THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
16-Motorhead-Ace of Spades.
1980-Number 15 single. With sales of downloads in 2016, it peaked at Number 13.
Best Bit-At 2.33. If you asked a Punk Rock fan and a Heavy Metal fan what they had in common, it would probably be an appreciation of this song.
By 1980 Punk Rock had thrown all the best music it had at us and then ‘Ace of Spades’ came along, with all the raw energy of Punk, but essentially very much in the Heavy Metal genre, but with a twist. ‘Ace of Spades’ was different it was faster and louder and helped create a new genre of music that would become ‘Speed Metal,’ influencing the next generation of bands such as Iron Maiden and Saxon.
Motorhead were formed in 1975 by the bands one constant Ian ‘Lemmy’ Kilmister (1945-2015,) (see also best songs 577.) Up until 2015 when the band disbanded because of the death of ‘Lemmy’ there had been ten different group members throughout the years, though the classic line up was ‘Lemmy,’ ‘Phil ‘Philthy Animal’ Taylor (1954-2015) and ‘Fast’ Eddie Clarke (1950-2018.)
‘Ace of Spades’ is a song about gambling and it’s risks, Lemmy recalled, ‘Writing it was a word exercise on gambling, all the cliches.’
I personally see the gambling references as a metaphor for a reckless lifestyle, fuelled by drugs and alcohol. He knows he is gambling with his life and eventually will be dealt the ‘Ace of Spades,’ (the card of death.)
‘But that’s the way I like it baby, I don’t wanna live forever.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
17-Sugarhill Gang-Rapper’s Delight.
1979-Number 3 single.
Best Bit-At 2.20.This is ‘Old-school hip-hop,’ there was no bad language to try to make you sound cool, there was no derogatory words spoken about women, there was no use of the ‘N’ word, there was no homophobia, and you could hear the lyrics, there was no mumbling.
The original three members of the Sugarhill Gang were Michael ‘Wonder Mike’ Wright, Henry ‘Big Bank Hank’ Jackson (1956-2014,) and Guy ‘Master Gee’ O’Brien, they were discovered by Joey Robinson Jr. (1962-2015) the son of Sylvia Robinson (1935-2011) the co-founder of ‘Sugarhill Records.’
Rap had been performed in and around New York City since the early 1970’s but record labels didn’t see it as something which would sell in recorded form to the masses, it was seen as a fad only performed live. It was Sylvia Robinson (see also best songs 597-523-466-290 and 87) later to become dubbed as ‘The Mother of Hip-Hop’ who had the foresight, the song became the first ever Rap song to chart on Billboard and in the UK.
‘Rapper’s Delight samples the Disco song by ‘Chic’ called ‘Good Times’ (see also best songs 175,),’ this was written by Nile Rogers and Bernie Edwards (1952-1996,) after suing Sugarhill Records they are now added as the songs co-writers and receive royalties.
On a personal note, my one claim to fame is having seen the Sugarhill Gang perform this song live in Leeds in 1980.
‘I said a hip hop the hippie to the hippie, the hip hip a hop and you don’t stop a rock it.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
18-Bobby Gentry-Ode to Billie Joe.
1967-Number 13 single.
Best Bit-At 4.22.Sometimes it’s more fun if the reason why it happened always remains a mystery, rather than find out and have all the mystique removed.
‘Ode to Billie Joe’ tells the story of Billie Joe McAllister who commits suicide by jumping off the Tallahatchie Bridge in Money, Mississippi. The songs narrator had been observed on the bridge previously with McAllister, and they had been seen throwing something in to the water below.
These two incidents captured the imagination of the general public so much to the extent that ‘Warner Bros.’ commissioned the author Herman Raucher to expand and adapt the story as a novel and screenplay in 1976. Gentry when asked for input was asked why McAllister committed suicide, she answered by saying she didn’t know, which left Raucher free to write his own adaption. In the film and the book McAllister has a homosexual encounter which he enjoyed, but later was overcome with guilt. It is also revealed that it was a rag doll that the couple threw from the bridge in to the water, signifying the narrators transformation from a child in to an adult.
Booby Gentry(see also best songs 740) has been quoted as saying that most people miss the really important messages in the song. She has said’ The song revolves around the nonchalant way the family talks about the suicide, the song is a study in unconscious cruelty. Second, the obvious gap between the girl and her mother is shown when both women experience a common loss (first Billie Joe and later, Papa,) and yet Mama and the girl are unable to recognise their mutual loss or share their grief.’
‘And Papa said to Mama as he passed around the black eyed peas, well Billy Joe never had a lick of sense, pass the biscuits please.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
19-Frankie Goes to Hollywood-Two Tribes.
1984-Number 1 single.
Best Bit-At 4.12.The late Patrick Allen (1927-2006) frightened the life out of us with his talk of imminent nuclear destruction, before jumping back in to his helicopter to sell some more Barratt Homes.
Frankie Goes to Hollywood were formed in Liverpool in 1980 by Holly Johnson (vocals,) Paul Rutherford (vocals,) Peter Gill (drums,) Mark O’Toole (bass guitar) and Brian Nash (guitar,) they took their name from a headline in ‘The New Yorker’ magazine which read ‘Frankie Goes Hollywood,’ next to a photograph of Frank Sinatra.
‘Two Tribes’ had been written as far back as 1982, but it wasn’t until legendary music producer Trevor Horn signed ‘FGTH’ to his ‘ZTT’ record label and remixed the song that it became a hit. The track was released in six different mixes but the two to concentrate on are the ‘Annihilation Mix’ and the ‘Carnage Mix,’ I have chosen to post the ‘Carnage Mix,’ but both come highly recommended.
In the early 1980’s tensions ran very high between The United States and the Soviet Union, and people were very worried of a potential Nuclear War. The songs famous video was directed by Kevin Godley and Lol Creme, it depicts a wrestling match between look-a-likes President Reagan, and then Soviet leader Konstantin Chernenko.
‘Two Tribes’ spent nine weeks at Number 1 in the UK in 1984, it was the longest stay at the top of the charts by any song in the whole of the 1980’s.

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
20-John Lennon-Imagine.
1971-It was not released as a single in the UK until 1975 when it reached Number 6. After Lennon’s assassination in 1980 the song peaked at Number 1 and in 1999 when re-released it reached Number 3.
Best Bit-At 0.40.Lennon’s wish is for everyone to live together in peace, to break free of the superstitions that control our thought process, to live for today, and not to prepare for something that there is no proof exists, that you may be rewarded with tomorrow. He also tells us to not hoard things, but share them out equally. The only problem with this is that human beings will always find something to fight about, if everyone was the same, then the person wearing red shoes would start an argument with the person wearing blue shoes.
John Lennon (see also best songs 927-599-473-456-319-238-218-168-141 and 80) took the sole songwriter credit, but later stated that his wife Yoko Ono should have been credited as well as he got the initial idea for the lyrics from her 1964 book ‘Grapefruit’ which includes lines such as ‘Imagine the sky crying,’ and Imagine you’re a cloud,’ in 2017 Ono’s name was added to the songs writing credits.
‘Imagine’ was produced by Phil Spector (see also best songs 782-737-192 and 127) as was it’s parent Album of the same name. Lennon wrote the song on a brown Steinway upright piano, in 2000 George Michael paid over $2 million for the piano and placed it in the Beatles museum in Liverpool.
‘Imagine there’s no countries, it isn’t hard to do, nothing to kill or die for, and no religion too.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
21-Blur-Song 2.
1997-Number 2 single.
Best Bit-At 0.15.This is the 2nd track on the ‘Blur’ Album, its the 2nd track on the greatest hits,it got to Number 2 in the UK, and it lasts 2 minutes, spooky or what?….No,not really.
The song came about after the band were messing about with new ideas in the studio. The groups lead guitarist Graham Coxon at that time was a big fan of American alternative Rock bands such as Pavement and Sonic Youth and it was he who came up with the songs intro. The bands lead singer Damon Albarn was not as big a fan and made up any old lyrics as a guide for the song. In a way this song has a satisfactory ending for both Coxon and Albarn, as Coxon got his wish to record a classic American sounding Rock song, and Albarn could poke fun at the genre with nonsensical lyrics.
Blur (see also best songs 256) maybe one of the biggest bands to have ever come out of the UK, but in America they remain obscure, with this song being their only success in the States from being played on Alternative Rock and College Radio stations. The song is often referred to as the ‘Whoo-Hoo’ song.
‘I got my head checked by a jumbo jet, it wasn’t easy but nothing is no.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
22-Meat Loaf-Bat Out of Hell.
1977- It wasn’t released as a single until 1979 when reaching Number 15.The song was re-released in 1993 and peaked at Number 8.
Best Bit-At 6.52.The songs writer Jim Steinman was a big fan of the early 1960’s ‘death discs’ also known as ‘teenage tragedy songs’ such as ‘Leader of the Pack’ by the Shangri-Las (see also best songs 331) and ‘Tell Laura I Love Her’ from Ray Peterson. Steinman wanted to write the ‘most extreme crash song of all time.’
This song along with ‘Heaven Can Wait’ and ‘All Revved Up with No Place To Go’ originally featured in Steinman’s ‘Peter Pan’ inspired 1977 musical ‘Neverland.’ Steinman and Meat Loaf who were touring with the ‘National Lampoon’ show felt they had three exceptional songs and wanted to develop them with potentially four more in to an Album. The Album of course came to fruition and was called ‘Bat Out of Hell,’ to date it has sold in excess of 43 million copies worldwide, in the UK it has spent 522 weeks on the Album chart, the second longest chart run of any studio Album (see also best songs 90.)
The song tells the story of someone who feels his life it going nowhere and only feels alive when riding their motorbike at highly dangerous speeds. He knows the dangers of what he is doing but the thrill is too great. Steinman achieved his ambition of writing the greatest ‘crash song’ when the motorbike and rider are, ‘down in the bottom of a pit in the blazing sun.’
‘Oh baby you’re the only thing in this whole world that’s pure and good and right.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
23-Beyonce featuring Jay-Z-Crazy in Love.
2003-Number 1 single.
Best Bit-At 0.01.When Beyonce was first offered the song she said, ‘No one uses horn riffs in the 21st Century.’
The horn riff in question was a sample from a 1970 song by the Soul group The Chi-Lites called ‘Are You My Woman (Tell Me So’) which had only peaked at Number 72 on Billboard, the song was written by Eugene Record (1940-2005) of the Chi-Lites and therefore he receives songwriting credits on Crazy in Love.
The brains behind developing the sample in to this song belong to songwriter and music producer Rich Harrison, he also wrote some of the lyrics and played all the instruments. The ‘bridge’ was written by Beyonce (see also best songs 800) who was inspired by looking at herself in the mirror.as she was not wearing matching clothes and her hair was untidy, she kept saying ‘I look so crazy right now.’ The songs rap provided by American Rapper Jay-Z was an afterthought and not added until the track was complete, it is said that Jay-Z improvised his verse in about ten minutes (see also best songs 636 and 477.)
‘Crazy in Love’ is taken from Beyonce’s debut solo Album ‘Dangerously In Love’ and put to bed the worry that her solo career wouldn’t match the success that she had enjoyed with her previous group Destiny’s Child.
‘Got me looking so crazy right now, your love’s got me looking so crazy right now.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
24-Tears for Fears-Sowing the Seeds of Love.
1989-Number 5 single.
Best Bit-At 3.08.Many songs have a strong Beatles influence, this ones the best.
Tears for Fears (see also best songs 640) were formed in Bath, England, in 1981 by Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, they split in 1991, but reformed in 2000. Although they never achieved a UK Number 1 single they have had two on Billboard with ‘Shout,’ and ‘Everybody Wants to Rule the World.’
‘Sowing the Seeds of Love’ is taken from their third studio Album ‘The Seeds of Love,’ the Album also went to Number 1 on Billboard, and Number 2 in the UK.
‘Sowing the Seeds of Love’ is a political song, ‘Politician granny with your high ideals’ was taking a swipe at the then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, but the lyrics also urge us to actively engage in politics, and not just settle for what we are told. Another memorable line from the song is ‘Kick out the Style bring back The Jam,’ this refers to Paul Weller, whose songs with The Jam often carried a political message, but his lyrics with his new band The Style Council were often about love and romance.
The songs message is that we should be actively doing something about problems. We should be sowing the seeds of love, creating a better world, not just talking about it.
‘The love train rides from coast to coast, DJ’s the man we love the most.’
