The band Bread were formed in 1968 by David Gates,Jimmy Griffin and Robb Royer. They split in 1973,but re-united again in 1976 and then once more in 1996.One of the reasons for the initial split was that Griffin who contributed many songs to the band was being constantly overlooked by their record label who would only release songs penned by Gates as singles.In fact all twelve Billboard hits had been written by Gates.
Although Bread never achieved a UK Number 1,David Gates wrote ‘If” a 1975 Number 1 for Telly Savalas and ‘Everything I Own’ the 1974 Number 1 for Reggae singer Ken Boothe and later covered in a similar style and also reaching Number 1 for Boy George in 1987.
