THE BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER

To compliment my recently completed ‘1000 BEST SONGS LIST,’ here is another that just missed the cut.

1035-Midnight Oil-Beds Are Burning.
1987-Number 6 single.
Best Bit-At 0.21.Don’t get excited this isn’t about sex.
Midnight Oil are one of Australia’s most celebrated, and revered bands, they formed in Sydney,New South Wales in 1972, originally calling themselves ‘Farm.’The original line up was Peter Garrett (vocals,) Rob Hirst (drums,) Jim Moginie (guitar and keyboards,) Martin Rotsey (guitar,) and Bones Hillman (bass guitar.) They were active between 1972-2002,then reformed again in 2016,the name change occurred in 1976, when they chose Midnight Oil, from the Jimi Hendrix song, ‘Burning of the Midnight Lamp.’
‘Beds Are Burning’ is rated by the ‘Australasian Performing Right Association’ as the third best Australian song of all time, behind the Easybeats,’Friday on my Mind'(see also best songs 939) It’s parent Album ‘Diesel and Dust’ is listed as the best Australian Album ever.
‘Beds Are Burning’ is a political song about giving native Australian lands back to the Pintupi, who were among the very last people to come in from the desert.During the 1930’s through to the 1960’s, these aboriginal people were forcefully removed from land that their forefathers had lived on for generations, and taken to settlements elsewhere. This song says that was wrong, and these people should be allowed to return.
‘The time has come,a facts a fact,it belongs to them, lets give it back.’

THE BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.

To compliment my recently completed ‘1000 BEST SONGS LIST,’ here is another that just missed the cut.

1034-The Nolan Sisters-I’m In the Mood For Dancing.
1980-Number 3 single.
Best Bit-At 2.31.In 2009 for their comeback single for some inexplicable reason The Nolans’ recorded a cover of The Smiths classic ‘Panic.’I can only think of one worse recording, and that would be The Smiths doing a cover version of ‘I’m In the Mood For Dancing.’
Ireland’s ‘First Family of Music,’ as they are known originally started performing together in 1963,the original lineup was father Tommy (1925-1998,) mother Maureen (1926-2007,) their sons Tommy, and Brian, and daughters, Anne,Denise,Maureen,Linda, and Bernadette (1960-2013,) the youngest member Coleen joined in 1980, when Denise had left the group, which now just consisted of the family’s daughters.
‘I’m In the Mood For Dancing’ has become the The Nolans’ signature tune, reaching the top ten in Ireland,The Netherlands, and the UK,it also went to Number 1 in New Zealand, and South Africa, but the songs greatest success is in Japan, where it is the ninth best selling English language record of all time, with sales approaching one million copies.
‘Ooh from head to my toe, take me again, and heaven who knows, just where it will end.’

THE BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.

To compliment my recently completed ‘1000 BEST SONGS LIST,’ here is another that just missed the cut.

1033-Scooter-Nessaja.
2002-Number 4 single.
Best Bit-At 0.50.The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles may be more famous worldwide, but they never had a song this good named in their honour, but the wise old German Turtle Nessaja has.
H.P.Baxter, and Rick J.Jordan met in Hanover,Germany in 1985,initially forming the Synthpop/New Wave outfit ‘Celebrate the Nun,’ one of their main influences were Depeche Mode.Fast forward eight years, and two Albums later, the duo dramatically change style moving into ‘Happy Hardcore’, Rave, and Techno. To date they have sold over 30 million records worldwide (see also best songs 437 and 144.)
‘Nessaja’ samples the 1983 song ‘Nessaja’ by Romanian Rock musician Peter Makkay, his version was written for his children’s Rock Album ‘Tabaluga,’the story of a little green dragon of the same name. This project became so popular that it went onto be made into a Television series, film, and a Musical. One of the main characters is the turtle named Nessaja, and Makkays’ version plays over the end credits of the T.V. programmes.Scooters version also samples the KLF’s 1991 song ‘Last Train to Trancentral,’ Scooter are heavily influenced by the KLF (see also best songs 329.). The late Scottish singer Gerry Rafferty is also given a song writing credit for the use of ‘Baker Street'(see also best songs 61) being sampled, but try as hard as I can,I can’t hear it at all.
‘It’s not a bird,it’s not a plane,it must be Dave, who’s on the train.’

THE BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.

To compliment my recently completed ‘1000 BEST SONGS LIST,’ here is another that just missed the cut.

1032-Deacon Blue-Dignity.
1988-Number 31 single.When re-released in 1994 it peaked at Number 20.
Best Bit-At 1.25.An absolute Dreamboat of a song.
Deacon Blue were formed in Glasgow in 1985,they split in 1994, but reformed in 1999, and remain active to this very day, they took their name from the 1976 Steely Dan song ‘Deacon Blues.’Two of the original line up,Ricky Ross, and Lorraine McIntosh married in 1990, and now have four children. The other original band members were,,James Prime, Dougie Vipond, Ewen Vernal, and Graeme Kelling(1957-2004.)
‘Dignity’ was the first officially released single from Deacon Blue,it was written by lead singer Ricky Ross. The song tells the tale of a man whose job it is to clean the streets,he sometimes receives abuse for what he does, but he will not stand for any nonsense,he is a proud man, who always keeps his dignity. They don’t know that he is saving whatever money he can, so that one day he can live his dream of sailing away to wherever he pleases, on his ship named Dignity. Ricky Ross has said,’I have no idea why I started writing a song like that in Greece.I was sitting messing around with lyrics, bored on holiday,in a far away scene. There were men from the Glasgow cleansing department depot, who walked up and down the street with brushes outside my flay in Pollokshields.’
‘And I’m thinking about home.and I’m thinking about faith, and I’m thinking about work, and I’m thinking how good it would be to be here some day.’

THE BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.

To compliment my recently completed ‘1000 BEST SONGS LIST,’ here is another that just missed the cut.

1031-The Temptations-My Girl.
1964-Number 43 single.When re-issued in 1992 it peaked at Number 2.
Best Bit-At 0.01.Smokey Robinson had just written the Motown classic ‘My Guy,’ so I suppose with him also writing ‘My Girl,’ it balances gender equality nicely.
David Ruffin(1941-1991) had just been hired as a replacement for the recently sacked Elbridge Bryant (1939-1975,) one of the founding members of The Temptations..Smokey Robinson (see also best songs 309 and 193,) was very impressed with Ruffins’ singing, and wanted to write a song that would suit his vocal range, together with fellow ‘Smokey Robinson and The Miracles’ band member Ronald White (1939-1995,) they came up with this song.
‘My Girl’ is taken from the second Temptations (see also best songs 777-569 and 1001) studio Album ‘The Temptations Sing Smokey,’ on which David Ruffin sang lead vocal on 11 of the 12 tracks. The iconic bass guitar intro was played by Robert White (1936-1994,) of the Motown in house band, the Funk Brothers.
‘My Girl’ went to Number 1 on Billboard, the first time a Tamla Motown male group had topped the chart,in the UK, the song didn’t find success until 1992, after being included on the soundtrack of the 1991 comedy drama film of the same name.
Due to the song failing to chart in the UK, Otis Redding recorded a version, and it peaked at Number 11 in 1965.In 1980 the American R&B group The Whispers had a hit with the song, taking their version to Number 26.
I’ve got sunshine on a cloudy day, when it’s cold outside, I’ve got the month of May.’
