do It Anyway You Wanna’ was written by Leon Huff and has to date sold over one million copy’s.The song formed the basis of the 1977 Reggae hit ‘Cocaine In My Brain’ by Dillinger,(see best songs 817)which was a Number 1 single in Holland.

Jarvis Cocker and several different incarnations of Pulp had been trying to get a hit since 1978,this song finally provided the breakthrough.
To promote the single Cocker put together a collection of interviews with celebrities recounting their ‘first time.’The 25 minute film features the likes of John Peel,Jo Brand and Vic Reeves.Terry Hall of The Specials has perhaps the best line,’She was into the Bay City Rollers,which put me off a bit,but not enough.’

Crudup was born in Mississippi to a family of migrant workers in 1905.He is a very important figure in the development of Rock ‘N’ Roll,in 1946 he wrote ‘That’s All Right ‘the song which Elvis Presley recorded as his first single in 1954.In 1956 Presley also recorded ‘My Baby Left Me’ for the ‘B’ side of his single ‘I Want You,I Need You,I Love You.’

The Stranglers formed in 1974 and were one of the instigators of the UK Punk scene,but unlike many of their contemporaries they were still having hits as late as 1990 due to changing their musical stye to go with the times.
‘Duchess’ is a song about a girl claiming to be an heiress who has hit on hard times.She knows all her family history,saying she descends from King Henry V111.When she was well to do men from the lower classes would attempt to raise their profile by trying to court her,these chancer’s are known as ‘Rodney’s,’of whom her parents would strongly disapprove.
