After becoming the 1st song this decade to achieve 7 weeks at Number 1 Mark Ronson ft Bruno Mars with ‘Uptown Funk’ is finally outsold.

The new incumbent at Number 1 is Ellie Goulding with ‘Love Me like You Do’. This new single is featured on the soundtrack to the new film ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’, Goulding was born on 30th December 1986 and christened Elena Jane Goulding.  To date she has released 2 Albums, ‘Lights’ (2010) and ‘Halcyon’ (2012), in addition she has also released 14 singles as a solo artist. She now has had 12 top 40 singles and as a featured artist a further 3, ‘Love Me Like You Do’ gives her a 2nd Number 1 after ‘Burn topped’ the chart back in 2013.

Just the 3 new entries on the top 40 this week, the 2nd of them charting at Number 8 for Mike Magoo and Dragonette with ‘Outlines’. Mike Magoo is a Dutch Dj and music producer and Dragonette are a Canadian electronic group who formed back in 2005, they consist of singer songwriter Martina Sorbara, drummer Joel Stouffer and bassist and producer Dan Kurtz. In their native Canada their biggest success to date was back in 2012 with a track called ‘Let It Go’ which peaked at Number 23, up until this week’s new  top 10 single ‘Outlines ‘they were best known to UK audiences for being the featured artist on the Martin Solvieg hit ‘Hello’ (Number 13 in 2010.

The 3rd and final new entry this week is at Number 39 for Kodaline with ‘Honest’, Kodaline hail from Dublin and is an alternative Rock group. In their native Ireland they have already tasted much success with 2 of their songs going to Number 1, ‘Give Me A Minute’ back in 2007 and ‘High Hopes’ in 2013. High Hopes is also their most successful UK single to date peaking at Number 16, the current hit ‘Honest’ is the 3rd time they have now reached the top 40 as their song ‘Love Like This’ reached Number 22 in 2013.

Mark Ronson ft Bruno Mars with ‘Uptown Funk’ becomes the 1st song this decade to achieve 7 weeks at Number 1. Since the turn of the century only 4 other songs have achieved or surpassed this feat.  In 2005 Tony Christie ft Peter Kay with ‘Is This The Way To Amarillo’ (7 weeks ), Gnarls Barkley in 2006 with ‘Crazy’ (9 weeks), Rihanna ft Jay Z with ‘Umbrella’ (10 weeks) in 2007 and Leona Lewis with ‘Bleeding Love’ (7 weeks)in 2007.

The surprise package which is Hozier continues his slow climb to the top with ‘Take Me To Church’ climbing another place to Number 2. It is now in its 27th week on the top 40, Hozier whose real name is Andrew Hozier –Byrne was born on 17th march 1990 in Bray County Wicklow Ireland, the song is also currently Number 2 in America behind ‘Uptown Funk’.

There are 7 new entries  this week with the highest charting at Number 3 for Fergie with’ l.A.Love(La La)’.Fergie whose birth name was Stacey Ann Ferguson legally changed her name to Fergie Duhamel after marrying Josh Duhamel in 2009. Fergie is best known as the female member of The Black Eyed Peas the group she joined back in 2003, with the group she has achieved 16 top 40 singles. This is not the 1st time Fergie has tasted success as a solo artist, back in 2006 she released her debut Album ‘Dutchess’ which provided her with 3 top 10 singles the most successful being ‘Big Girls Don’t Cry’(Number 2-2007). Another notable achievement was singing as a featured artist on the David Guetta Number 1 from 2009 ‘Gettin Over You’.

The other new entry into the top 5 is at Number 5 for Kanye West ,Rihanna and Paul McCartney with ‘Four Five Seconds’, the song is the 1st single to be released from Rihannas as yet untitled 8t studio album to be released later on this year. West and McCartney are amongst the co writers of the song, McCartney doesn’t sing on the track but does play instruments. This is the 1st top 5 single for Paul McCartney since ‘We All Stand Together’ reached Number 3 in 1984.

In total there are 3 new songs inside this week’s top 10 and new in at Number 7 is Karen Harding with ‘Say Something’. Harding appeared in the 10th series of X-Factor but was eliminated at the boot camp stage, in 2014 she was approached by record producer MNEK and signed to Method records, this is her debut single.

New in at Number 13 is Hannah Wants and Chris Lorenzo with ‘Rhymes’, Wants and Lorenzo are both British producers who have teamed up for the track which features samples from both the Busta Rhymes song ‘Touch It’ and the Daft Punk song ‘Technologic’.

The new entry at Number 22 is for Maroon 5 with the 3rd single release from their 5th Album entitled ‘V’. The song is called ‘Sugar’ and is currently in the top 10 in America, this current track gives them their 16th UK top 40 single.

The new song to chart this week at Number 30 is from Selena Gomez with ‘The Heart Wants What It Wants’. It is a new song added to her greatest hits album from last year called ‘For You’, this is her 2nd top 40 UK hit following on from ‘Come And Get It’ (Number 8-2013).

The  final new entry this week is at Number 33 for The Weeknd with ‘Earned It’. The Weeknd was born Abel Tesfaye in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada on February 16th 1990. Tesfaye says he adopted his stage name after dropping out of school at the age of 17, he left one weekend and never came home. The spelling was modified to avoid copyright issues with a Canadian band already named The Weekend, this is his 1st charting single as main artist but he did chart as featured artist back in 2012 on the Drake song ‘Crew Love’ (Number 38),he is also featured artist on the current Number 11 single ‘Elastic Heart’ from Sia. ‘Earned It’ appears on the soundtrack of the film ‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ which also features tracks from Ellie Goulding, Beyonce, Frank Sinatra and The Rolling Stones amongst others.

It is the 4th week of the New Year and we remain starved of new music on the UK top 40 singles chart. This week there is only 1 new entry and in fact in the whole month of January there have been only 7 new entries.

Mark Ronson ft Bruno Mars with ‘Uptown Funk’ holds on to the Number 1 spot and now has achieved a 6th unconsequitive week at the top.  Ronsons LP ‘Uptown Special’ also holds the top spot on the Album chart. The last song to spend 6 weeks at Number 1 was ‘We Found Love’ from Rihanna ft Calvin Harris back in November 2011.The last song to spend 7 weeks at the top was ‘Bleeding Love’ from Leona Lewis during November and December 2007.

The only new entry this week is at Number 2 for Meghan Trainor who is no longer a one hit wonder. The follow up to ‘All About That Bass’ (4 weeks at Number 1 last year) is ‘Lips Are Movin’, as with ‘All About That Bass’ the song is co- written by Trainor and Kevin Kadish, Kadish also produced the track. The song has already peaked at Number 3 in Australia and Number 4 in America where it has sold over 1 million copies to date. Both songs feature on Trainors debut Album which is called ‘Title’.

Hozier holds on to the Number 3 spot with ‘Take Me to Church’ and Philip George drops 2 to Number 4 with ‘Wish You Were Mine’. Olly Murs ft Demi Lovato with ‘Up’ drops down 1 place to Number 5. Avicci whose song ‘The Nights’  was a new entry at Number 16 last week climbs 8 places, while last week’s other new entry from Sia with ‘Elastic Heart’ climbs 2 to 11. Echosmith with ‘Cool Kids’ continues to climb, it’s up another 11 places to Number 17 this week.

For the last 3 weeks in a row there have been  only 2 new entries on the top 40 singles chart, but the lack of competition should not take away anything from the achievements of the Mark Ronson ft Bruno Mars song ‘Uptown Funk’. Its sales for the time of year suggest it would be hard to shift from the top spot no matter what the competition was, the track records a 5th non consecutive week as the most popular song in the UK. The last song to achieve 5 weeks at Number 1 was ‘Blurred Lines’ from Robin Thicke back on 20th July 2013. On 19th November 2011 Rihanna ft Calvin Harris with ‘We Found Love’ managed 6 weeks at the top, that song holds the record of the longest stay at Number 1 so far this decade. Looking back to the previous decade and from the beginning of this century the song ‘Umbrella’ from Rihanna ft Jay Z back in 2007 is the longest stayer at Number 1 with a total of 10 weeks from May 26th to August 4th.

Just the 2 new songs entered  the top 40 this week, the highest which is at Number 13 for Sia ft The Weeknd and Diplo with ‘Elastic Heart’. Sia Kate Isobelle Furler is from Adelaide Australia and this is her 3rd hit single as lead artist. Her breakthrough hit was back in 2000 with the Number 10 single ‘Taken For Granted’ but it was with ‘Chandelier’ last year that she is best known, the song peaked at Number 6 and is still in the current top 40 at Number 19 in its 29th week. ‘Elastic Heart’ is from her 6th and current Album released last year called ‘10000 Forms Of Fear’. Sia has also charted 5 times as a featured artist, most notably providing the vocals on the David Guetta 2011 Number 1 ‘Titanium’.

The other new entry is at Number 16 for Avicci with ‘The Nights’, this is his 10th hit as lead artist and the song features uncredited  vocals from Nicholas Furlong who also co-wrote the song. Furlong has worked as a writer and producer with artists such as 5 Seconds Of Summer  and The Wanted, but this is his 1st UK charting song.

Little stirrings occurring on week 2 of this year’s new top 40 singles chart, on week 1 there were just the 2 new songs and it’s a repeat this week with 2 more.

The big news is that ‘Uptown Funk’ from Mark Ronson ft Bruno Mars holds on to the top spot, this now gives the song a 4th non consecutive week as the Number 1 equalling the feats of Meghan Trainor (’All About That Bass’) and Clean Bandit (‘Rather Be’ )from last year. Lasts weeks highest new entry from Philip George with ‘Wish You Were Mine’ holds on to the 2nd spot and Ed Sheeran with his former Number 1 ‘Thinking Out Loud’ stays at Number 3 for a 3rd consecutive week. Olly murs with ‘Up’ the 2nd single from his 4th Album ‘Never Been Better’ climbs 2 to 4 and Hozier with ‘Take Me To Church’ climbs 5 places to Number  5 a new peak in its 24th week on the top 40, it’s his debut chart single .

The highest new entry is at Number 7 for Tchami  ft Kaleem Taylor with ‘Promesses’, Tchami is the stage name of French Dj music producer Martin Bresso and this song is his 3rd single release. Up until this hit he has been best known for remixing other artists tracks most notably a 2013 remix of the Janet Jackson song ‘Go Deep’, he has also toured with the likes of Skrillex, Diplo and Dj Snake.

The other new entry is at Number 39 for Echosmith with ‘Cool Kids’, Echosmith are an American Indie/Rock band and this track originally appeared on the bands 2013 debut Album ‘Talking Dreams’. The song has tasted success elsewhere, in America  on Billboard it reached Number 13 and in Germany it peaked at Number 9, the songs biggest success’s to date have been in Australia, Denmark and Belgium where it has reached Number 6.Echosmith are all related as they are 3 brothers and a sister, Graham Sierota is the youngest at 16 years old and is the drummer, Jamie at 22 is the eldest and plays guitar, Noah is 19 and is the bass player and Sydney Grace who  is 18 lead vocalist and keyboard player. She has been compared to Ellie Goulding, Echosmith cite The Smiths as a major influence.

The final chart of the year is traditionally the quietest one and this year is no exception as there is only 1 new entry and 3 re-entries.

Now in its 3rd week since release the Mark Ronson, Bruno Mars collaboration ‘Uptown Funk’  re-takes the top spot, so now has 2 uncosequitive weeks at Number 1. It replaces the Ben Haenow song ‘Something I Need’ which is now in the 2nd spot, ex Number 1 ‘Thinking Out Loud’ from Ed Sheeran holds firm at 3 and ‘Blank Space’ from Taylor Swift climbs 3 places to Number 4. Olly Murs now has 2 singles in the top 10 as ‘Up’ drops 1 place to 5 and ‘Wrapped Up’ climbs 3 to Number 9.

This week’s only new entry is at Number 6 for Alesso featuring Tove La with Heroes (We Could Be)’the song’s lyrics are partially taken from David Bowies 1977 song ‘Heroes’. Bowies version told of a couple in love in the shadows of the Berlin wall, this new song tells of a couple interacting in the present day. Alesso is a Swedish dance music producer whose full name is Alessandro Lindblad, he is 23, and this is his 4th top 20 UK hit single. Tove La is also Swedish, her full name is Ebba Tove Elsa Nilsson and she is 27, her previous UK hit was earlier on this year when ‘Habits ( Stay High)’reached Number 6.

The 3 re-entries are at Number 36 for Canadian band Magic with their ex Number 1 from this year ‘Rude’, Shakin Stevens festive song ‘Merry Christmas Everyone’ which was the Xmas Number 1 of 1985 sneaks back in this week at Number 38 and Mr Probz with ‘Waves’ another former Number 1 from earlier on this year is back at 39.

In total in 2014 38 different songs topped the UK top 40 and 279 new tracks have entered the chart this year.

The most prestigious Number 1 of the year is the Christmas Number 1 and for the 6th time since its invention it is an X Factor winner’s song that tops the chart.

This year’s winner of the 11th series of the X Factor is 29 year old Ben Haenow who comes from Croyden ,England and the song chosen for him to sing is the One Republic Album track from their 2013 Album ‘Native’ called ‘Something I Need’. The song was never released as a single in the UK or America but was Number 1 in Poland, Number 5 in Austria and Number 6 in Australia last year, some of the lyrics of the original have been changed presumably to make Haenows version more family friendly. This song becomes the 38th different Number 1 single of 2014.

Dropping 1 place to Number 2 is Mark Ronson ft  Bruno Mars with ‘Uptown Funk’ and also down one to Number 3 is ‘Thinking Out Loud’ from Ed Sheeran. There are 4 new entries  this week and the 2nd highest is at Number 4 for Olly Murs ft Demi Lovato with the song ‘Up’, it is the 2nd single release from his 4th Album ‘Never Been Better’, the 1st release ‘Wrapped Up’ is still on the chart at Number 12. As well as being a singer Demi Lovato is also an American actress, she came to prominence in 2008 after appearing in the Disney Channel television film ‘Camp Rock’. In the UK she has charted 7 times, 5 as lead artist and twice this year as featured artist when coincidently she also reached Number 4 with The Vamps on their song ‘Somebody To You’.

The 3rd new entry on the Christmas chart is at Number 5 for The Wealdstone Raider with ‘Got No Fans’, The Wealdstone Raider whose real name is Gordon hill is an English internet celebrity who supports the football team Wealdstone FC. He first came to attention when a video of him heckling opposing supporters of Whitehawk FC  went viral, The Daily Mirror have got behind him in an attempt to get the Christmas Number 1, all profits from the single will go to charities including Great Ormond Street Hospital.

The final new entry this week is at Number 14 for Gorgon City ft Jennifer Hudson with ‘Go All Night’, this is the 4th single release from their debut Album ‘Sirens’ and also their 4th top 20 hit this year, ‘Ready For Love’ being the most successful (Number 4). Jennifer Hudson rose to prominence in 2004 as a finalist on the 3rd season of American Idol, in the UK she has had 3 hits as lead artist the most successful being ‘Spotlight’ (Number 11)in 2008.

‘Uptown Funk’ is the 37th different song to top the UK top 40 this year. Mark Ronson is credited as lead artist on the track and Bruno Mars as featured artist, they both helped co write the track, Ronson also produced it and Mars played drums as well as singing lead vocals. Ronson is one of the world’s most respected record producers who always uses guest artists on all of his single releases, since his 1st hit ‘Ooh Wee’ in 2003 (Number 15) he has now gone on to have a further 7 top 40 singles. Previous to ‘Uptown Funk’ his best known collaboration was with Amy Winehouse on the 2007 Number 2 song ‘Valerie’, Bruno Mars whose real name is Peter Gene Hernandez hits Number 1 for the 5th time, 3 times as lead artist and now twice as featured artist.

In total this week there are 4 new entries and 2 re-entries, with the 2nd highest new song entering at Number 5 for Oliver Heldens featuring Kstewart with ‘Last All Night (Koala)’.Heldens is a 19 year old producer from the Netherlands who had the Number 1 single ‘Gecko (Overdrive) earlier on this year, the song has also been a top 30 hit in Belgium and his home country Holland.

The other song to enter this week’s top 20 is at Number 17 for Bring Me the Horizon with ‘Drown’. They are a Rock/Metal band from Sheffield and formed back in 2004, over the course of their 4 Album releases their sound has mellowed to what would now be described as commercial Rock. ‘Drown ‘will not appear on the forth coming new Album ‘Sempiternal’ which could explain the reason why the song  has given them a 1st ever top 40 song.

The 4th  and final new entry this week is at Number 21 for Fifth Harmony with ‘Boss’, the group consists of 5 females who all auditioned and failed to progress in the 2012 American X Factor. Simon Cowell brought them together as a quintet and they continued in that year’s competition in the groups category eventually finishing 3rd overall. They are yet to have a top 40 single on Billboard and this is their debut UK hit.

There are two re-entries this week’ Ed Sheeran re-climbs 5 places to Number 39 with’ Sing’ and Wizzard climb 17 to Number  35 with their Festive classic ‘I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday’. This is the 8th time the song has now been a hit, it peaked at Number 4 on its 1st release back in 1973.

Ed Sheeran returns to the top of the chart for a 2nd time with his song ‘Thinking Out Loud’ this week. It is already a record breaker in that no other song has ever entered the top 40 before and taken 19 weeks to get to Number 1 a feat it achieved on November 6th and now a full 5 weeks later it goes back to the top. It was the 3rd single released from his 2nd studio Album ‘X’ which is also the biggest selling Album of this year so far.

In total there are 4 new entries this week with the highest being at Number 2 for Union J with ‘You Got It All’. Union J were originally a trio consisting of Josh Cuthbert ,Jaymi Hensley and JJ Hamblett who auditioned for X Factor in 2012, George Shelley also auditioned as a solo artist but was persuaded to join the group, together they went on to finish 4th in that years competition. This current hit is their highest chart placing to date they have had 3 previous top 10 singles.

The other song to enter the top 10 is at Number 7 for Blonde featuring Melissa Steel with ‘I Loved You’. Blonde is a British duo who are tasting chart success for the first time, Bradford born Melissa Steel has now appeared on the top 40 4 times this year as lead artist, on her Number 10 hit ‘Kisses For Breakfast’ and as featured artist on the Kove song ‘Way We Are’ (Number 30) and the Krishane song ‘Drunk And Incapable (Number 27).

New in at Number 16 is Ella Henderson with the 3rd hit from her debut Album ‘Chapter One’, the song is called ‘Yours’, the previous 2 songs ‘Ghost’ and ‘Glow’ peaked at Number 1 and Number 7 respectively. Henderson was born Gabriella Michelle Ella Henderson on 12th January 1996 and finished 6th on the 9th series of X factor in 2012.

Ed Sheerans chart dominance looks set to continue, not only has he this week’s Number 1 single he also is at Number 30 with ‘Don’t’ which is now in its 24th charting week and he also has this week’s final new entry which is at Number 38 with the song ‘Make It Rain’. The track has been specially recorded to feature in the 7th and final series of the American television drama ‘Sons of Anarchy’.

Also this week there are 3 re-entries which all keep popping up at this time of year. Back with us at Number 17 is Mariah Carey with ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’, it was originally the Xmas Number 2 single of 1994 beaten to the top spot by East 17 with ‘Stay Another Day’. The song has gone on to be Mariah Careys most successful single selling to date in excess of 14 million copies worldwide, this is the 10th different year it has now charted. One place lower at Number 18 we welcome back another old friend in the form of The Pogues featuring Kirsty MacColl with ‘Fairytale of New York’, the song was the Xmas Number 2 single of 1987 beaten to the top that year by the Pet Shop Boys with their version of ‘Always on My Mind’. The Pogues return Fairytale to the chart for the 11th time, it is the most played xmas song of the 21st century. The xmas hatrick is completed by Wham new in at Number 39 with ‘Last Christmas’, this song was the xmas Number 2 of 1984 beaten to the top spot that year by the original Band Aid song ‘Do They Know Its Christmas’ which George Michael also appeared on. The song ‘Last Christmas’ was a double a side in its original format with ‘Everything She Wants’ on the flip side, it is the biggest selling UK single to have never got to Number 1.

Another bumper week for new entries with 9 brand new songs and one re-entry on this the 5th last chart of 2014.

There is a brand new Number 1 for the 36th time this year as Take That record what is there 12th Number 1 single since they first entered the chart 23 years ago when their 2nd single release ‘Promises’ peaked at Number 38. They now have a total of 26 top 40 singles, this new song is called ‘These Days’ and is taken from their new Album ‘3’.

Band Aid slip down one place to Number 2 and Olly Murs with ‘Wrapped Up’ holds steady at 3. The second highest new entry is at Number 7 for Labrinth with ‘Jealous’, this is the 2nd song released from his 2nd Album called ‘Take Me To The Truth’, the previous single ‘Let It Be’ peaked at Number 11.

The 3rd new entry is at Number 12 for Mcbusted with ‘Air Guitar’, Mcbusted is a collaboration of two groups Mcfly and Busted. The only original member of either group not to be part of Mcbusted is Busted singer Charlie Simpson who has chosen to pursue a solo career, on their own Mcfly have had 21 top 40 singles and Busted have had 8 all of which peaked inside the top 3.

New in at Number 14 is James Newton Howard with  ‘The Hanging Tree’, the song is taken from the motion picture ‘The Hunger Games,Mockinjay-Part 1’. The vocals on the song are provided by academy award winning actress Jennifer Laurence.

The final new entry into the top 20 is at Number 18 for James Bay with ‘Hold Back the River’. Bay is an English singer songwriter from Hitchen Hertfordshire, this is his 2nd single release, his debut ‘Let It Go’ peaked at Number 62 earlier on this year.

The 6th new song to enter the chart is at Number 22 for Years and Years with ‘Desire’, they are Olly Alexander, Mikey Goldsworthy and Emre Turkman. They have been together since their formation in 2010, this is their 1st chart entry. Alexander has tasted chart success previously having sung lead vocals on The Magicians Number 7 single from earlier on this year called ‘Sunlight’.

David Guetta now has 2 songs in this week’s top 40 as ‘What I Did For Love’ enters at Number 23, his other current charting song is ‘Dangerous’ at Number 9, ‘What I Did For Love’ is the 6th single from his current Album ‘Listen’, vocals on the track are provided by Emeli Sandi who has now charted 8 times as a featured artist.

Canadian singer songwriter Kiesa Rae Ellestad better known by her stage name Kiesza charts for the 3rd time this year this time with ‘No Enemiesz’ at Number 30, her big success earlier on this year was the Number 1 ‘Hideaway’, the other hit ‘Giant In My Heart’ reached Number 4…

Ex Number 1 single ‘Am I Wrong’ from Nico And Vinz is the re-entry at Number 33, it has now been on the top 100 for 22 weeks. The final new entry is at Number 36 for Beyonce with ‘7/11’, it is one of  2 new tracks added to Beyonces self titled latest Album which is now called ‘The Platinum Edition’’the other new song is called ‘Ring Off’.
