Huddie William Ledbetter (January 20th,1888-December 6,1949) was an American Folk and Blues musician, noted for his strong vocals and his playing of the twelve-string guitar. He was also a songwriter whose subject matter included, women, liquor, prison life, and racism.
‘Where Did You Sleep Last Night’ or as it is also known ‘In The Pines’ is a traditional American Folk song probably written around 1870,by an unknown source. It originally had just one verse and down the years more lyrics have been added as it has been passed on from one generation to another.
The only time the song has appeared in the UK top 40 was in 1964 when a band from Blackburn,Lancashire, called The Four Pennies took their version called ‘Black Girl’ to Number 20.The most famous modern day version is the 1993 MTV Unplugged recording by Kurt Cobain which brought the song to the attention of a whole new generation.
‘Tell me where did you sleep last night,in the pines,in the pines.’
