1030-Little Eva-The Loco-Motion.
1962-Number 2 single,when re-released in 1972, it reached Number 11.
Best Bit-At 1.29. ‘Macarena’,eat your heart out. ‘Cha Cha Slide’,move over. ‘Cotten Eye Joe’,your still wet behind the ears, this is the Daddy of all the party songs with dance moves.
Little Eva Narcissus Boyd was born June 29th,1943, in Belhaven,North Carolina,U.S.,she died from cervical cancer on April 10th,2003 at the age of 59 in Kinston,North Carolina,U.S. She first met Carole King, and Gerry Goffin, this songs co-writers (see also best songs 98 and 1021,) when applying for the job of nanny to their daughter Louise in 1960. Goffin and King had offered the song to Dee Dee Sharp, who was one of the big stars of the day,but she turned it down,Eva Boyd recorded the studio demo, which impressed the producer Don Kirshner so much, that the song was offered to her.As Little Eva she would go on to chart with four singles on the Billboard, and UK charts, between 1962-1963.
The Loco-Motion has been a hit in three separate decades in America,Little Eva took her version to Number 1 in 1962, the Rock group Grand Funk Railroad also hit Number 1 with the song in 1974,and in 1988, Kylie Minogue reached Number 3,her highest ever placing on the Billboard chart.

THE BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.

To compliment my recently completed ‘1000 BEST SONGS LIST,’ here is another that just missed the cut.

1029-Post Malone-Circles.
2019-Number 3 single.
Best Bit-At 1.10.Post Malone has cited the Bob Dylan song Subterranean Homesick Blues as the very first Rap record,I think he makes a very good point (see also best songs 792.)
Austin Richard Post was born 4th July,1995, in Syracuse, New York, U.S. it is rumoured that he took his name from the basketball player Karl Malone, but Post has denied this.
To say Post Malone’s music is eclectic is an understatement, as he records Pop, Hip-Hop, Rock, and Folk music,he states his musical influences as Bob Dylan,Johnny Cash,Kanye West, and 50 Cent.To date he has released three studio Albums, and has achieved four Billboard Number 1 singles.
‘Circles’ is a song about a couple who want to stay together, but their relationship only brings them sorrow. It was co-written by Malone, Billy Walsh, Kaan Gunesberk, and long time collaborator Louis Bell.
‘Seasons change and our love went cold, feed the flame, ’cause we can’t let go.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.

To compliment my recently completed ‘1000 BEST SONGS LIST,’ here is another that just missed the cut.

1028-Geordie-All Because of You.
1973-Number 6 single.
Best Bit-At 0.03.A canny band pet.
Geordie were formed in 1971 in Newcastle, not surprisingly. The original line up was Brian Johnson (lead vocals,) Vic Malcolm (lead guitar,) Tom Hill (bass guitar,) and Brian Gibson (drums.) They were a heavy metal band, with more than just a nod to the Glam Rock genre,in their early days they were compared to Slade, and to some extent, also The Sweet.Their chart success was brief with four top 40 single successes, spanning the years of 1972-1973,with this song providing their only top 10 hit.
The band Geordie may have faded away into Pop musics great history, but their lead singer Brian Johnson would go on to become one of Rocks most revered front men, as lead singer with the legendary AC/DC (see also best songs 797-245 and 170.) When Bon Scott died in 1980, AC/DC auditioned for a new lead singer, Angus Young the bands co-founder remembered how Scott had always admired Brian Johnson.Young recalled what Scott had said,’ He was a great Rock and Roll singer in the style of Little Richard,he’s a guy that knows what Rock and Roll is all about.’
The first Album Johnson recorded as a member of AC/DC was ‘Back in Black’ in 1980,it went on to become the 2nd best selling Album of all time, with sales in excess of 30 million copies.
‘I can remember the day when I had nothing to say, just look at me now I’m shouting,(hey, hey, hey.’)

THE BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.

To compliment my recently completed ‘1000 BEST SONGS LIST,’ here is another that just missed the cut.

1027-The Foundations-Build Me Up Buttercup.
1968-Number 2 single.
Best Bit-At 2.43.Don’t let the songs title fool you, this has nothing to do with ‘Flower Power Music.’
If you are a DJ who caters for weddings, and birthdays you will be well aware what a useful tool this track is for filling a dance floor. It is one of those rare songs that appeals to every generation, those that remember it from their youth, and those that were introduced to it while watching the 1998 film, ‘There’s Something About Mary.’
The Foundations were active between the years of 1967-1970,they were formed in London,England with a diverse line up of West Indians,White British, and Shi Lankan artists. They performed Soul Music, heavily influenced by the Tamla Motown sound.
‘Build Me Up Buttercup’ was co-written by Mike d’Abo, and Tony Macauley, d’Abo was the lead singer of Manfred Mann, his vocals can be heard on their Number 1 single ‘Mighty Quinn,’the other notable song he wrote was ‘Handbags and Gladrags,’ a hit for Chris Farlowe, the Stereophonics, and Rod Stewart.Tony Macauley is a prolific songwriter who to date has co-written six UK Number 1 singles, the other five are ‘Baby Now That I’ve Found You,’ for The Foundations, ‘Love Grows(Where My Rosemary Goes,’) for Edison Lighthouse,’You Wont Find Another Fool Like Me,’ for The New Seekers, ‘Let the Heartaches Begin,’ for Long John Baldry, and ‘Don’t Give Up On Us’ for David Soul.’

THE BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.

To compliment my recently completed ‘1000 BEST SONGS LIST,’ here is another that just missed the cut.

1026-Cyndi Lauper-Girls Just Want to Have Fun.
1984-Number 2 single.
Best Bit-At 0.06.The good news is that girls want to have fun,the bad news is,it’s not with you.
‘Girls Just Want to Have Fun’ was written in 1979 by the American musician Robert Hazard,(1948-2008) it was never officially released, but there is a very good quality demo. The Hazard version is in the style of Punk Rock, and New Wave, and tells the tale of how fortunate it is to be born male, because all the girls want to have fun with you. Lauper re-wrote the lyrics, and made the song a ‘Girl Power’ anthem. She tells us that girls can have fun on their own terms, matching anything a man can do.The song and it’s accompanying video have been described as a ‘Strong feminist statement,’ and a ‘Playful romp, celebrating female camaraderie.’
Cynthia Ann Stephanie Lauper was born in New York City on the 22nd June,1953, to date she has sold in excess of 50 million records worldwide. She was also a fashion trendsetter, wearing bright coloured outrageous clothing, that looked like it had been purchased in a second hand shop, this would influence other female artists such as Madonna, Katy Perry, and Lady Ga Ga.
Finally I would highly recommend checking out Laupers’ amazing performance of this song on the British television programme Top of the Pops, back in 1984.
‘When the working day is done,oh girls they want to have fun.’

1025-Benny Benassi-Satisfaction.
2003-Number 2 single.
Best Bit-At 0.30.The Rolling Stones once complained that they couldn’t get no satisfaction, but they never saw this video.
Marco Benassi was born in Reggio Emilia,Italy, on the 13th July,1967,he started his career in music in 1985, by forming the duo ‘Benassi Bros,’ with his cousin Alle Benassi. During their early days they would write and produce for several different artists, including the Danish singer Whigfield.
In 2002 Benassi released his debut Album,’Hypnotica,’ which included ‘Satisfaction,’the song is recognised as a forerunner of ‘Electro House’ music, bringing the genre into the mainstream, and help pave the way for artists such as Skrillex (see also best songs 753,) and Steve Aoki.
Benny Benassi to date has released four studio Albums, the latest in 2016.Both he and his cousin Alle have also worked closely with R&B singer Chris Brown, notably on the 2011 UK Number 4 hit ‘Beautiful People (see also best songs 785.) ‘But it is his work as a re-mixer, and producer that has brought him the most acclaim, having added his interpretation of a song to the work of artists such as Madonna,Janet Jackson, and Daft Punk.
‘Push me, and then just touch me,till I can get my satisfaction.’

THE BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.

To compliment my recently completed ‘1000 BEST SONGS LIST,’ here is another that just missed the cut.

1024-Kevin Johnson-Rock and Roll (I Gave You the Best Years of My Life.)
1974-Number 23 single.
Best Bit-At 4.01.This could be the theme tune for countless X-Factor wannabees.
Kevin Stephen Johnson was born July 3rd,1942 in Rockhampton,Queensland, Australia, he is best remembered for this song, but also charted in the Australian top 20 in 1971 with ‘Bonnie Please Don’t Go.’Although Johnson did eventually become successful, many still think he has not received the accolades his talent deserves.
This song is one of the most covered songs written by an Australian, with 27 different artists having already covered it by 1975.In America country singer Mac Davis took his version to Number 15, in Holland it was the Dutch Rock band The Cats who had the hit version, and in France, singer Joe Dassin scored with his French language rendition.
Johnson has stated that the song is semi-autobiographical.The lyrics describe a musician recalling his childhood dreams of being a star, and follow his life through his musical work.Johnson said, ‘I decided to write a song not about giving someone the best years of my life, but to write about the pursuit of success, which I thought related to a lot of people around the world, not just in music, but anything.’
‘And she followed me when, finally,I sold my old guitar, and she tried to help me understand, I’d never be a star.’

THE BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.

To compliment my recently completed ‘1000 BEST SONGS LIST,’ here is another that just missed the cut.

1023-Vaughn Monroe-Mister Sandman.
1954-Has never been released as a single in the UK.
Best Bit-At 0.47.When choosing which version to post,It was a toss up between the wonderful melodic vocal sparing harmonies of The Chordettes, or the big band sounds of Vaughn Monroe, with his Orchestra,in the end I remembered that ‘It don’t mean a thing,if it ain’t got that swing.’
‘Mr Sandman'(sometimes Mister Sandman) was written by the American songwriter Pat Ballard,he was born Francis Drake Ballard in Troy,Pennsylvania,on June 19,1899,he died of a cardiac arrest in New York, on October 26.1960,his other best known song is ‘Oh Baby Mine,’ a 1954 hit for The Four Knights, which has sold in excess of one million copies.
The first recording of Mister Sandman was this one by Vaughn Monroe,it was released a the ‘B’ side of his 1954 single ‘I Don’t Wanna See You Cryin.”
Back in the 1950’s it was not unusual for the best songs of the day to have multiple recordings, and the most successful version of this song was by the American all female quartet The Chordettes, who spent seven weeks at Number 1, on Billboard during 1954.
Incidentally just in case you wanted to know, the ‘Sandman’ is a mythical character in Western, and Northern European folklore, who puts people to sleep, and encourages, and inspires beautiful dreams, by sprinkling magical sand onto their eyes. Two other very famous songs that are the subject of the Sandman are, Enter Sandman by Metallica (see also best songs 730,) and In Dreams from Roy Orbison.
‘Mister Sandman bring me a dream, make her complexion like peaches and cream.’

1022-Brothers Johnson-Strawberry Letter 23.
1977-Number 35 single.
Best Bit-At 2.30.It’s the second best song in the world ever with the word strawberry in the title.
‘Strawberry Letter 23’ was written in 1971 by a then 17 year old Shuggie Otis,it was released on his second studio Album, ‘Freedom Flight.’Otis was born Johnny Veliotes in Los Angeles,California,he is the son of Johnny Otis (1921-2012,) who is universally recognised as one of the main players in the development of Rock ‘N’ Roll, and R&B music.
‘Strawberry Letter 23’ is a poetic love song, the narrator is so in love that all he can see around him appears beautiful. He and his partner have been sending each other love letters, the songs lyrics refer to strawberry letter 22,because what we are hearing is the as yet not composed strawberry letter 23.The letters the narrator receives are scented of strawberry, there are rose petals inside.
In 1977 the Brothers Johnson,George and Louis (see also best songs 889) recorded this version for their second studio Album ‘Right on Time,’it was produced by the legendary Quincy Jones. The 12 inch version was pressed on red strawberry scented vinyl, and the 7 inch version had a strawberry scented sleeve.

1021-Kenny Lynch-Up on the Roof.
1962-Number 10 single.
Best Bit-At 1.32.When life becomes too stressful, when all you want is some time alone, why not climb the steps, and sit on the roof. It’s even more fun if you take some binoculars with you.
‘Up on the Roof’ was written by the legendary songwriting team of Gerry Goffin (1939-2014,) and his then wife Carole King (see also best songs 98,) in later years, Goffin would cite this song as his favourite lyric. The first recording of the song was by Little Eva, but in America the track was made famous by The Drifters, who took their cover to Number 5 on Billboard. In the UK there were two versions competing,Julie Grant peaked at Number 33, with her Tony Hatch produced version, and this more true to The Drifters recording by Kenny Lynch.
