In 1936 a 22 year old singer from Baltimore by the name of Bill Kenny(1914-1978) joined the R&B vocal group The Ink Spots(see also best songs 702) who had already been performing as a quartet since 1934.
In 1938 Kenny introduced the group to a new format that he called ‘Top & Bottom.’This format called for the tenor,either Kenny or fellow band mate Deek Wilson to sing the lead for one chorus,followed by a chorus performed by bass singer Hoppy Jones reciting the lyrics rather than singing them,this was known as ‘Talking Bass.’
‘If I Didn’t Care’ was written by Jack Laurence(see also best songs 274) and gave The Ink Spots their first hit on Billboard peaking at Number 2,even so it didn’t get to Number 1 it has sold over 19 million copies making it the 10th best selling song of all time.
