Like a can of beer that’s sweeter than honey
Like a millionaire that has no money

Like a gambling fiend that does not bet
Like Dracula without his fangs
Like the boogie to the boogie without the boogie bang
Like collard greens that don’t taste good
Like a tree that’s not made out of wood
Like going up and not coming down
Is just like the beat without the sound.

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
361-The Yardbirds-Shapes Of Things.
1966-Number 3 single.
Best Bit-At 1.35.The beginnings of what was to become known as ‘Psychedelic Rock’ music.
Psychedelic rock is intended to replicate and enhance the mind altering experiences of psychedelic drugs, most notably LSD.
Psychedelic rock is made by artists experimenting with musical instruments and elaborate studio effects. For example electric guitars used with feedback, or the recording of music, then slowing it down or adding echo are just a couple of examples.
This song features Jeff Beck’s musical use of feedback.Music critics have called his work groundbreaking and cited it’s influence on Paul McCartney and Jimi Hendrix.
In 1968 Jeff Beck re-recorded this song with his new band ‘The Jeff Beck Group.’Lead vocalist Rod Stewart suggested they ‘Slow it down and make it dirty and evil,’that version is now recognised as an early example of what was to become ‘Heavy Metal.’
‘Soon I hope that I will find thoughts deep within my mind that won’t disgrace my kind.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
362-Jerry Lee Lewis-High School Confidential.
1958-Number 12 single.
Best Bit-At 1.07.It’s ironic that at the time he recorded this song he had just married his 13 year old first cousin once removed.
High School Confidential was co-written by Lewis and Ron Hargrave for the 1958 MGM movie of the same name directed by Jack Arnold. The song also appeared on Lewis’s debut Album called ‘Jerry Lee Lewis’ on the legendary ‘Sun’ record label and produced by Sam Phillips, strangely though Lewis’s big hits ‘Great Balls Of Fire’ and ‘Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On'(see best songs 678) were omitted.
In 1958 at the height of Lewis’s fame his career was badly affected when it came to light that he had married his 13 year old cousin, this caused public uproar with tours being cancelled and radio stations refusing to play his records.
‘Open up a honey it’s your lover boy me that’s a knockin,’ why don’t you listen to me sugar all the cats are at the high school rockin.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
365-Diana Ross-I’m Still Waiting.
1971-Number 1 single.
Best Bit-At 0.45.I suppose the moral of the song is,if you are a five year old girl don’t fall for a ten year old boy who jilts you because it will mess the rest of your life up.
I’m Still Waiting was never going to be released as a single until BBC Radio 1 disc jockey Tony Blackburn told Motown records that if they released it as a single he would make it his record of the week and play it on his show every morning for five days. The song went on to spend four weeks at Number 1 and become Motown’s best selling UK single until The Commodore’s Three Times A Lady in 1978.
The song was written and produced by Deke Richards who in the 1960’s was one of the songwriters for Diana Ross and The Supremes(see also best songs 900-519 and 411,) co-writing their Billboard Number 1 ‘Love Child.’

‘Until You Come Back To Me’ was originally recorded in 1967 by Stevie Wonder, but his version was not released as a single and did not appear on an Album until 1977’s anthology ‘Looking Back.’
The song was co-written by sixteen year old Stevie Wonder(see also best songs 920-843-570 and 682) along with Tamla Motown staff songwriters Morris Broadnax and Clarence Paul. This is the definitive version from the late Aretha Franklin who died in 2018(see also best songs 644.)

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
368-Delerium featuring Sarah McLachlan-Silence.
2000-Number 3 single.
Best Bit-At 4.21.Silence Is Golden.
Delerium are a Canadian Ambient Electronic musical duo that formed in 1987.They have traditionally been a two person project, but the only constant member has been Bill Leeb working with either Rhys Fulber,Chris Peterson or Michael Balch.
Silence was first recorded in 1997 in a much slower Ambient tempo for their Album ‘Karma,’When producers such as Airscape and Tiesto remixed the song as an uptempo vocal Trance recording it generated interest in the clubs and then gained airplay. The vocals on the track are provided by fellow Canadian Sarah McLachan.
I have chosen the Airscape mix but I feel the Tiesto version is of equal standing.
‘Heaven holds a sense of wonder and I wanted to believe.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
369-The Hollies-The Air That I Breathe.
1974-Number 2 single.
Best Bit-At 1.43.No other intro to no other song sounds anything like this.Nothing ‘Creep-y’about it at all.
The Air That I Breathe was co-written by Albert Hammond and Mike Hazlewood and originally recorded for Hammond’s 1972 Album ‘It Never Rains In Southern California.’
Albert Hammond is a prolific songwriter,he is the co-author of four UK Number 1 singles.’When I Need You'(Leo Sayer,) ‘Don’t Turn Around'(Aswad,) ‘One Moment In Time'(Whitney Houston) and ‘Nothings Gonna Stop Us Now'(Starship.)
The Hollies were formed in 1962 by Allan Clarke and Graham Nash.In the UK they have achieved 29 top 40 singles and 22 on Billboard, with differing lineups, they remain active to this present day.
The 1992 Radiohead song ‘Creep’ uses a similar chord progression and shares some melodic content with this song.As a result the song’s publisher sued Radiohead for copyright infringement and a settlement was reached in which Hammond and Hazlewood were given co-writing credits as well as a portion of the songs royalties.
‘If I could make a wish I think I’d pass, can’t think of anything I need.’
