Best Bit-At 4.38.The song is about someone who has lost all four limbs,is blind and unable to speak and is in constant pain…but apart from that,mustn’t grumble.
‘One’ is an anti-war song,it was written by Metallica band members James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich(see also best songs 730.) A soldier in World War 1 is severely wounded when a landmine blow his arms and legs off,he is also blinded and left unable to speak.Lying in a hospital bed his only way of communicating is by jolting,he spells ‘kill me’ in Morse code.
The lyrics are based on the 1939 novel ‘Johnny Got His Gun’ by Dalton Trumbo which is about World War 1.In 1971 it was made in to a movie,this songs video uses images and monologues from the film.Metallica had to pay royalties for using the movie clips which were proving to be very expensive,so instead of pulling the video or continuing to pay,when it came to re-negotiate the license they bought the rights to it which have now been made available on DVD.
The song starts with battle themed sound effects including an artillery barrage and a helicopter flying during a confrontation in World War 1, but this must be put down to artistic licence as helicopters were not invented until 1936.

In Pop Music the mishearing of lyrics is very commonplace.What is actually being sung is ‘Hey girl,’B’ boy,’a b-boy is someone who does breakdancing which is an athletic style of ‘Street Dance’ which originated outside of dance studios in any available open spaces such as parks and schoolyards,breakdancing originated in the early 1970’s in New York City.
The vocal sample ‘Hey girls b boys superstar DJ’s here we go is taken from the 1984 Old School Hip Hop song ‘The Roof Is on Fire’ from Rock Master Scott & the Dynamic Three.The song also samples the track ‘I Sit on Acid’ from ‘Lords of Acid.’That bands founding member ‘Praga Khan’ confronted The Chemical Brothers over the drum programming used in ‘Hey Boy Hey Girl’ which he claimed was identical to ‘I Sit on Acid.’The Chemical Brothers response was,’Everyone steals from everyone.’
The Chemical Brothers(see also best songs 300) are Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons they formed in 1989 in Manchester,England.To date they have achieved two UK Number 1 singles and six UK Number 1 Albums.Their latest Album release ‘No Geography’ in 2019 met with unanimous critical acclaim.

Sinead O’Connor has said,’I did meet him(Prince) a couple of times.We didn’t get on at all,in fact we had a punch up.He summoned me to his house and it’s foolish to do this to an Irish woman,he said he didn’t like me saying bad words in interviews,so I told him to f… off.He got quite violent.I had to escape out of his house,he packed a bigger punch than me.’
By the mid 1980’s Prince(see also best songs 884-487 and 85) was wanting to release more music than his record label would let him,so to get around this he created a new band called ‘The Family,’this song first appeared as an Album track on The Family’s self titled debut from 1985.
The songs video is one of the most recognisable in Pop Music.Towards the end of the song two tears roll down O’Connor’s face.She said the tears were real,she did not intend to cry but then thought,’I should let this happen,’she explained that the tears were triggered by thoughts of her mother who died in a car accident in 1985.

System of a Down are a Heavy Metal group formed in 1994 in Glendale,California by lead vocalist Sej Tankian who was born in Beirut,he is a songwriter and the bands lead vocalist. Daron Malakian was born in Hollywood,California he is also a songwriter for the group and guitarist.The other founding member is Shavarsh Odadjian,who was born in Yerevan,Armenian SSR,Soviet Union,he also is a writer for the group and a multi instrumentalist.Andy Khachaturian,the bands drummer was a member until leaving in 1997 and was replaced by John Dolmayan. They have released five studio Albums,three of which debuted at Number 1 on Billboard,although they are still officially together they have not released any new music since 2005.
‘Chop Suey’ is taken from the bands second Album ‘Toxicity’ released in 2001.The songs co-writer Daron Malakian explained,’The song is about how we are regarded differently depending on how we pass.If I were to die from drug abuse,they might say I deserved it because I abused dangerous drugs,hence the line,I cry when angels deserve to die.’The lyrics,’Father,into your hands I commend my spirit,’ and ‘Why have you forsaken me,’ are a reference to Jesus’ death on the cross,as according to the Gospels,it was one of the seven things Jesus said while he was dying.

‘No Woman,No Cry’ first appeared as the original studio version on Bob Marley’s 1974 Album ‘Natty Dread,’it was just over three and a half minutes in length.In 1975 Marley went out on tour to promote the Album,it was promoted as the ‘Natty Dread Tour.’The tour dates took place in America,Canada and England which included two dates at the ‘Lyceum Theatre in London.On July 17th 1975 the Lyceum concert was recorded for a future Album release.The Album was called ‘Live’ and this song was released as a single in all of it’s original seven minute performance.The live version was also included on Marley’s greatest hits Album,’Legend’ released in 1984(see also best songs 618,)’Legend’ has sold over 28 million copies worldwide making it the best selling Reggae Album of all time.
‘No Woman,No Cry’ is actually pronounced ‘no woman ‘nuh’ cry,’ in ‘Jamaican Patois,’the ‘nuh’ actually means don’t.In the song the narrator is telling his woman not to cry and not to worry because he has to go,but things will turn out fine in the end.

Best Bit-At 2.38.Back in the 60’s and 70’s many of the biggest names didn’t add singles to their Album releases,the Beatles and The Stones were just two,Led Zeppelin wouldn’t even release them.
In June 1972 Roxy Music(see also best songs 721 and 316) had just released their self titled debut Album and it was proving to be very popular.In order to continue the momentum their record label ‘Island’ insisted on a song with a more radio friendly sound to continue the interest.
Before moving in to music,in the 1960’s Bryan Ferry had been an art student,he took the title ‘Virginia Plain’ from one of his own paintings featuring an image of a cigarette packet in the same style as that of artist Andy Warhol,Virginia Plain is a variety of tobacco.
Ferry said,’It was a watercolour or a painting on paper.It was just like a surreal drawing of a giant cigarette packet with a pin-up girl on it.I liked the phrase Virginia Plain,so it later became the title of the first single I put out with Roxy Music,with a slightly imponderable lyric.’
The songs first verse mentions Robert E.Lee he was Roxy Music’s lawyer.Ferry is telling him not to mess things up as it has taken them many years to get to where they are now.Also name checked is the American actress Jane Holzer who appeared in three Andy Warhol films in the 1960’s.
Virginia Plain first appeared on a Roxy Music Album when included on their greatest hits in 1977.

‘Walk on the Wild Side’ was released as a double ‘A’ sided single in 1972,it was backed with ‘Perfect Day'(see also best songs 131,) both songs were produced by David Bowie and arranged by Mick Ronson.
The song is about the people who worked for the American artist,director and producer Andy Warhol(1928-1987) in the 1960’s and early 1970’s they were referred to as ‘superstars,’ and were well known to Lou Reed(see also best songs 401-165 and 131.)
‘Holly is based on Holly Woodlawn(1946-2015,) a transsexual actress,’Candy’ was Candy Darling(1944-1974,) also a transsexual actress.’Little Joe’ was the nickname of Joe Dallesandro an actor who claims to have not met Reed when the song was written.’Sugar Plum Fairy’ was a reference to actor Joe Campell who played a character by that name in Warhol’s 1965 film ‘The Hustler,’the term was a euphemism for ‘drug dealer’ and finally ‘Jackie’ is based on Jackie Curtis(1947-1985) another Warhol actress who at one time hoped to play the role of James Dean in a movie.
There are many songs in this countdown that were banned from being played on the radio and television,often for very little reason,but amazingly this song received wide radio coverage despite touching on taboo topics such as transsexual people,drugs,male prostitution and oral sex.

Many of Weller’s songs reflected his anger with the politics of the time(see also best songs 670 and 94,)so what was his reaction when Conservative party prime minister David Cameron said he had attended Jam gigs in the 1980’s,and that ‘The music of the Jam meant a lot.’Weller said,’I’d have been really,really surprised.I think I pretty much nailed where I was to the mast,but people come to gigs for different reasons,it isn’t necessarily about what the person on the stage is singing,but at the same time you do think,well maybe this’ll change their minds.’
The songs title is a play on words of the 1950 Nevil Shute novel ‘A Town Like Alice,’but the song has nothing to do with the book,in fact Weller has said he hadn’t read the novel when he wrote this song.The song is about unemployment in a working town,Weller said,’It could have been written about any suburban town,but in fact it is written about my hometown of Woking.’
The song is in fact a double ‘A’-side with ‘Precious.’The Jam became the first act since the Beatles(‘Day Tripper’ and ‘We Can Work It Out’) to perform both tracks on the BBC Pop music programme ‘Top Of The Pops.’
I don’t want to start any legal disputes,but take a listen to the 1966 Tamla Motown song from Martha Reeves and the Vandellas called ‘I’m Ready For Love’…..it’s got a lovely bass guitar intro.

Best Bit-At 1.53.According to former Liverpool captain Tommy Smith,Gerry Marsden gave Bill Shankly a recording of this song which was to be their next single,Shankly was very impressed,he said,’Gerry my son,I have given you a football team and you have given us a song.’
‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ started out life as a show tune from the 1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein(see also best songs 842 and 82) musical Carousel,it was sung by Christine Johnson playing the role of Nettie Fowler,later in the show it was reprised by Jan Clayton in the role of Julie Jordan.
In 1963 at Anfield the home of Liverpool Football Club the Disc Jockey would play the current top ten singles before home games,after a while some of the crowd would sing along to this song.As the weeks went by more would join in and even after the song dropped out of the top ten it would still be requested.
Gerry and the Pacemakers formed in 1959 in Liverpool,England they were active between 1959-1966,Marsden reformed the band again in 1972 touring until he announced his retirement in 2018.In 1985 following the Bradford City stadium fire in which 56 people died Gerry Marsdon sang lead vocals on a re-make of this song with all profits going to charity. Marsden was joined by many musicians and celebrities of the day playing as ‘The Crowd.’
