THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
128-N.W.A.-F..k tha Police.
1988-Has never charted in the UK.
Best Bit-At-1.48.Don’t worry, this has nothing to do with Andy,Stuart and Sting, they are completely innocent.
N.W.A(see also best songs 564) is an abbreviation for Niggaz Wit Attitudes, they formed in Los Angeles,California in 1986 and were active until 1991.The original lineup consisted of Arabian Prince,Dr Dre(see also best songs 544 and 482),Easy-E and Ice Cube(see also best songs 681),DJ Yella and MC Ren who joined in 1987.They were one of the most influential groups in the history of Hip-Hop music and one of the first to develop the musical genre that is ‘Gangsta Rap.’
‘F..k tha Police’ is a protest song and first appeared on their critically acclaimed debut Album ‘Straight Outta Compton’ from 1988.The lyrics protest about police brutality and ‘racial profiling’ and has become one of the most controversial songs in the history of Pop Music.
Assistant director of the F.B.I Milt Ahlerich wrote a letter to the bands record label,’Ruthless Records’ in response to the songs message. He claimed N.W.A were advocating violence and disrespect towards the law.Ice Cube said that he was an angry young man when he wrote the song and that he was simply lashing out at the problem of police brutality without understanding it or offering solutions.
‘You’d rather see me in the pen, then me and Lorenzo rollin’ in the Benzo.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.

129-Tom Jones-It’s Not Unusual.
1965-Number 1 single.
Best Bit-At 1.16.At the height of Tom Jones’ fame his female fans would throw their knickers onto the stage while he performed, nowadays the same fans throw their bloomers.
‘It’s Not Unusual’ was written by Les Reed OBE(1935-2019) and Gordon Mills(1935-1986.) The song had been intended for Sandie Shaw, but after hearing a then unknown Tom Jones’ demo of the song Shaw recommended that Jones release it himself.Among the session musicians who played on the track was a 17 year old called Reginald Dwight(Elton John) who played keyboards.
Les Reed was a prolific songwriter who wrote or co-wrote sixty hit singles including ‘Delilah,’ ‘The Last Waltz’ and the Leeds United football club anthem ‘Marching On Together,’ which has been a top single in 1972 and 2010.The songs other co-writer Gordon Mills was also Tom Jones'(see also best songs 964) manager as well as Englebert Humperdinck and Gilbert O’Sullivan,Mills was the one who gave them all their stage names.
‘Love will never do what you want it to,why can’t this crazy love be mine.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
130-Al Stewart-Year Of The Cat.
1976-Number 31 single.
Best Bit-At 5.33.From my interpretation of the songs lyrics it should be ‘Year Of The Fox-y Lady.’
‘Year Of The Cat’ was written by Al Stewart, but songwriting credits are also given to English keyboard player Peter Wood(1950-1993) who had been a member of Scottish Rock group Quiver(see also best songs 697.) Stewart recalled that he was opening for Linda Ronstadt during a 1975 tour of the United States when he heard Peter Wood using a catchy chord progression during soundchecks,Stewart incorporated the notes into the melodic line of ‘Year Of The Cat.’
Al Stewart has explained the songs meaning.’It’s about a business man who is extremely busy flying to a destination in the far east when his plane has an unscheduled stop.He leaves the plane along with other passengers. He succumbs to this beautiful woman,he stays the night with her and by the time he wakes he realises the plane has gone and will not be back for some considerable time. His life has changed,it’s not a decision he would have planned but it’s a good turn in his life events, that time coinciding with the year of the cat.’
The cat is one of the twelve signs of the Vietnamese zodiac,it corresponds to that of the Rabbit in the Chinese zodiac.
‘She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running like a watercolour in the rain.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
131-Lou Reed-Perfect Day.
1972-Has never charted in the UK,but was officially released as a double ‘A’ side with ‘Walk on the Wild Side’ which peaked at Number 10.
Best Bit-At 2.48.This is highly addictive,a few plays and you will be hooked.
Well what is this song really about, some say it is about Heroin and some think it’s just Lou Reed enjoying a good day out.The drug interpretation according to the songs author Lou Reed himself is ‘laughable.’In an interview in 2000 Reed said,’Your talking to the writer, the person who wrote it.No that’s not true(that the song is about Heroin use.) I don’t object to that, particularly…whatever you think is perfect, but this guy’s vision of a perfect day was the girl, sangria in the park and then you go home, real simple.I meant just what I said.’
In 1996 the song was brought to the attention of a whole new generation when featuring in the film ‘Trainspotting,’ which is a film about Heroin abuse.
In 1997 the song was re-recorded by Lou Reed(see also best songs 401 and 165) with many artists from the world of entertainment singing sections of the song separately as an advertisement to promote the diverse musical output provided by the ‘BBC,’ The song proved so popular that it was released for ‘Children in Need,’spending three weeks at Number 1 and raising over £2 million for charity.
The original version of the song from 1972 was produced by David Bowie(see also best songs 807-440-334-302-209 and 186) and Mick Ronson,as was it’s parent Album,’Transformer,’
‘Just a perfect day,you made me forget myself.I thought I was someone else, someone good.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
132-Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto and Astrud Gilberto-The Girl from Ipanema.
1963-Has never charted in the UK,but an edited version just featuring the vocals of Astrud Gilberto reached Number 29 in 1964.
Best Bit-At 2.36.The songs writers got their inspiration for the song from watching bikini clad girls walking along Ipanema beach in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, they must have had very understanding wives.
‘The Girl from Ipanema’ was written by Antonio Carlos Jobim(1927-1994,) with lyrics by Vinicius de Moraes(1913-1980,) the English lyrics were written by Norman Gimbel(1927-2018.) The song was inspired by Heloisa Pinto a seventeen year old girl living in Ipanema. Daily she would walk past the Veloso cafe bar, someday’s stopping to buy cigarettes for her mother and leaving to the sound of wolf whistles. In the winter of 1962 the composers saw the girl pass by the bar, since the song became popular she has become a celebrity.
After the Beatles song ‘Yesterday,'(see also best songs 319)’The Girl from Ipanema’ is the worlds most recorded pop song.
‘Tall and tan and young and lovely the girl from Ipanema goes walking.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
133-The Doors-Riders on the Storm.
1971-Number 22 single.
Best Bit-At.2.41.I believe that an artist records all their best work early on in their careers, but like every good rule there are always exceptions. This was the last song that Jim Morrison recorded before his death.
Jim Morrison(see also best songs 460 and 235) (December 8,1943-July 3,1971) put many of his short life’s inspirations into this song. For example some of the lyrics relate to mass murderer Billy Cook who was executed in 1952,while other lyrics echo the American poet Hart Crane’s poem,’Praise for an Urn,’which includes the line ‘Delicate riders of the storm.’Another inspiration was the 1948 Stan Jones song ‘(Ghost) Riders in the Sky,’made popular when recorded by Johnny Cash.
My interpretation of the song is that we are born into a world where we have to make the most of every opportunity, but along the way there are many dangers, but if we work together we can win out in the end.
‘Girl you gotta love your man, take him by the hand, make him understand.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
134-Depeche Mode-Blasphemous Rumours.
1984-Number 16 single.
Best Bit-At 1.44.Those with faith will accept any situation that occurs and still believe.
The song tells of a 16-year old girl who attempts suicide but fails, over the course of the next two years she turns to God but is killed in a car accident at the age of 18.
In the UK the song was considered too anti-religious to be broadcast during the daytime by the BBC and other organisations.Because of the controversy surrounding the song Depeche Mode released the track ‘Somebody’ making the release a ‘double-A-side.’
Depeche Mode(see also best songs 968 and 261) singer Dave Gahan explained.’I’m by the way not anti-religious at all,I only appose a certain kind of religion that was forced upon me when I was young. The song only wants to say that no one should let someone force anything upon him.You have to choose yourself what you wanna do with your life.’
‘I don’t want to start any blasphemous rumours but I think that God’s got a sick sense of humour and when I die I expect to find him laughing.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
135-Led Zeppelin-Whole Lotta Love.
1969-Was not released as a single in the UK until 1997 when it reached Number 21.
Best Bit-At 0.01.A cover version by the band C.C.S.was used for many years for the opening titles to play over the top 40 singles chart rundown for Top of the Pops, which is ironic because Led Zeppelin never released singles in the UK.
A lot of music critics cite this song as the start of ‘Heavy Metal’ music, influencing bands such as Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, some have said that Led Zeppelin were as important to the 1970’s as the Beatles were to the 1960’s.
‘Whole Lotta Love’ started out as a guitar riff written by Jimmy Page and developed by the other band members Robert Plant,John Bonham and John Paul Jones.Lead singer Robert Plant provided the lyrics which were contested in a court case in 1985 by Blues artist Willie Dixon who claimed that parts of his song ‘You Need Love’ recorded by Muddy Waters in 1962 had been used without his consent,Dixon won the case receiving back dated royalties and his name was added to the songs writing credits.
‘You need cooling, baby I’m not fooling,I’m gonna send ya back to schooling.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
136-Lonnie Donegan-Cumberland Gap.
1957-Number 1 single.
Best Bit-At 1.12.Previous versions of the song probably didn’t include the lyrics,’Two old ladies sitting in the sand, each one wishing the other was a man.’
Cumberland Gap is a traditional folk song originating from the Eastern United States and dating back to the latter half of the 19th Century. The songs title refers to the Cumberland Gap,a mountain pass in the Appalachian Mountains at the juncture of the States of Tennessee,Virginia and Kentucky.
The first recording of the song was in 1924 from the American ‘Old Time’ fiddle player Ambrose Gaines ‘Unkle Am’ Stuart.Other notable recordings are from Woodie Guthrie from the mid 1940’s and a live version performed by Earl Scruggs at the Newport Folk Festival in 1959.
In 1957 Lonnie Donegan,MBE(1931-2002) (see also best songs 484) took his Skiffle version to Number 1 in the UK for five weeks.
Before the Beatles,Donegan was Britain’s most successful and influential artist. Paul McCartney said,’We all bought guitars to be in a Skiffle group.he was the man.’Brian May said,’He really was the cornerstone of English Blues and Rock.’Roger Daltrey said,’The man who really made me feel like I could actually go out and do it was a chap by the name of Lonnie Donegan.’
‘Well the Cumberland Gap ain’t nowhere, fifteen miles from Middlesborough.’
