The 1000 best songs in the world ever.
836-Elvis Costello-Oliver’s Army.
1979-Number 2 single.
Best Bit-At 1.49 A deceptively jolly tune, just because a song is uptempo and has a happy beat doesn’t mean it isn’t hiding a sinister message.
Some music critics have suggested that the title refers to Oliver Cromwell whose New Model Army was a forerunner to the modern British Army.Of the songs meaning Costello said ‘I made my first trip to Belfast in 1978 and saw mere boys walking around in battle dress with automatic weapons, the song was based on the premise they always get a working class boy to do the killing.’

The 1000 best songs in the world ever.
838-Petula Clark-Downtown.
1964-Number 2 single.
Best Bit-At-1.54 In America ‘Downtown’ is the heart of the city where the action happens. The word isn’t used much in Brittan, but it generally means the less affluent part of town.
The writer of the song Tony Hatch used the word in the American meaning as he was inspired by a walk down Broadway during his first visit to New York. The song got to Number 1 on Billboard but was kept off the top spot in the UK by The Beatles song I Feel Fine.

The 1000 best songs in the world ever.
840-Sparks-This town Ain’t Big Enough For The Both Of Us.
1974-Number 2 single.
Best Bit-At 1.39 If Ron Mael and his menacing Adolf Hitler moustache tell you there isn’t room for the both of you, leave.
Sparks are brothers Ron and Russell Mael who originally formed in 1968 under the name Halfnelson,on September 8th 2017 they released their 24th Studio Album called Hippopotamus. In 1974 Glam Rock was at its peak and this song belongs in that genre. The track has very quirky lyrics but basically the song’s main character keeps trying to work up the nerve to ask girls out but always chickens out,in order to make him feel better about himself he watches old cowboy movies.

The 1000 best songs in the world ever.
844-The Charlatans-The Only One I Know.
1990-Number 9 single.
Best Bit-At 2.46 They did not try to hide the fact they lifted the organ riff from Deep Purple’s 1967 song Hush. Many of the lyrics were taken directly from The Byrds 1967 song Everybody’s Been Burned.
Although The Charlatans are associated with the ‘Madchester’ scene only lead singer Tim Burgess came from the area as the band were originally formed in the West Midlands.
