THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
422-Eddie Cochran-Somethin’ Else.
1959-Number 22 single.
Best Bit-At 1.49.The moral of the song,If you work hard you get what you want.
Eddie Cochran(October 3,1938-April 17.1960) is one of the legendary names in ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll’ and ‘Rockabilly.’His image as a sharply dressed and good looking young man with a rebellious attitude epitomised who a 1950’s rocker wanted to be like.
Cochran died aged 21 in a road accident while travelling from a performance in a taxi in Chippenham,Wiltshire during his British tour in 1960.The speeding taxi blew a tire, the driver lost control and the vehicle crashed in to a lamppost, all the other passengers, who were his manager Pat Thompkins, singer Gene Vincent(see also best songs 757) and Cochran’s fiancee Sharon Sheeley survived.
Somethin’ Else was co-written by Sheeley and Cochran’s elder brother Bob,notable cover versions include Johnny Hallday’s French version titled ‘Elle Est Terrible’ and the Sex Pistols 1979 UK Number 3, with Sid Vicious on lead vocals.
‘I got that girl and I’m a-thinking to myself she’s sure fine lookin’ man wow she’s somethin’ else.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
423-D’banj-Oliver Twist
2012-Number 9 single.
Best Bit-At 3.04. ‘Please sir I want some more.’
Charles Dickens’ poor workhouse boy Oliver Twist famously asked for more gruel, only to be rebuffed by Mr. Bumble. D’banj’s wish is more fanciful,he tells his girlfriend that his desire is to be with famous Pop Divas such as Beyonce and Rihanna but can’t because he is just like Oliver Twist. He then tells his girlfriend that he knows she desires R&B singer Trey Songz and music producer(of this song) Don Jazzy.
D’banj was born Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo on the 9th June 1980 in Zaria,Kaduna State and according to ‘T.I.N.Magazine’ is the richest solo musician in Nigeria.
‘See I like Beyonce but she dey with Jigga,I like Rihanna she dey make me day go gaga.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
424-Technotronic-Pump Up The Jam.
1989-Number 2 single.
Best Bit-At 2.04.It’s a good job the lyrics are not too taxing as Congolese model Felly Kilingi who is lip-syncing couldn’t speak a word of English.
At that time it was considered normal to get someone attractive to appear on the CD sleeve or front the video, the actual vocalist was Belgium Hip-Hop artist Ya Kid K who also wrote the lyrics.
Technotronic was the brainchild of Belgium Electronic music producer Jo Bogaert. In the mid to late 1980’s he was one of the artists responsible for creating the music genre called ‘New Beat’ which would go on to influence the evolution of ‘Industrial Dance,’
Technotronic were no one hit wonders ,in fact they have charted with nine top 40 UK singles.
‘I don’t want a place to stay get your booty on the floor tonight make my day.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
425-Tracy Chapman-Fast Car.
1988-Number 4 single.It re-entered the top 40 again in 2011 and once again reached Number 4.
Best Bit-At 2.01.What about this for an accolade!’Rolling Stone magazine rank the song at 167 on their list of the 500 greatest songs of all time, the highest ranking song both written and performed by a female artist.
On June 11th 1988 Tracy Chapman performed this song at Wembley Stadium as part of the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute. It was that critically acclaimed performance that brought both her and this song to the attention of the masses.
Fast Car tells the story of someone trying to escape a life where there is very little prospect of them bettering themselves because circumstances are heavily weighted against them. The sting in the tail is that what the narrator is trying to escape comes around full circle and history repeats itself.
I find myself thinking of Elvis Presley’s 1969 song ‘In The Ghetto.'(see best songs 442.)
‘You got a fast car but is it fast enough so you can fly away.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
426-Neil Diamond-Cracklin’ Rosie.
1970-Number 3 single
Best Bit-At 2.33 I am confident that from this point onward in this song even I could do a karaoke performance justice.
The song was written for the music director Rosalie Trombley of ‘CKLW’ radio in Ontario,Canada. She was very influential on what got played and could make or break a song, the ‘play it now’ refrain of the song was a direct plea to her.
Cracklin’ Rosie is a type of wine.Diamond(see also best songs 536) heard a story about a native Canadian tribe who had more men than women,so the lonely men of the tribe would sit around the fire and drink their wine together, which inspired him to write the song.
The musicians on the song are ‘The Wrecking Crew’ who played on several classic hits of the 1960’s and 70’s,I will list all the songs they played on in this best 1000 countdown at a later date.

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
427-Alice Cooper-Teenage Lament 74.
1973-Number 12 single.
Best Bit-At 2.45.’We’re not worthy,we’re not worthy.’
Alice Cooper were an American Rock band formed in Phoenix,Arizona in 1964,until their split in 1974 they recorded seven studio Albums. When they split lead singer Vincent Furnier legally changed his name to Alice Cooper so that he could continue with the stage name for his solo career.
Cooper is recognised as being one of the forerunners in ‘Shock Rock,’his elaborate stage shows have been an influence on future Heavy Rock performers.
Teenage Lament 74 was co-written by Cooper and Alice Cooper drummer Neal Smith,it tells of a young boy working his way through adolescence with all the usual trials and tribulations. The song is also noteworthy for it’s female backing vocals which are provided by Liza Minnelli,The Pointer Sisters,Ronnie Spector and La Belle.
‘I ran into my room and I fell down on my knees, well I thought that fifteen was going to be a breeze.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
428-Johnny Cash-San Quentin.
1969-Has never been released as a single in the UK.
Best Bit-At 2.21.Johnny Cash playing to a captive audience.
In total over the course of his career Johnny Cash released four live Albums recorded in prisons.’At Folsom Prison’ from 1968 and ‘At San Quentin’ from 1969 are the two biggest selling live Albums of all time.
In 1968 Cash(see also best songs 857) realised that his career needed a boost,he had already played several ‘prison concerts’ since the late 1950’s and his idea to record a live Album and have the concert recorded paid off.He had written to both the Folsom and San Quentin prisons and because Folsom were the first to respond, they held the first concert.
‘San Quentin what good do you think you do,do you think I’ll be different when your through.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
429-Edwin Starr-Contact.
1979-Number 6 single.
Best Bit-At 4.04.Oi! What’d yu’ think yur lookin’ at!
This song was Edwin Starr’s biggest hit during his Disco phase.Like many artists of that period, due to the phenomenal success of Disco,he too recorded in that genre.
Edwin Starr who died in 2003 was a very successful Tamla Motown recording artist back in the 1960’s,his four Billboard top 30 singles include his cover of the Temptations 1969 Album track ‘War,’which became ‘THE’ anti-Vietnam War protest song when Starr topped the chart with it in 1970,it also reached Number 3 in the UK.
Starr is one of the three co-writers of ‘Contact,’ he is also the songs producer. He wrote a lot of his own material as well as songs for others and many of his 1960’s Motown tracks are still very popular with the Northern Soul community.
‘You were looking at me I was looking at you,you were looking at me.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
430-M People-Movin’ On Up.
1993-Number 2 single.
Best Bit-At 5.09 the ‘Saxy’ bit.
M People were formed in Manchester in 1990 by Mike Pickering and Paul Heard, the name M People is taken from the first letter of the band member Mike Pickering’s first name.
The original idea was to use different vocalists for each new recording but after hearing Heather Small’s very distinctive voice that idea was dropped. The fourth member of the group is Andrew ‘Shovell’ Lovell who is the percussionist.
Although they are still officially together they haven’t released any new material since 1999.Their second Album from 1993.’Elegant Slumming’ won the 1994 ‘Mercury Music Prize.’
All nineteen of their singles reached the UK top 40 with ‘Movin’ On Up being the most successful.A ‘Euro Dance’ version of the song recorded in 1995 by Belgium singer Roselle is also well worth while checking out.
‘They brag a man has walked in space but you can’t even find my place.
