In the late 1950s George Clinton was a member of the ‘Doo-Wop’ vocal group The Parliaments.In 1967 they finally had a hit with ‘I Wanna Testify,’to capitalize Clinton formed a backing band for a tour.During a contractual dispute Clinton lost the rights to the name ‘The Parliaments,’he reformed his band under the name of ‘Funkadelic’ and as more musicians joined he formed a second group called ‘Parliament.’Clinton wrote and played in both groups during the 1970s.

Basshunter is Swedish born Jonas Erik Altberg,in 2006 he had a top 10 hit on the continent with a song called ‘Boten Anna’ sung in Swedish.Fellow Swede ‘Dj Mental Theo’s Bazzheadz’ re-wrote new English lyrics and Sebastian Westwood who is un-credited on the track provided the vocals,the song went on to top the UK chart for five consecutive weeks in January and February 2008.

Soundgarden are an American Rock band who formed in Seattle,Washington in 1984.They were one of the creators of a style of alternative rock that developed in Seattle called ‘Grunge,’along with contemporaries such as Nirvana and Alice In Chains.
Black Hole Sun was written by front man and co-founder of the band Chris Cornell (July 20 1964-May 18 2017.) Cornell stated that the title for the song came from something he heard on the news,he thought he heard the anchor say ‘black hole sun,’but he was really saying something else.Cornell started thinking about the phrase and decided to write a song around it,as he felt it was a thought provoking title.

Freddie Mercury(see also best songs 918) let his imagination run wild on this one.He wrote the song basing it on a fantasy world called Rhye that he had created with his sister,Kashmira.
Mercury and his sister were brought up on the African island of Zanzibar and educated in the ‘Zoroastrianism’ religion which was founded in Iran and these fueled Mercury’s flights of fancy.Other Queen songs featuring the mystery world of Rhye include ‘Lily Of The Valley’ and ‘My Fairy King.’

Lloyd Cole was 23 years old when he released his debut Album,’Rattlesnakes’ in 1984 to near universal critical acclaim.Perfect Skin was written in the basement of Glasgow Golf Club where Cole’s father worked.Cole described the songs on Rattlesnakes as ‘About the things people do when they are in love,’he said ‘After years of trying to deny it,I’m starting to realize that i basically write about myself.’

Best Bit-At 0.07.Ian Curtis’s cynical response to Neil Sedaka.
In 1975 The Captain and Tenille had an American Number 1 with the Neil Sedaka written ‘Love Will Keep Us Together’ and that songs title gave Ian Curtis the inspiration for this song.Ian Curtis wrote the lyrics at a horrendous time in his life when his marriage was breaking up.The song was released in April 1980 but didn’t chart,a month later,depressed over a broken marriage and suffering from epilepsy Ian Curtis hanged himself.The song was re-released in June 1980 and charted.The remaining three members of Joy Division went on to form New Order.(see best songs 885.)

The Vaccines are an English Indie Rock band formed in 2010 in West London by Justin Hayward-Young,Freddie Cowan,Arni Arnason and Pete Robertson.Together they have sold over 1million records worldwide but how much bigger would they have been if they had been born 40 years earlier as there sound is very much set in the late 1970s Punk and New Wave era.
