In the 1930s and 1940s the real pop stars were the bandleaders and they hired vocalists, sometimes on long contracts to work for them.In 1945 the BBC launched a public songwriting competition and this song was the winner. It was written by Eily Beadell and Nell Tollerton who were two middle-aged women. On sales of sheet music the song became the second biggest seller of 1946.
