THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
323-Leftfield featuring John Lydon-Open Up.
1993-Number 13 single.
Best Bit-At 2.32.When two of Electronic Dance Music’s most innovative artists team up with a ‘National Treasure’ there is a fairly good chance of something special occurring.
Leftfield were formed in 1989 by Neil Barnes and Paul Daley, they were very influential in the evolution of Electronic Dance Music in the 1990’s,the term ‘Progressive House Music’ was coined to define their style.
They were known for using many different guest vocalists on their songs and felt that John Lydon would suit this one.
As Johnny Rotten he had been the lead singer of the Sex Pistols(see best songs 576) between 1975-1978,before going on to form Public Image Ltd(see best songs 967) from 1978-1993.

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
324-The White Stripes-Seven Nation Army.
2003-Number 7 single.
Best Bit-At 0.09.Jack and Meg White hated that journalists wanted to know about their private life,so they told them they were brother and sister when they were really man and wife, they married in 1996 and divorced in 2000.
Seven Nation Army has the most acclaimed guitar riff this Century according to several music critics.Jack White had developed it a full year before addinglyrics.
After initially saving the riff in case he was ever asked to create a James Bond theme,he decided to incorporate it into a song for the White Stripes, believing it highly unlikely Bond’s people would come knocking.
The lyrics deal with The White Stripes rising popularity and the negatives that come with it.Jack White said ‘The songs about gossip,it’s about me,Meg and the people we are dating.’
‘Don’t want to hear about it,every single one’s got a story to tell.’

326-? and the Mysterians-96 Tears.
1966-Number 37 single.
Best Bit-At 0.04.In the wonderful tapestry of understanding the development of music and artists influencing the next generation this band and song play a major part,of that there is no question.
The Mysterians were formed in 1962 in Michigan,The United States, they took their name from the 1957 science fiction film ‘The Mysterians.’They were soon joined by songwriter and lead singer Rudy Martinez who goes by the stage name of Question Mark.
Their early influences came from Surf Music, acts such as Link Wray and Duanne Eddy and retrospectively they were coined as pioneers of what was to become known as ‘Garage Rock,’ a raw and energetic style of Rock ‘N’ Roll perceived to be played by young amateurs who rehearsed in the family garage.
In 1971 the Rock critic Dave Marsh coined the term ‘Punk Rock’ while writing an article about ‘Question Mark’ for ‘Creem Magazine.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
328-Chicago-If You Leave Me Now.
1976-Number 1 single.
Best Bit-At 1.36.Can you guess where all the band members met and formed?
Chicago are an American Rock band formed in Chicago,Illinois in 1968 calling themselves the Chicago Transit Authority, they described their early sound as a ‘Rock and Roll band with horns'(see also best songs 631.)
They achieved great success, but even greater things came with the change of style initiated with the release of this song, unsurprisingly their record company pressed them to record more songs in this ‘Soft Rock’,ballad style.
The songs writer and lead singer was one of the bands founding members Peter Cetera. Like Phil Collins with Genesis or Rod Stewart with The Faces, Cetera had a solo career while still being a part of Chicago.
He has achieved three Billboard Number 1’s,with this song,’The Glory Of Love'(1986) and ‘The Next Time I Fall,'(also 1986) a duet with Amy Grant.
‘A love like ours is love that’s hard to find, how could we let it slip away.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
329-The KLF featuring Tammy Wynette-Justified & Ancient(Stand by The JAMs.)
1991-Number 2 single.
Best Bit-At 0.27.The Tammy Wynette Country classic ‘Stand By Your Jam.’
The KLF were formed in 1987 by Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty. Their first major commercial success together came in 1988 when using the name The Timelords they achieved a UK Number 1 with Doctorin’ The Tardis.
Justified & Ancient was the last official release from the duo and was only kept off the Number 1 spot by the re-release of Bohemian Rhapsody.
This was perhaps the most unusual match-up in Pop music history where the critically acclaimed House,Techno and Hip-Hop act The KLF teamed with the ‘First Lady of Country Music’ Tammy Wynette whose previous biggest success in the UK had been with the 1975 UK Number 1 song Stand By Your Man.
‘They called me up in Tennessee they said Tammy stand by the JAMs.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
330-Frankie Smith-Double Dutch Bus.
1981-Has never charted in the UK.
Best Bit-At 1.38.The ‘slang’ language used in this song would become a major influence in Hip-Hop,with artists such as Snoop Dogg and Jay-Z being influenced.
Old School Hip-Hop developed in New York but by the early 1980’s was spreading across America.
Frankie Smith was born in Pennsylvania,Philadelphia in 1953 and it was while working as a song writer at Philadelphia International Records he met the co-writer of this song Bill Bloom.
Like many early Rap songs ‘Double Dutch Bus’ tells a fancy-full story, where Smith Raps about a ‘Funky’ bus where everybody is having a party,he misses the bus and has to walk 15 blocks to get to work, while walking he sees girls playing Double Dutch,a game where you have to jump over ropes in rhythm to keep going.
Some of the slang lyrics of this song have become ingrained in Hip-Hop language.

331-The Shangri-Las-Leader Of The Pack.
1965-Number 11 single.When re-issued it reached Number 3 in 1972 and again Number 7 in 1976.
Best Bit-At 2.48.The song is a ‘Teenage tragedy song,’ also known as ‘Tear Jerkers,’Death Discs,’or ‘Splatter Platters.’
The Shangri-Las formed at high school in Queens,New York City in 1963.The all girl group were sisters Mary and Betty Weiss and identical twins Marguerite and Mary Ganser. ‘Leader Of The Pack’ was written by George Morton and the legendary song writing team of Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich, though Morton claimed to have only added Barry and Greenwich to the songwriting credits for business reasons,Greenwich has questioned Morton’s recollection.
