MNEK is also a songwriter and producer,his many credits include work for Madonna,Beyonce,Kylie Minogue,Dua Lipa and many more.In 2014 he wrote ‘Gecko’ (Overdrive) the Number 1 single for Oliver Heldens’.

Mr. Oizo is the performing name of Parisian born musician and video director Quentin Dupieux.He states that it took him only two hours to put the song together.It is mainly composed of a repeated bassline and samples the Fatback Bands(see also best songs 798) song ‘Put Your Love In My Tender Care.’
The songs success was largely aided by being featured in another very successful Levi’s commercial(see also best songs 804) and for also featuring the puppet Flat Eric in the songs promotional video.Flat Eric was built by ‘Jim Henson’s Creature Shop,’who were the team behind The Muppets and Sesame Street.

1976-Has never charted in the UK.
Best Bit-At 0.56.Although the song’s subject is fictional Bishop has stated ‘I write much better when I’m heartbroken and sad or melancholy.’
Stephen Bishop got his break when Art Garfunkel was impressed enough to include two of Bishop’s songs on his 1975 Album ‘Breakaway.’
‘On And On’ is taken from Bishop’s 1976 debut Album ‘Careless.’Notable contributors on the Album include Chaka Khan,Andrew Gold,Art Garfunkel and Eric Clapton who mentions Bishop in his autobiography as one of his favourite singer songwriters.
It is worth checking out British Reggae group Aswad’s version of this song (especially the 12inch version) which they took to Number 25 in 1989.

1972-Number 12 single.
Best Bit-At 1.23.This song was recorded in mono with just a ‘Lowrey’ organ,a drum machine and a very,very,very Soulful voice.
The song was presented to ‘TK Records’ producer Steve Alaimo with the view to it being re-recorded with a full band,but on hearing the demo Alaimo decided the song was already finished the way it was.Released in 1972 it has gone on to sell over 2 million copies,peaking at Number 3 on Billboard.
Timmy Thomas explained how he got the idea for the song.’I was sitting in my study and I heard Walter Cronkite,he said 35,000 Viet Cong died today,15.000 Americans.I said WHAT?! you mean that many mothers’ children died today,I said,Why can’t we live together.’
In 2015 Canadian Rapper and singer Drake(see best songs 921 and 858) brought Thomas to the attention of a whole new generation when he sampled this song for his Billboard Number 2 and UK Number 3 single ‘Hotline Bling.’

The Rays were an American Doo-Wop group,formed in New York and active from 1955 until the mid 1960’s.They were signed to the small independent record label ‘XYZ’ which was owned by this songs authors Bob Crewe and Frank Slay Jr.Silhouettes went onto sell over 1 million copies and reached Number 3 on Billboard.
Silhouettes was the first major success for Bob Crewe who went onto co-write many of the Four Seasons best known songs including ‘Sherry’ and ‘Big Girls Don’t Cry.’Crew’s songs will feature again later on in this countdown,but you can already read about ‘Music To Watch Girls By,'(see best songs 914) and ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off You'(see best songs 863.)

Tenacious D are an American comedy rock duo comprised of Jack Black and Kyle Gass,they have both appeared in several films and Television programmes.
Don’t be fooled into thinking they are just a novelty comic act,they can hold their own in the music world and have toured with such acts as Beck and The Foo Fighters.
‘Tribute’ finds Black and Gass hitchhiking down the road when Satan appears and tells them to play the best song in the world,or he will eat their souls.Forgetting what the greatest song in the world is they play something else as a tribute.The devil in the video is played by David Grohl(see best songs 999 and 788.)

On June 29th 2017 I finally got around to doing what I have had in mind for quite a while,listing the 1000 best songs of all time.With over 40 years of playing music for a living I feel qualified to do this listing justice.
There have been many lists produced before including the prestigious one from ‘Rolling Stone Magazine,’but where mine differs from all the others is in it’s diversity.I have included songs from as far back as the 1930’s all the way through to the best of 2018,if hopefully there will be any worthy of entry.
To qualify for entry a song must give that feeling that only a great song can give.or it must be the defining song of one of the worlds greatest artists or bands,or when played to a crowd be instantly loved.
There isn’t room to include,say ten songs from David Bowie,Stevie Wonder or The Beatles so only their very best will be listed.

501-Black Box-Ride On Time.
1989-Number 1 single.
Best Bit-At 0.38.Every now and then throughout the years I hear a song that sounds like nothing I’ve heard before.This song hailed the start of the popularity of the musical genre ‘Itaio House.’
Black Box are an Italian Dance music group comprising of Daniele Davoli,Vaerio Semplici and Mirko Limoni.
They created an image for the Black Box act by using French fashion model Katrin Quinol on their Album/singles cover art and lip-syncing on the video’s and when performing live.
The vocals you hear on Ride On Time are actually provided by the late Loleatta Holloway,Black Box sampled them from the 1980 Disco song ‘Love Sensation,’written by the late Dan Hartman.
On ‘Love Sensation’ Holloway actually sings ‘Right on time.’Daniele Davoli explained that owing to his limited knowledge of English he thought Holloway sang ‘Ride on time instead of ‘right on time.’

502-Creedence Clearwater Revival-Bad Moon Rising.
1969-Number 1 single.
Best Bit-At 0.34 ‘There’s a bathroom on the right.’
This song contains one of the most famous misheard lyrics.’There’s a bad moon on the rise’ is often heard as ‘There’s a bathroom on the right.’It became so famous that when John Fogerty performs it live he sings the bathroom line and points towards the toilets from the stage.
Fogerty wrote ‘Bad Moon Rising’ after watching the 1941 fantasy film ‘The Devil and Daniel Webster,’inspired by a scene involving a hurricane.It is ironic that a song inspired by someone watching a film has been featured many times on the soundtrack of several famous movies over the years.
This is not the only classic song written by John Fogerty,he also wrote ‘Proud Mary,(see best songs 752) and ‘Rockin’ All Over The World,’made famous by Status Quo who opened ‘Live Aid’ with the song in 1985.

503-Minnie Ripperton-Lovin’ You.
1975-Number 2 single.
Best Bit-At 2.56.I bet your surprised to see I’ve included the birdie song.
Minnie Ripperton died from breast cancer at the age of 31 in 1979.She had a five octave coloratura soprano,which is a type of operatic soprano voice.
As a youngster she trained to be an opera singer but instead chose Soul and Rhythm & Blues.
At the age of 15 she joined the girl group ‘The Gems’ and was one of the backing singers on the classic 1965 Fontella Bass song Rescue Me.
Lovin’ You was co-written by Ripperton and her husband Richard Rudolph(see best songs 735) and produced by Stevie Wonder,who also played Keyboards on the song and it’s accompanying Album ‘Perfect Angel.’
It will come as no surprise that Mariah Carey states Minnie Ripperton as one of her main influences.
