The 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
455-Band Aid-Do They Know It’s Christmas.
1984-Number 1 single.
Best Bit-At 2.47.It seems awful to pick faults in such a good cause, but whose idea was it to get Bono to sing ‘Well tonight thank God it’s them instead of you.’
Bob Geldof who was lead singer of The Boomtown Rats(see also best songs 632) got the idea after watching a BBC documentary on famine in Ethiopia. Geldof wrote the lyrics and his long time friend Midge Ure of the band Ultravox(see also best songs 532) wrote the music.
Most of the song was recorded over a 24 hour period on Sunday November 25,1984 after Geldof had been in touch with all of the biggest Pop stars of the day, nearly all accepted with only three according to Geldof saying no.
The single raised in excess of $14million for famine relief in Africa. Geldof is Irish so he cannot be knighted, but he did receive a KBE which is the equivalent and the reason he is affectionately known as Sir Bob.
‘Here’s to them underneath that burning sun.’
