It is the 4th week of the New Year and we remain starved of new music on the UK top 40 singles chart. This week there is only 1 new entry and in fact in the whole month of January there have been only 7 new entries.

Mark Ronson ft Bruno Mars with ‘Uptown Funk’ holds on to the Number 1 spot and now has achieved a 6th unconsequitive week at the top.  Ronsons LP ‘Uptown Special’ also holds the top spot on the Album chart. The last song to spend 6 weeks at Number 1 was ‘We Found Love’ from Rihanna ft Calvin Harris back in November 2011.The last song to spend 7 weeks at the top was ‘Bleeding Love’ from Leona Lewis during November and December 2007.

The only new entry this week is at Number 2 for Meghan Trainor who is no longer a one hit wonder. The follow up to ‘All About That Bass’ (4 weeks at Number 1 last year) is ‘Lips Are Movin’, as with ‘All About That Bass’ the song is co- written by Trainor and Kevin Kadish, Kadish also produced the track. The song has already peaked at Number 3 in Australia and Number 4 in America where it has sold over 1 million copies to date. Both songs feature on Trainors debut Album which is called ‘Title’.

Hozier holds on to the Number 3 spot with ‘Take Me to Church’ and Philip George drops 2 to Number 4 with ‘Wish You Were Mine’. Olly Murs ft Demi Lovato with ‘Up’ drops down 1 place to Number 5. Avicci whose song ‘The Nights’  was a new entry at Number 16 last week climbs 8 places, while last week’s other new entry from Sia with ‘Elastic Heart’ climbs 2 to 11. Echosmith with ‘Cool Kids’ continues to climb, it’s up another 11 places to Number 17 this week.

As always enjoy the music.

For the last 3 weeks in a row there have been  only 2 new entries on the top 40 singles chart, but the lack of competition should not take away anything from the achievements of the Mark Ronson ft Bruno Mars song ‘Uptown Funk’. Its sales for the time of year suggest it would be hard to shift from the top spot no matter what the competition was, the track records a 5th non consecutive week as the most popular song in the UK. The last song to achieve 5 weeks at Number 1 was ‘Blurred Lines’ from Robin Thicke back on 20th July 2013. On 19th November 2011 Rihanna ft Calvin Harris with ‘We Found Love’ managed 6 weeks at the top, that song holds the record of the longest stay at Number 1 so far this decade. Looking back to the previous decade and from the beginning of this century the song ‘Umbrella’ from Rihanna ft Jay Z back in 2007 is the longest stayer at Number 1 with a total of 10 weeks from May 26th to August 4th.

Just the 2 new songs entered  the top 40 this week, the highest which is at Number 13 for Sia ft The Weeknd and Diplo with ‘Elastic Heart’. Sia Kate Isobelle Furler is from Adelaide Australia and this is her 3rd hit single as lead artist. Her breakthrough hit was back in 2000 with the Number 10 single ‘Taken For Granted’ but it was with ‘Chandelier’ last year that she is best known, the song peaked at Number 6 and is still in the current top 40 at Number 19 in its 29th week. ‘Elastic Heart’ is from her 6th and current Album released last year called ‘10000 Forms Of Fear’. Sia has also charted 5 times as a featured artist, most notably providing the vocals on the David Guetta 2011 Number 1 ‘Titanium’.

The other new entry is at Number 16 for Avicci with ‘The Nights’, this is his 10th hit as lead artist and the song features uncredited  vocals from Nicholas Furlong who also co-wrote the song. Furlong has worked as a writer and producer with artists such as 5 Seconds Of Summer  and The Wanted, but this is his 1st UK charting song.

As always enjoy the music.

Little stirrings occurring on week 2 of this year’s new top 40 singles chart, on week 1 there were just the 2 new songs and it’s a repeat this week with 2 more.

The big news is that ‘Uptown Funk’ from Mark Ronson ft Bruno Mars holds on to the top spot, this now gives the song a 4th non consecutive week as the Number 1 equalling the feats of Meghan Trainor (’All About That Bass’) and Clean Bandit (‘Rather Be’ )from last year. Lasts weeks highest new entry from Philip George with ‘Wish You Were Mine’ holds on to the 2nd spot and Ed Sheeran with his former Number 1 ‘Thinking Out Loud’ stays at Number 3 for a 3rd consecutive week. Olly murs with ‘Up’ the 2nd single from his 4th Album ‘Never Been Better’ climbs 2 to 4 and Hozier with ‘Take Me To Church’ climbs 5 places to Number  5 a new peak in its 24th week on the top 40, it’s his debut chart single .

The highest new entry is at Number 7 for Tchami  ft Kaleem Taylor with ‘Promesses’, Tchami is the stage name of French Dj music producer Martin Bresso and this song is his 3rd single release. Up until this hit he has been best known for remixing other artists tracks most notably a 2013 remix of the Janet Jackson song ‘Go Deep’, he has also toured with the likes of Skrillex, Diplo and Dj Snake.

The other new entry is at Number 39 for Echosmith with ‘Cool Kids’, Echosmith are an American Indie/Rock band and this track originally appeared on the bands 2013 debut Album ‘Talking Dreams’. The song has tasted success elsewhere, in America  on Billboard it reached Number 13 and in Germany it peaked at Number 9, the songs biggest success’s to date have been in Australia, Denmark and Belgium where it has reached Number 6.Echosmith are all related as they are 3 brothers and a sister, Graham Sierota is the youngest at 16 years old and is the drummer, Jamie at 22 is the eldest and plays guitar, Noah is 19 and is the bass player and Sydney Grace who  is 18 lead vocalist and keyboard player. The 1st chart of a New Year and as always it is one of the quieter ones. In total there are just 2 new entries and four re-entries.

The first Number 1 single of 2015 is the one which closed the year of 2014 as ‘Uptown Funk’ from Mark Ronson ft Bruno Mars now achieves a 3rd  non consecutive week at Number 1.

The highest new entry is at Number 2 for Philip George with ‘Wish You Were Mine’, George is 21 years old and comes from Nottingham, he is a dance music producer and this his debut single samples the lyrics of the Stevie wonder classic ‘My Cherie Amour’ (Number 4 in the USA and UK in 1969) having heard the track Stevie wonder has given it is blessing and in George is now signed to Motown Records who have given him permission to sample other songs from the Motown vaults.

Holding steady at Number 3 is the ex Number 1 from Ed Sheeran ‘Thinking Out Loud’ and down 2 to 4 is last year’s X Factor winner Ben Haenow with ‘Something I Need’. Taylor Swift drops 1 place to Number 5 with ‘Blank Space’.

The 4 re-entries are from Sigma with ‘Changes’, Pharrell Williams with ‘Happy’, John Legend with ‘All Of Me’ and Lilly Wood with ‘Prayer In C’  are at Numbers 33, 34, 36 and 39 respectively.

The only other song to enter the top 40 this week is at Number 35 for Kanye West ft Paul McCartney and Ty Dolla Sign with ‘Only One’. Last September West and McCartney got together with other artists and recorded 2 songs together in Mexico, ‘Only One’ is a song about West’s daughter, sang from the perspective of his mother Dr Donda West who died in 2007. This is Kanye West’s 22 UK top 40 single as lead artist he has had a further 12 as featured artist. As well as being co writer of the song Paul McCartney plays piano and sings on the track, it is his  1st charting song since ‘Dance Tonight/ Nod Your Head’  from his 2007 Album ‘Memory Almost Full’ peaked at Number 26.
