Best Bit-At 1.25.It is fitting that the greatest Christmas song in the world ever should be written and sung by Shane MacGowan, whose Birthday is on Christmas Day.
Since the introduction of downloads it has made it possible for any song to re-enter the UK chart at anytime. ‘Fairytale of New York’ has charted every December since 2005, and in total has been a hit in seventeen separate years, the song is also the most broadcast Christmas song of the 21st Century.
‘Fairytale of New York’ was co-written by MacGowan and fellow Pogues band member Jem Finer, who presented MacGowan with two songs he had written of which neither he was fully satisfied with, MacGowen tweaked them both and ‘Fairytale’ was born (see also best songs 283.)
The songs producer was Steve Lillywhite who asked his then wife Kirsty MacColl to record the female part for the tracks demo, she fit the song perfectly and was asked to be the co-singer. MacColl died in Cozumel, Mexico in the year 2000 after being hit by a speeding boat while diving in a designated area that watercraft were restricted from entering, she was 41.
‘Fairytale of New York’ is a song of regret, the narrator is sat in the ‘drunk tank’ reminiscing of missed opportunities.The hopes and dreams he shared with his partner have now long gone because of his alcoholism and her drug addiction.The lyrics suggest to me that they still care deeply for each other.
‘Happy Christmas your arse, I pray God it’s our last.’
