‘Both Sides Now’ was written around 1966 by Canadian singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell(see also best songs 637 and 558,) she was inspired to write the song after reading the 1959 novel by Saul Bellow,’Henderson The Rain King.’It first appeared on her Album ‘Joni Mitchell Live at the Second Fret 1966.’
The first commercially released version was this one from American Folk singer Judy Collins,appearing on her 1967 Album ‘Wildflowers.’It became a Billboard hit single in 1968 and charted in the UK in 1970.
The song is about seeing things from a different perspective as you grow from a child into an adult.It also says that not only people you know change over time,but you do yourself as well.
