The Shangri-Las formed at high school in Queens,New York City in 1963.The all girl group were sisters Mary and Betty Weiss and identical twins Marguerite and Mary Ganser. Their streetwise image and songs contrasted with other girl groups of the 1960’s dealing with many taboo subjects of the time. They are cited as an influence by 1970’s Punk era acts such as Blondie and The New York Dolls.
‘Leader Of The Pack’ was written by George Morton and the legendary song writing team of Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich, though Morton claimed to have only added Barry and Greenwich to the songwriting credits for business reasons,Greenwich has questioned Morton’s recollection.
