Sheldon Silverstein(September 25,1930-May 10,1999) was an American writer known for his cartoons, songs and children’s books.
25 Minutes To Go was written and first performed by Silverstein for his 1962 Album ‘Inside Folk Songs.’It is about a man awaiting execution by hanging. Each verse consists of two lines of which the first is humorous or poignant and the second line is a minute by minute countdown, you could say it is ‘gallows humour’ in it’s purest sense.
Other notable songs written by Silverstein include ‘A Boy Named Sue’ made famous by Johnny Cash and two hits for Dr. Hook,’The Cover Of The Rolling Stone’ and ‘Sylvia’s Mother.’
The most well known cover of the song is by Johnny Cash(see also best songs 857 and 428) who first recorded it for his 1965 Album ‘Sings The Ballads Of The True West.’the best version of the song(only in my opinion) though appears on the Johnny Cash live Album ‘At Folsom Prison’ from 1968.
‘I can see the buzzards,I can hear the crows,1 more minute to go, and now I’m swingin’ and here I go-o-o-o-o-o!
