1010-Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood-Summer Wine.
1967-Has never been released as a single in the UK.
Best Bit-At 0.23.A fine song is like a fine wine, it improves with age.
Barton Lee Hazlewood was born in 1929, in Mannford, Oklahoma,United States, he died in 2007 from renal cancer. His initial success came in the late 1950’s, co-writing and producing with the guitar legend Duane Eddy, together they recorded some of the best instrumentals of the era, including ‘Peter Gunn,’ and ‘Forty Miles of Bad Road.’ In the 1960’s he teamed up with Nancy Sinatra, together they recorded three Albums. Hazlewood was responsible for writing both of Sinatra’s UK Number 1 singles,’These Boots are Made For Walkin,” and ‘Somethin’ Stupid’ (see also best songs 978-367 and 124.)
‘Summer Wine’ is taken from the 1968 ‘Nancy & Lee’ Album. The song tells the tale of a man who meets a woman, they spend the night together drinking large amounts of wine. When the man awakes next morning hungover, he notices that she has gone, and has taken his expensive silver spurs, but instead of feeling robbed, he finds himself longing that she was still there with him.
‘She took my silver spurs, a dollar and a dime, and left me cravin’ for more summer wine.

1009-The Human League-The Things That Dreams Are Made Of.
1981-Has never been released as a single in the UK.
Best Bit-At 3.02.They were nicknamed the ‘Electronic ABBA,’with very good reason.
‘The Things That Dreams Are Made Of’ is the opening song from The Human League’s third Album ‘Dare,’ it was the first release with their new lineup. ‘Dare’ is one of the most critically acclaimed, and inspiring Albums of all time, ushering in the new commercial sound of ‘Synthpop’ (see also best songs 986)
‘The Things That Dreams Are Made Of’ was co-written by the band members Phil Oakey, and Philip Adrian Wright, the lyrics tell us to do the things that give us the greatest pleasure. Oakey and Wright tell us of some of their simple pleasures, such as watching TV, and eating ice cream,as well as doing more adventurous things, like travelling the world. They also mention their affection for the late great comedian Norman Wisdom, and the Punk Rock band The Ramones, where Oakey sings ‘Johnny, Joey, Dee Dee,’ presumably Tommy fails to get name checked because it didn’t fit in with the rhythm of the song.
‘Dream life the way you think it ought to be,see things you thought you’d never ever see.’

1008-Frazier Chorus-Sloppy Heart.
1989-Number 73 single.
Best Bit-At 2.34.Far be it from me to stir things up,but if you are only even vaguely familiar with the ‘Brit Pop ‘ song ‘Common People’ you can’t fail to hear where Jarvis Cocker took his inspiration.(See best songs 285.)
The Frazier Chorus should have been big,but for whatever reason it never happened. They never managed to break into the UK top 40 despite a string of original quality songs, their highest chart placing was with the track ‘Nothing,’ which peaked at Number 51 in 1990.
The band formed in Brighton,England in 1986, and were active until 1996,they were labelled by the music press of the time, under the musical genre of ‘Dream Pop,’ which is an alternative take on traditional Pop.They didn’t focus predominantly on guitar, bass, or drums, instead focusing on flute, clarinet, bongos, and hushed vocals. The bands lead singer and predominant songwriter was Tim Freeman,he is the brother of actor Martin Freeman, known for portraying Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit film trilogy, and also playing Tim Canterbury in the sitcom ‘The Office.’
’69 eyes, miscellaneous,Lazarus heart, every time you need me,I’ll be there for you.’

To compliment my recently completed ‘1000 BEST SONGS LIST,’ I shall over the next few weeks, publish some of the songs that failed to make the final cut.

1007-Disco Tex and the Sex-O-Lettes-Get Dancin.’
1974-Number 2 single.
Best Bit-At 1.10. D.J.Disco Tex always had his Sex-O-Lettes around him, I have been more fortunate, in that I never had that type of thing as a distraction, meaning I could fully concentrate on the music, lucky me.
Joseph Montanez Jr. was born in 1942, to a Puerto Rican family in The Bronx, New York City, from the mid 1970’s, through to the early 1980’s, he released three studio Albums as ‘Disco Tex,’ but it was back in 1966 when he first found fame, when making several appearances on ‘The Merv Griffin Show,’ endearing audiences with his outrageous personality, using the stage name of ‘Monti Rock.’His other major claim to fame was his appearance in the 1977 film ‘Saturday Night Fever,’ playing the part of the club Disc Jockey.
‘Get Dancin”was co-written by songwriting legend Bob Crewe (1930-2014,)(see also best songs 914-863-739-499-393-284-164-112 and 83,) and Kenny Nolan. In 1974, two songs they co-wrote became consecutive Billboard Number 1’s, when Frankie Valli’s ‘My Eyes Adored You,’ was replaced at the top by ‘Lady Marmalade,’ from Labelle.
‘Here comes D.J.Disco Tex, truckin’ with his Sex-O-Lettes.’

1006-Oasis-Don’t Look Back in Anger.
1996-Number 1 single.
Best Bit-At 3.40.It would be a good idea for the Gallagher brothers to settle their differences, by taking heed of this songs title.
‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’ was the tenth single release, and second UK Number 1 for Oasis, it was also the first single that Noel sang lead vocals,he is also responsible for writing, and producing the song.It appears that Liam’s contribution was shaking the tambourine.
Noel Gallagher (see also best songs 758 and 15) readily admits to being heavily influenced by the Beatles, and John Lennon in particular. The songs piano intro borrows heavily from Lennon’s 1971 song ‘Imagine,’while the line ‘So I start a revolution from my bed,’ is a reference to Lennon’s and Yoko Ono’s ‘Bed In,’ staged for publicity for peace in 1968.The lyrics ‘The brains I had went to my head,’ are taken from Lennon’s tape recorded notes, for a memoir he was planning to write before his death.
The song does include some original Gallagher thoughts, the line ‘Stand up beside the fireplace, take that look from off your face,’refers to when he was a child, his mother Peggy used to make him stand next to the fireplace, and have photos taken. He always looked grumpy in those photos, so she told him to take that look off his face.
‘Please don’t put your life in the hands of a Rock ‘N’ Roll band, who’ll throw it all away.’

1005-Bachman-Turner Overdrive-You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet.
1974-Number 2 single.
Best Bit-At-0.01.For those of you old enough to remember Smashie and Nicey, ‘LETS ROCK!’
‘BTO’ were formed in Winnipeg,Canada in 1973, by the brothers Randy,Tim and Robbie Bachman, and Fred Turner, who had been recommended to Randy Bachman by Neil Young. Previous to forming ‘BTO,’ (see also best songs 873) Randy Bachman had been a member of the very successful Rock group, ‘The Guess Who.’
‘You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet’ was initially written to poke fun at his brother Gary who had a speech impediment, Randy would sing it while stuttering over the lyrics,a straight version was recorded, but the band felt that the stuttering version was far superior, the song went on to top the Billboard chart in 1974.
Although Bachman has never admitted to it, the song probably owes a great debt to the English Rock group ‘The Who,’whose most famous song ‘My Generation’ (see also best songs 926) contains a very famous stutter, and ‘You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet’s ‘guitar riff is definitely influenced by The Who’s song, ‘Baba O’Riley.’
‘B-B-B-Baby,you just ain’t seen n-n-n-nothin’ yet.’

1004-The Members-Sound of the Suburbs.
1979-Number 12 single.
Best Bit-At 0.30.’Annoying the neighbours with his Punk Rock electric guitar.’
Although ‘The Members’ may not be remembered as ‘Punk Rock’ premiere league, they are critically acclaimed, and will be forever an important part of the mid, to late 1970’s Punk music scene. The original lineup were formed in Camberley,England in 1976 by lyricist Nicky Tesco, the band continue to tour to this day, albeit with non of the original lineup. In-fact there have been eighteen different ‘Members’ over the last 44 years, including this songs co-writer Jean Marie Carroll, drummer Rat Scabies(ex Damned,) and Adrian Lillywhite, whose brother the legendary Steve Lillywhite, produced this song.
The songs lyrics spoke to the working class youth of 1979, speaking of the sterile life of suburbia, and the dead end street ahead.Punk Rockers loved the line from the song.
‘Rock groups just wanna be free, yeah, they want ANARCHY.’

1003-Bryan Adams-Summer of 69.
1985-Number 42 single.
Best Bit-At 2.09.It’s the summer of 69…but you will know it better as ‘Soixante Neuf.’
Bryan Adams was born on 5th November, 1959 in Kingston,Ontario, he is one of Canada’s most successful musical exports, with sales in excess of 75 million units. His 1991 song (‘Everything I Do) I Do It For You,’ holds the UK chart record of spending 16 consecutive weeks at Number 1.
‘Summer of 69′ was co-written by Adams, and long term writing partner Jim Vallance. The song is about reminiscing on ones youth, Adams has said,’It’s a very simple song about looking back on the summertime, and making love. For me the ’69’ was a metaphor for making love, not about the year.’ That of course comes as a relief, as Adams was only nine years old in the summer of 69.
According to Jim Valance many of the songs lyrics were inspired by other songs,’ I got my first real six-string,’ was influenced by the Foreigner song ‘Juke Box Hero,’ and the line ‘Standin’ on your mama’s porch, you told me that you’d wait forever,’ was inspired by the Bruce Springsteen song ‘Thunder Road.’
‘Jimmy quit, Jody got married, I should’ve known, we’d never get far.’

1002-Lewis Capaldi-Bruises.
2016-Did not chart in the UK until 2019 reaching Number 6.
Best Bit-At 0.55.Lewis Capaldi made history by becoming the first artist ever to announce and sell out an arena tour before the release of a debut Album.
Lewis Capaldi was born on 7 October,1996 in Glasgow, Scotland, his debut Album ‘Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent,’ was the best selling Album of 2019, it includes the UK, and Billboard Number 1 single ‘Someone You Loved,’ which made Capaldi the first Scottish solo artist since Sheena Easton in 1981, with her song ‘Morning Train,’ to top the American singles chart.
Capaldi co-wrote ‘Bruises’ with the songs producer James Earp on his 20th Birthday, he had just broken up with his girlfriend of 18 months. Capaldi sings about bruises rather than scars,he explained, ‘Bruises seem like an altogether more repairable thing than scars. At times your memory of an old relationship will be clouded, and you’ll only remember the best parts of being with someone, ignoring the reasons why things came to an end makes the idea of holding on to it, or wanting to go back to it seem more enticing than it actually is.’
‘And every breath that I’ve been takin’ since you left, feels like a waste on me.’

1001-Diana Ross and the Supremes and The Temptations-I’m Gonna Make You Love Me.
1969-Number 3 single.
Best Bit-At 0.50.With a total of 5 Temptations and 3 Supremes,Tamla Motown had to break into the petty cash, so that everyone could have their own microphone.
‘I’m Gonna Make You Love Me’ was co-written in 1966 by future ‘Philadelphia Records’ supremo Kenny Gamble (see also best songs 896-725-648 and 322,) who at that time was the protege of the established songwriter Jerry Ross (1933-2017.)
