‘Be My Baby’ is considered to be Phil Spector’s(see also best songs 782-737 and 192) most critically acclaimed work,it was one of the first songs to use his groundbreaking ‘Wall of Sound’ production.It was written by Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich(see also best songs 820-331-262 and 192) who were married at the time,as often was the case Spector would insist on his name being added to the writing credits.
The Ronettes were a girl group from New York City consisting of the sisters Veronica Bennett,(later known as Ronnie Spector) Estelle Bennett(1941-2009) and their cousin Nedra Talley,they were active as a group until 1968.The lead vocal on the song was provided by Ronnie who would go on to marry Phil Spector in 1968,they divorced in 1974.
Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys has always stated this song was his favourite,he has said,’This is a special one for me,what a great sound,boy,first heard this on the car radio and I had to pull off the road,I couldn’t believe it.The chorus blew me away,the strings are the melody of love.It has the promise to make the world better.,’
