THE 1000 BEST SONGS N THE WORLD EVER.
396-The Flamingos-I Only Have Eyes For You.
1959-Has never charted in the UK.
Best Bit-At 2.14.One of the most fascinating things about compiling this list is noting the progression in popular music. The Flamingos were influenced by groups such as The Mills Brothers and The Ink Spots and in turn The Temptations have publicly stated the debt they owe The Flamingos.
I Only Have Eyes For You was written for the 1934 romantic comedy film ‘Dames’ by composer Harry Warren(see also best songs 775) and lyricist Al Dubin. The film version is performed by Dick Powell and Ruby Keeler, but the first successful charting version on Billboard was by Band Leader Ben Sevin in 1934.
Two other notable recordings are by The Lettermen from 1966 and Art Garfunkel who had a UK Number 1 hit in 1975 with the song.

Isaac Hayes(see also best songs 530) was asked by Joel Freeman the producer of the Metro Goldwyn Mayer film-Shaft to write the films soundtrack,Hayes agreed but only on condition he could audition for the lead role of John Shaft, even when he found out the part had already been given to Richard Roundtree Hayes kept his end of the deal.

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
399-The Conway Brothers-Turn It Up.
1985-Number 11 single.
Best Bit-At 2.05.When I was in my youth, whenever i was called ‘young man’ I would find it very condescending. All these years later if I was called it now I would smile from ear to ear.
The Conway Brothers were an American Funk and Disco band from Chicago made up of the brothers Frederick,(keyboards) Hiawatha,(drums) Huston,(bass) and James(guitar.)
The song has been described as retaining the old school feel of 70’s disco while incorporating the more up to date sound (of its era) of the mid 1980’s.

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.

COMING NEXT THE BEST 400.

I imagine that in hundreds of years time people will look back on the decades of the 1930’s through to 20- -? as a golden period for the art form of music, much in the same way as we look back at composers like Beethoven and Strauss or playwrights such as Shakespeare
Names such as Bowie,Lennon and Dylan and many more are already assured their legendary place in history and over time will only become more revered as future generations study what they left us.
The question though is have we already heard the best of what music has to offer? Every generation needs it’s own new musical identity which will shock and outrage the previous one,but have all the original ideas already been done?
It could be an age thing because most people will always say ‘they don’t make songs like they used to,’but one thing I have noticed while compiling this countdown is the lack of real quality songs I feel I can choose from the 21st century and there seems to be less with each passing year.
I remember as a young teenager in 1975 saying to a DJ a lot older than myself at the time,’has everything been done, what can they come up with next.’My question of course was answered over the next few years with the arrival of Punk,New Wave,Electronic Music,Grunge and much, much more,so who knows this ‘Golden Period’ hopefully might not be over yet.
Will we be lucky enough to hear a new Prince,Stevie Wonder or Mick Jagger?

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
401-The Velvet Underground-Sweet Jane.
1970-Has never charted in the UK.
Best Bit-At 0.17.Lou Reed wrote lots of songs about drugs and transvestites, but this wasn’t one of them.
The Velvet Underground were formed in 1964 by Lou Reed,John Cale,Sterling Morrison and Angus MacLise.
During their years recording together they achieved little commercial success but the are now recognised as one of the most influential bands in Rock and crucial in the development of Punk Rock and New Wave.
In this song written by Lou Reed he is telling the younger generation not to make assumptions that they know everything, maybe the older people(Jack and Jane) were once like them. The song is an appeal for inter-generational understanding.
‘But anyone who ever had a heart, they wouldn’t turn around and break it and anyone who ever played a part they wouldn’t turn around and hurt it.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
402-Blondie-Heart Of Glass.
1979-Number 1 single.
Best Bit-At 0.59.A lot of the Debbie Harry fan base were not pleased at the bands change in musical style, but I bet they left her posters on their walls.
In 1978 successful music producer Mike Chapman(see also best songs 860, 773 and 686) was drafted in to produce what would become Blondie’s third studio Album,’Parallel Lines’.He wanted to know if there were any demo’s from the past that had not been used. Debbie Harry and Chris Stein played him a song they had written back in 1974 called ‘Once I Had A Love,’the song had a slower funky sound with a disco beat, for this reason the band referred to it as ‘The Disco Song.’Chapman convinced them to record the song in a disco style and Heart Of Glass was born, projecting the band Blondie in to the mainstream.
Up until this point Blondie had been a rock and new wave outfit respected among their peers. Many of their early fan base chose to disown them citing that they had sold out .
‘In between what I find is pleasing and I’m feeling fine, love is so confusing there’s no peace of mind.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
403-Fatman Scoop-Be Faithful.
1999-Did not chart until 2003 when reaching Number 1.
Best Bit-At 2.13. If your looking for answers to the great questions such as the meaning of life then your definitely on the wrong page.
Just because a song is not serious or has any hidden meaning is not justification for passing it over.If there is a message it is ‘have fun’ and that is just what this song has achieved, bringing together and putting a smile on many a face.
Fatman Scoop was born Isaac Freeman in New York in 1971,he got his stage name from his Uncle Jack because when he was a baby he loved to eat ice cream.
The female vocals on the track are provided by Faith Evans the widow of Christopher ‘The Notorious B.I.G.’ Wallace, sampled from her 1998 song ‘Love Like This,’which in turn was built around a sample of Chic’s ‘Chic Cheer, from 1978.
