THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
379-Slipknot-Psychosocial.
2008-Number 67 single.
Best Bit-At 0.24.Frank Sinatra once said ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll is the most brutal, ugly, desperate, vicious form of expression it has been my misfortune to hear.’I wonder what he would have made of Alternative Metal?
Slipknot are a Heavy Metal band from Des Moines,Iowa. They have been active since 1995 going through many different band member changes. The only founding member in the current line up is Shawn Crahan.
The band are known for their energetic and chaotic live shows, which have included headbanging, stage diving and fighting each other. The band also perform wearing unique individual face masks and matching uniforms, normally jumpsuits.
‘Psychosocial’ is open to interpretation but is probably an anti war song.It also warns us not to be so materialistic and if we don’t look out for each other, one day we will all face the terrible consequences.
‘Go drill your deserts go dig your graves then fill your mouth with all the money you will save.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
381-Bo Diddley-Bo Diddley.
1955-Has never charted in the UK.
Best Bit-At 1.07.If songs were just evaluated on their influence on future generations then this would be in the top 20.
The song is rhythmically similar to the African/American style of dance known as the ‘Juba Dance,’or ‘Hambone.’It involves stomping as well as slapping and patting arms, legs, chest and cheeks,it was originally brought over by Kongo slaves to Charleston,South Carolina.
This combination of African rhythms and Rock ‘N’ Roll was a true innovation and is often called ‘A Bo Diddley Beat.’The Bo Diddley ‘riff” can be heard in such songs as ‘Not Fade Away'(Buddy Holly) ‘Willie And The Hand Jive'(Johnny Otis Show) and ‘Faith'(George Michael.)
Bo Diddley was born Ellas McDaniel, December 30,1928 and died June 2,2008,he played a key role in the transformation from the ‘Blues’ to ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll.’He influenced many artists including The Beatles,The Rolling Stones and Elvis Presley.
‘Bo Diddley bought his babe a diamond ring,if that diamond ring don’t shine he going to take it to a private eye.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
384-Cat Stevens-Matthew and Son.
1967-Number 2 single.
Best Bit-At 2.24.A lot of people have said that the songs verse sounds similar to the Tears For Fears 1982 song Mad World.Cat Stevens made a reference to this at a concert in 2016 while playing Matthew and Son,inserting the lyrics,’I think it’s kind of funny,I think it’s kind of strange, yes I think it’s kind of funny, that this sounds the same!’
According to Stevens the song took it’s name from Henry Matthews whom Stevens had bought a suit from.Stevens also commented ‘I had a girlfriend and she was working for this big firm and I didn’t like the way that she had to spend so much of her time working.’
Cat Stevens was born Steven Georgiou, his stage name Cat came from a girlfriend who said he had eyes like a cat.In December 1977 Stevens converted to Islam and adopted the name Yusuf Islam, leaving his musical career in order to devote himself to causes in the Muslim community. He returned to Pop Music in 2006 releasing his first Album in 26 years entitled ‘An Other Cup.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
385-Fred Astaire with Johnny Green and his Orchestra-Let’s Face The Music And Dance.
1936-Has never charted. There was no UK chart until 1952.
Best Bit-At 0.42.Fred Astaire died of pneumonia on June 22,1987 at the age of 88.Shortly before his death Astaire said,’I didn’t want to leave this world without knowing who my descendant was, thank you Michael,’referring to Michael Jackson.
‘Let’s Face The Music And Dance’ is another Irving Berlin classic,(see also best songs 457 and 731) it was written for the 1936 film ‘Follow The Fleet’ starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. The song has been covered many times down the years with perhaps the most well known version being the 1964 recording by Nat King Cole.
The songs message is to enjoy yourself while you can because trouble could be just around the corner, very apt as it was written in 1936.

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
386-T.Rex-Get It On.
1971-Number 1 single.
Best Bit-At 3.27. Can you name another song that is known by a different title in a different country.
When this song was released in America it was re-titled ‘Bang A Gong’ as to avoid confusion with a current hit called ‘Get It On’ from American Rock group Chase.
‘Get It On'(see also best songs 790) is probably a song about sex but can also be interpreted about being about drugs.Bang the gong is slang for snorting coke and in the mid 1850’s it meant asking for Opium.
‘Get It On’ has many talented musicians playing on it.Rick Wakeman plays the piano, the saxophone is played by Ian McDonald of King Crimson and Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan of The Turtles sing backing vocals. The song was produced by legendary music producer Tony Visconti.
In 1980 Sheena Easton’s hit ‘9 To 5’ became ‘Morning Train’ for American audiences and in 1967 The Monkees song ‘Alternate Title’ was not released under it’s real title so as not to upset English audiences, especially those from Liverpool.
‘Well you’re built like a car you’ve got a hubcap diamond star halo.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
387-The Housemartins-Happy Hour.
1986-Number 3 single.
Best Bit-At 2.16.Replace the vocals of Paul Heaton for those of Morrissey and it wouldn’t be quite as happier hour.
The Housemartins were compared by many to The Smiths, however The Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr was not impressed. He complained that ‘Happy Hour was a complete rip off of ‘I Want The One I Cant Have,’and they’ve nicked others too.’…
The song is a humorous but scathing look at life in the working man’s world, which involved most evenings down the local pub.A ‘Happy Hour’ is a promotional tool used by public houses when they discount their prices.
The memorable video for the song was set in a pub featuring animated Plasticine figures of band members. It was filmed in The Star Public House in St. Johns Wood,London.
‘And they’re happy it’s a lovely place to be,happy that the fire is real the barman is a she.’
