Up until they wrote this song the Rolling Stones(see also best songs 933 and 662) were mainly a band who covered Blues standards,but their manager Andrew Loog Oldham seeing the potential in them urged them to come up with something original.
Initially Jagger and Richards thought what they had written did not fit in with the ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll’ image the band was trying to portray,therefore the song was given to fellow label mate Marianne Faithfull who was also Jagger’s girlfriend at the time.
The Rolling Stones recorded the song themselves in 1965 for there Album ‘December’s Children(and Everybody’s.’) In the UK it was released as the ‘B’ side of their single ‘Nineteenth Nervous Breakdown,’while in North America it was given an ‘A’ side release and reached Number 6 on Billboard and Number 1 in Canada.
