Best Bit-At 1.59.As I have said many times before and surely will again,nothing in Pop music is totally original,but when you can cherry pick from the past and add your own new ideas and come up with something so good,how can anyone complain.
Last Nite was written and sung by The Strokes co-founder Julian Casablancas.The songs opening guitar riff is similar to that of the Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers song American Girl.Petty found it refreshing when The Strokes openly admitted to using it.He invited them to be the opening act on many of his 2006 tour dates.
The song is about a guy who leaves his girlfriend after she tells him she feels upset because he doesn’t care about her.he then starts to question his decision.

1982-Not released as a single until the 1990 remix reached Number 14.
Best Bit-At 0.24.Alison Moyet isn’t famous for her joviality but her laughter taken from this song and sampled on the ‘Macarena’ helped it become the biggest selling song in the world in 1996.
Vince Clarke left Depeche Mode after writing one Album and three hit singles to start his next project with ex Punk Rock singer Genevieve Alison Jane Moyet.Together they recorded two Albums and had four top twenty singles.
Moyet went on to have a very successful solo career and Clarke formed his next short lived band ‘The Assembly’ before going on to be half of Erasure with Andy Bell(see best songs 700.)
As for what the lyrics to ‘Situation’ mean,-I haven’t got a clue.

452-Marianne Faithfull-As Tears Go By.
1964-Number 9 single.
Best Bit-At 0.16.The first classic song jointly written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.
Up until they wrote this song the Rolling Stones(see also best songs 933 and 662) were mainly a band who covered Blues standards,but their manager Andrew Loog Oldham seeing the potential in them urged them to come up with something original.
Initially Jagger and Richards thought what they had written did not fit in with the ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll’ image the band was trying to portray,therefore the song was given to fellow label mate Marianne Faithfull who was also Jagger’s girlfriend at the time.
The Rolling Stones recorded the song themselves in 1965 for there Album ‘December’s Children(and Everybody’s.’) In the UK it was released as the ‘B’ side of their single ‘Nineteenth Nervous Breakdown,’while in North America it was given an ‘A’ side release and reached Number 6 on Billboard and Number 1 in Canada.

453-Limmie and Family Cookin’-You Can Do Magic.
1973-Number 3 single.
Best Bit-At 2.10.Some kids collected toy cars,some collected Barbie Dolls,I collected every 7inch single on the ‘AVCO’ record label…..probably a bit sad.
Limmie Snell(1945-1986) was a recording artist with Columbia records from the age of 11.In 1965 he recorded the original version of ‘Good Lovin” without success,a cover version by The Young Rascals went on to become a Billboard Number 1 in 1966.
Snell later formed Limmie and Family Cookin’ with two of his sisters,Martha and Jimmie.Together they achieved three top 40 UK singles,the other two were ‘Dreamboat’ reaching Number 31 and ‘A Walkin’ Miracle’ peaking at Number 6.

454-Baauer-Harlem Shake.
2013-Number 3 single.
Best Bit-At 0.50.The song is called Harlem Shake,but has nothing to do with the original Harlem Shake dance moves.
The original Harlem Shake is a style of Hip-Hop dance and is characterised by jerky arm and shoulder movements in time to the music.The dance was created by Al B a resident of Harlem in 1981.
In 2012 New York music producer Harry Bauer Rodrigues put together this mainly instrumental song,in order for it to stand out he added a variety of peculiar sounds including a lions roar,some music critics viewed it as a novelty song.
It wasn’t until 2013 that the song took off helped by people posting their own dance moves to the song on platforms such as ‘You Tube.’Due to streaming recently at that time being introduced to the Billboard Hot 100 the amount of views the song was receiving helped it to stay at Number 1 for five consecutive weeks.

455-Band Aid-Do They Know It’s Christmas.
1984-Number 1 single.
Best Bit-At 2.47.It seems awful to pick faults in such a good cause,but whose idea was it to get Bono to sing ‘Well tonight thank God it’s them instead of you.’
Bob Geldof who was lead singer of The Boomtown Rats(see also best songs 632) got the idea after watching a BBC documentary on famine in Ethiopia. Geldof wrote the lyrics and his long time friend Midge Ure of the band Ultravox(see also best songs 532) wrote the music.
Most of the song was recorded over a 24 hour period on Sunday November 25,1984 after Geldof had been in touch with all of the biggest Pop stars of the day,nearly all accepted with only three according to Geldof saying no.
The single raised in excess of $14million for famine relief in Africa. Geldof is Irish so he cannot be knighted,but he did receive a KBE which is the equivalent and the reason he is affectionately known as Sir Bob.

Best Bit-At 3.39.The lyrics are about a boy who finds out his father is actually his stepfather and his real father is dead and to top it all off his actual mother ‘comes on to him,’-and you thought you were having a bad day!
The music was written by Stone Gossard the bands bass player and the lyrics by vocalist Eddie Vedder. The first verse about the boy finding out about his father is drawn from Vedder’s real life experiences,but the second verse about incest is pure fantasy.
The extended guitar solo at 3.39 is ranked among the very best according to many critics,(‘Guitar World’ and ‘Total Guitar.’) it is played by the bands lead guitarist Mike McCready.
