THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
428-Johnny Cash-San Quentin.
1969-Has never been released as a single in the UK.
Best Bit-At 2.21.Johnny Cash playing to a captive audience.
In total over the course of his career Johnny Cash released four live Albums recorded in prisons.’At Folsom Prison’ from 1968 and ‘At San Quentin’ from 1969 are the two biggest selling live Albums of all time.
In 1968 Cash(see also best songs 857) realised that his career needed a boost,he had already played several ‘prison concerts’ since the late 1950’s and his idea to record a live Album and have the concert recorded paid off.He had written to both the Folsom and San Quentin prisons and because Folsom were the first to respond, they held the first concert.
‘San Quentin what good do you think you do,do you think I’ll be different when your through.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
431-Leadbelly-Where Did You Sleep Last Night.
1944-Did not chart. There was no UK chart until 1952.
Best Bit-At 2.31.In the development of popular music Leadbelly is an important piece in the jigsaw puzzle.
Huddie William Ledbetter (January 20th,1888-December 6,1949) was an American Folk and Blues musician, noted for his strong vocals and his playing of the twelve-string guitar. He was also a songwriter whose subject matter included, women, liquor, prison life, and racism.
‘Where Did You Sleep Last Night’ or as it is also known ‘In The Pines’ is a traditional American Folk song probably written around 1870,by an unknown source. It originally had just one verse and down the years more lyrics have been added as it has been passed on from one generation to another.
The only time the song has appeared in the UK top 40 was in 1964 when a band from Blackburn,Lancashire, called The Four Pennies took their version called ‘Black Girl’ to Number 20.The most famous modern day version is the 1993 MTV Unplugged recording by Kurt Cobain which brought the song to the attention of a whole new generation.
‘Tell me where did you sleep last night,in the pines,in the pines.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
434-Procol Harum-A Whiter Shade Of Pale.
1967-Number 1 single.
Best Bit-At 1.17. The songs title has become so ingrained in people’s consciousness that it has almost become a cliche.
At the time of writing this song is still one of the top 40 best selling singles worldwide of all time with sales in excess of 10 million copy’s.It is also recognised by ‘Phonographic Performance Limited’ as the most played record by British Broadcasting in the last 70 years.
The music was co-written by Gary Brooker and Matthew Fisher, with the lyrics provided by Keith Reid all of whom were members of Procol Harum.
One of the reasons for the songs enduring popularity is it’s unusual lyrics.Keith Reid has said he was at a party and he heard someone saying to a woman ‘You’ve turned a whiter shade of pale,’and the phrase stuck in his mind.Of the song he said, ‘I was trying to conjure a mood as much as tell a straightforward, girl leaves boy story.’
‘We skipped a light fandango turned cartwheels ‘cross the floor I was feeling kinda seasick the crowd called out for more.’
