1963-Number 1 single.
Best Bit-At 1.53.According to former Liverpool captain Tommy Smith,Gerry Marsden gave Bill Shankly a recording of this song which was to be their next single,Shankly was very impressed,he said,’Gerry my son,I have given you a football team and you have given us a song.’
‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ started out life as a show tune from the 1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein(see also best songs 842 and 82) musical Carousel,it was sung by Christine Johnson playing the role of Nettie Fowler,later in the show it was reprised by Jan Clayton in the role of Julie Jordan.
In 1963 at Anfield the home of Liverpool Football Club the Disc Jockey would play the current top ten singles before home games,after a while some of the crowd would sing along to this song.As the weeks went by more would join in and even after the song dropped out of the top ten it would still be requested.
Gerry and the Pacemakers formed in 1959 in Liverpool,England they were active between 1959-1966,Marsden reformed the band again in 1972 touring until he announced his retirement in 2018.In 1985 following the Bradford City stadium fire in which 56 people died Gerry Marsdon sang lead vocals on a re-make of this song with all profits going to charity. Marsden was joined by many musicians and celebrities of the day playing as ‘The Crowd.’
