Deee-Lite were the trio of Lady Miss Kier (born Kierin Kirby,) Supa DJ Dmitry (born Dmitry Brill,) and DJ Towa Tel ( born Dong-hwa Chung.) They were active between 1986-1996, releasing three studio Albums, they took inspiration for their name from the Cole Porter song ‘It’s De-Lovely,’ which is mentioned in this song, in the line,’Just de-lovely and delicious.’

‘Groove Is in the Heart’ has several guest artists, and also several samples. The Rap is performed by Q-Tip, of A Tribe Called Quest, guest vocals, and the bass are provided by Bootsy Collins, and the horn section is Fred Wesley, and Maceo Parker. There are several samples, most notably the bass-line from the Herbie Hancock song ‘Bring Down the Birds,’ Hancock receives songwriting credits.Another sample is from a song called ‘Get Up’ by Vernon Burch, which provides the songs drum track.

The song reached Number 2 in the UK in September 1990, with the compilers admitting that the song, and the previous weeks Number 1, ‘The Joker’ by the Steve Miller Band, had sold approximately the same during the previous week, and therefore couldn’t be split, the rules which dated back to the 1980’s said that the song which had increased it’s sales the most from the previous week, would be placed higher,

‘The chills that you spill up my back, keep me filled with satisfaction, when we’re done.’
