The song was written in 1964 by Ed Cobb(Feb-1938-Sept-1999) and originally recorded by Gloria Jones.In 1973 British club DJ Richard Searling purchased a copy while on a trip to the United States.The tracks Motown influenced sound fit in perfectly with the music favored by those involved in the UK Northern Soul scene of the early 1970s.Marc Almond and David Ball of Soft Cell became aware of the song and recorded a drastically different arrangement with synthesizers which were very much the latest thing at the time.The song went on to become the biggest selling song in the UK in 1981.
