THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
69-Madness-Night Boat to Cairo.
1980-Number 6 single.
Best Bit-0.30.According to the songs co-writer Mike Barson,’It was supposed to be an instrumental and then Suggs bloody got hold of it and wrote all those dodgy lyrics.’
There had already been three hit singles released off the debut Album,’One Step Beyond’ and Madness were keen to release new material, but the record company insisted a further song off the Album should be a single. The compromise was the release of Night Boat to Cairo along with three new songs on an ‘EP,’ to be called the ‘Work Rest and Play EP.’
The song has become a fan favourite and is often played as the encore of the bands live concerts(see also best songs 801.)
Night Boat to Cairo and it’s parent Album One Step Beyond were produced by Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley who were very influential in 1980’s and 1990’s music production. Some of the artists and Albums they produced include Dexys Midnight Runners(Too Rye-Ay,) Elvis Costello(Punch the Clock,) and Morrissey(Kill Unkle.)
It’s just gone noon,half-past monsoon on the banks of the river Nile.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
70-Faces-Stay with Me.
1972-Number 6 single.
Best Bit-At 3.19 and again at 3.41 and again at 3.52 and again at 4.02 and again at 4.13.
‘Stay with Me’ was co-written by Rod Stewart(see also best songs 965-565-206 and 179) and guitarist Ronnie Wood. The song tells of a one night stand where Stewart tells us how to pick up a groupie,he makes it very clear that she must be gone in the morning ,although he does offer to pay her cab fare home.He notes her ‘red lips, hair and fingernails’ and repeats the rumour that she’s a ‘mean old Jezebel.’Stewart had just had a Number 1 song with ‘Maggie May’ which was based on a true story, where he had been the subject of a sexual conquest by an older woman.A psychiatrist could write a whole thesis on this.
The Faces were formed in 1969 by Ian McLagan(1945-2014) Ronnie Lane(1946-1997,) and Kenney Jones, who had all been members of the very successful Rock group the Small Faces(see also best songs 872.)They were joined by Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood who had just left the Jeff Beck Group.Together they released four studio Albums between 1970-1973,before they split in 1975.
‘In the morning don’t say you love me,’cause I’ll only kick you out of the door.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
71-Simon & Garfunkel-Bridge over Troubled Water.
1970-Number 1 single.
Best Bit-At 4.02.The final verse was inspired by Paul Simon’s future wife Peggy Harper finding out she had a few grey hairs beginning to appear, which was upsetting her.
The line ‘Sail on silver girl’ was once reputed by ‘conspiracy theorists’ to refer to a needle, meaning the song is about Heroin, but Paul Simon has said the lyric was meant as a joke as he used to call Harper ‘Silver Girl.’
The songs title was inspired by Claude Jeter’s line,’I’ll be your bridge over deep water if you trust in me,’ from the 1958 Christian Music song ‘Mary Don’t You Weep’ by Jeter’s group the Swan Silvertones. Simon(see also best songs 529-200 and 96) recognised the inspiration by offering Jeter a cheque for royalties. Jeter also sang on Simon’s 1973 song ‘Take Me To The Mardi Gras.’
The songs production was modelled on Phil Spector’s ‘Old Man River’ by the Righteous Brothers. As stated on many previous occasions in this countdown Spector is famous for his ‘Wall Of Sound’ production technique and when he did Old Man River he kept it mainly piano through most of the song, but had it end with a flourish of instruments.
There are many cover versions,of which three I recommend highly. In 1970 Elvis Presley recorded the song for his Album ‘That’s the Way It Is,’Simon has said he was honoured that Presley sang one of his songs.Perhaps Aretha Franklin’s Gospel inspired version is the one that is truest to how Simon originally envisaged it sounding,Franklin’s version peaked at Number 6 on Billboard in 1971.I would also recommend the 10 minute Disco version from Linda Clifford,a UK Number 28 hit single in 1979.
The song became a UK Number 1 again in 2017.To raise money for the families of the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire a charity single was released featuring many of the then current crop of Pop Stars.

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
72-Morrissey-First of the Gang to Die.
2004-Number 6 single.
Best Bit-At 2.29.As you probably know by now I am a great believer in the theory that all the best songs are written by people under the age of 30,that is to say that an artist has produced their best material by that age,but of course there is always an exception to every rule and here it is.
These wonderful lyrics were written by Morrissey(see also best songs 940-673-222 and 167) at the age of 45,while the music was the work of Alain Whyte who was already 37. Whyte first joined forces with Morrissey in 1991 and through till 2009 appeared on all eight Morrissey studio Albums,he has a total of eighty known songwriting credits with Morrissey. After the parting of the ways Whyte has gone on to work with the some of the worlds leading R&B artists including Rihanna and Chris Brown.
What is the song actually about? This is one of the most difficult in this countdown to decipher,on the face of it Morrissey appears to be singing about gang violence in Los Angeles, but of course there will be a much deeper meaning.I think Morrissey is telling us that you can only understand what love really is after suffering being rejected by somebody, you have to go through the emotional pain to really understand.
‘And he stole from the rich and the poor and not very rich and the very poor and he stole our hearts away.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
73-Frank Sinatra-I’ve Got You Under My Skin.
1956-Has never been released as a single in the UK.
Best Bit-At 2.18.Many genres of music have an exciting crescendo and in ‘Swing,’ it doesn’t come any better than this.Nelson Riddle’s arrangement is brought to a peak by the slide trombone of Milt Bernhart(1926-2004.)
This song is taken from Frank Sinatra’s(see also best songs 877-567-469 and 120) tenth studio Album,’Songs for Swingin’ Lovers!’ On July 22nd,1956 the UK compiled it’s first official Album chart and that L.P. became the first ever chart topper. The Album was arranged by Nelson Riddle(1921-1985,) who has stated that a big influence in his formative years was hearing Serge Koussevitsky and the Boston Symphony Orchestra playing Maurice Ravel’s,Bolero.’He said.’I’ve never forgotten it.It’s almost as if the orchestra leaped from the stage and smacked you in the face.’
The song was written twenty years earlier in 1936 by Cole Porter(see also best songs 944-655 and 295) for the musical film ‘Born to Dance,’ in which it was performed by the American actress and singer Virginia Bruce(1909-1982.)
In the UK the song has charted twice. In 1966 The Four Seasons took their version to Number 12 and in 1990 Nenah Cherry recorded a Hip-Hop interpretation for the charity Album ‘Red Hot + Blue which peaked at Number 25.
‘I would sacrifice anything come what might for the sake of having you near.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
74-The Beach Boys-Do It Again.
1968-Number 1 single.
Best Bit-At 1.24.The song is about fondly remembering the past in detail and correctly reminiscing, which is ironic really because Brian Wilson thinks the song was written at Mike Love’s house and Love thinks it was written at Wilson’s house.
The Beach Boys were formed in Hawthorne,California in 1961 by the brothers Brian,Dennis and Carl Wilson(1946-1998,) their cousin Mike Love and their friend Al Jardine. Brian Wilson is often referred to as a genius because of his innovative and unorthodox approach to the development of studio recording techniques(see also best songs 930-811 and 180.)
By 1968 The Beach Boys had moved away from their earlier ‘Surf Music’ based material and their record sales were in decline.’Do It Again’s’ lyrics were written by Mike Love who was inspired after having spent a day at the beach with an old friend.Love showed the lyrics to Brian Wilson who proceeded to write the music.Wilson has stated that he believes the song was the best one he and Love ever worked on.
‘Do It Again’ took The Beach Boys back to the top of the UK chart giving them their second and final Number 1 single.
‘Well I’ve been thinking ’bout all the places we’ve surfed and danced and all the faces we’ve missed.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
75-House of Pain-Jump Around.
1992-Number 32 single,when reissued in 1993 it reached Number 8.
Best Bit-At 0.32.For those who love coincidences or useless facts this ones for you.Did you know that the ‘B’ side of Van Halen’s 1984 American Number 1 single ‘Jump’ was a song called House of Pain(see also best songs 647.)
House of Pain were an American Hip-Hop group formed in Los Angeles in 1991 by Erik Schrody(Everlast,) Daniel O’Connor(Danny Boy,) and Leor Dimant(DJ Lethal.) The groups name is a reference to the 1896 science fiction novel by H.G.Wells called ‘The Island of Dr. Moreau.’
The songs beat was produced by Laurence Muggerud(DJ Muggs) who at the time was a member of fellow Hip-Hop group Cyprus Hill(see also best songs 963,) but they didn’t want it,so he offered it to Ice Cube who also refused it.The track was eventually accepted by the House of Pain with Everlast adding the lyrics.
At 0.25 seconds into the song you can hear a distinctive horn fanfare, this is sampled from the 1963 Bob & Earl song,’Harlem Shuffle'(see also best songs 696.)The song is also famous for a high pitched squealing sound that appears at the beginning of almost every bar,66 times in total,(more useless facts.) The origin of the squeal has been subject to debate. Some think it is sampled from the tenor saxophone in the Junior Walker song,’Shoot your Shot,’ while it has been suggested it is Prince squealing from his 1991 song ‘Gett Off.’ Everlast has said it is definitely not Prince, but as it has been pointed out admitting to a Prince sample would have dire financial consequences.
‘Pack it up pack it in let me begin,I came to win, battle me that’s a sin.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
76-Candi Staton-Young Hearts Run Free.
1976-Number 2 single.
Best Bit-At 3.58.The actual pronunciation of her surname is ‘STAY-TAN.’ How many of you DJ’s and presenters have been getting it wrong all these years?
Canzetta Maria Staton was born,March 13,1940 in Hanceville,Alabama,U.S. Her singing career began in 1953,with her latest Album,’Unstoppable’ being released in 2018.During that time she has covered Soul,R&B, Gospel,House,Dance and Disco music. In the 1990’s she reached a whole new generation when providing the vocals for the ‘House Music’ track ‘You Got the Love'(1991-Number 4 single and when remixed in 1997 it reached Number 3.)
‘Young Hearts Run Free’ was written by David Crawford(1943-1988,) Staton has said,’David Crawford was always asking me,’What’s happening in your life,’ and I was then with someone I shouldn’t have been with and it was hard getting out of that…very abusive relationship.I noticed that he was taking notes, and he said,’You know I’m gonna write you a song that’s gonna last forever.’
The songs lyrics are based on Candi Staton’s real life experiences, they are a warning to young girls not to stay in an abusive relationship.
‘It’s high time now just one crack at life, who wants to live in,in trouble and strife.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
77-The Rolling Stones-(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.
1965-Number 1 single.
Best Bit-At 2.40.The song that catapulted The Stones from just another band into the second most popular of that time.
‘(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction’ was written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards(see also best songs 933-662-452 and 160.) Richards has stated that he awoke in the middle of the night with this songs riff in his head,he recorded it with his acoustic guitar on to a Philips cassette player, then went back to sleep. The lyrics by Jagger are about sexual frustration and commercialism, for example the line,’but he can’t be a man ’cause he doesn’t smoke the same cigarettes as me’ is a reference to the ‘Marlboro Cowboy’ a figure used by the Marlboro tobacco company to advertise cigarettes from 1955-1999.Another lyric,’baby, better come back maybe next week can’t you see I’m on a losing streak,’ is a reference to menstruation.
Keith Richards was not totally happy with all the tracks instrumentation,he felt it would benefit if a horn section was added, but he was overruled by the other Stones and Andrew Loog Oldham the songs producer.Later in 1965 Soul legend Otis Redding recorded a version using a horn section which Richards endorsed.
‘When I’m ridin’ ’round the world and I’m doin’ this and I’m signin’ that and I’m tryin’ to make some girl.’
