THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
37-Public Enemy-Welcome to the Terrordome.
1990-Number 18 single.
Best Bit-At 0.05.The ‘Terrordome’ is the name given by Public Enemy to the arrival of the new decade, the 1990’s.
Public Enemy(see also best songs 578) are an American Hip-Hop group formed in 1986 in Long Island, New York by Carlton Ridenhour(Chuck D) and William Drayton(Flavor Flav.) They were pioneers of a new breed of Hip-Hop, introducing thought provoking lyrics into their music.Up until the mid 1980’s the majority of Rap music was about bragging how wonderful you are, and partying. Public Enemy introduced politics into their lyrics, therefore garnering plenty of controversy and becoming a major influence on the development of the Hip-Hop genre.
One of the things that makes this song so special is the seventeen samples that are used, they were arranged and produced by ‘The Bomb Squad,’ who are an American Hip-Hop production team who worked closely with Public Enemy on this songs parent Album ‘Fear of a Black Planet.’ Up until this time artists didn’t have to get permission to clear samples, but things changed in 1991 when Irish singer Gilbert O’Sullivan(see also best songs 949 and 111) won a case against Rapper Biz Markie for sampling O’Sullivan’s ‘Alone Again(Naturally) on Markie’s ‘Alone Again.’ After that sampling became so expensive that artists would bring in session musicians to replicate sounds, so they would only have to pay songwriters as opposed to record labels.
‘I’ve got so much trouble on my mind, refuse to lose, here’s your ticket, hear the drummer get wicked.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
38-Stereophonics-Dakota.
2005-Number 1 single.
Best Bit-At 1.58.The Dakota has had many famous musical residents over the years including Leonard Bernstein, Bob Crewe, Roberta Flack, Judy Garland and John Lennon. In fact The Dakota was the home of John Lennon from 1973 until his murder in the archway of the building in 1980.
‘Dakota’ is taken from the Stereophonics fifth studio Album ‘Language,Sex,Violence,Other?’ The songs writer Kelly Jones wrote the lyrics in 2004 while the band were on tour in Vermilion, Ohio,U.S.,Jones was going to call the song Vermilion but decided to change the title when the groups Slipknot and then Mercury Rev both coincidentally released songs with that title. The name of the song was changed to Dakota, named after the apartment building in New York City.
The songs lyrics appear to be self explanatory,as the narrator looks back on a love affair that has ended,he reminisces about the good times they have had and wishes that they were still together.
The Stereophonics(see also best songs 764) were officially formed in 1992 and are still active today, but the two founding members go back even further because Kelly Jones and Stuart Cable(1970-2010) first met in 1986 when living on the same street in the Welsh village of Cwmaman.
‘You make me feel like the one, make me feel like the one.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
39-Nilsson-Without You.
1972-Number 1 single.
Best Bit-At 1.22. A word of advice for all the wannabe singers who take part in the mind numbing numerous talent shows on television, this is how you sing a ballad.
‘Without You’ was co-written by Tom Evans(1947-1983) and Pete Ham(1947-1975,) who were both members of the Welsh Rock band Badfinger. The original version of this song first appeared on Badfinger’s second studio Album, ‘No Dice’ in 1970. Pete Ham had written a song called ‘Is This Love’ but he wasn’t happy with the chorus, meanwhile Tom Evans had the lyrics ‘I can’t live if living is without you,’ but he had no verses, they put their heads together and came up with this. The lives of both Tom Evans and Pete Ham ended tragically, Ham committed suicide in 1975 by hanging himself and Evans also took his own life in 1983, also by hanging.
When Harry Nilsson(1941-1994) first heard the song he thought it was the Beatles, when he realised it wasn’t he decided to record it for his 1971 Album, ‘Nilsson Schmilsson.’ During a 1968 press conference the Beatles were asked what their favourite American group was, they answered Nilsson. Paul McCartney once described this song as,’the killer song of all time.’
Harry Nilsson(see also best songs 388) was born with congenital heart problems, he suffered a massive heart attack in 1993 which he survived, but on January 15,1994 he finally succumbed to heart failure at the age of 52.
‘No I can’t forget tomorrow when I think of all my sorrow.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
40-Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars-Uptown Funk.
2014-Number 1 single.
Best Bit-At 3.54.It took 66 years but finally a song reached Number 1 on Billboard with the word ‘Funk’ in the title.
Two songs with the word ‘Funky’ had previously topped the chart,’Funkytown’ in 1980 and ‘Play that Funky Music’ in 1976.
Uptown is American slang for the affluent side of a city or town, other famous songs that use Uptown in the title include ‘Uptown Girl,”Uptown Top Ranking,’ and ‘Uptown Uptempo Woman.’
‘Uptown Funk’ was co-written by Mark Ronson(see also best songs 806,) Bruno Mars and two of his long time collaborators, Philip Laurence and Jeff Bhasker. The song has been the subject of several lawsuits due to sampling disputes with the most successful being contested by Rudolph Taylor and Lonnie Simmons of The Gap Band who claimed similarities to their song ‘Oops Up Side Your Head,’ they won 17% of the songs royalties and are now credited as the songs co-writers. One sample that you can’t dispute after you listen to the song is the use of ‘All Gold Everything’ which peaked at Number 36 on Billboard in 2012 for the Rapper Trinidad James, he and that songs other writer Devon Gallapsy are also credited with writing ‘Uptown Funk.’
The name checking of the actress Michelle Pheiffer in the song relates to her role in the movie Scarface. Pheiffer said,’I was incredibly flattered. It was very cool, it was a little embarrassing at times, you know carpool with the kids, and the song comes on, or I’m in exercise class and the song comes on, but yeah I love the song.’
‘This hit, that ice cold Michelle Pheiffer, that white gold.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
41-Kraftwerk-Autobahn.
1974-Number 11 single.
Best Bit-At 13.07.If your planning on listening to this song in one sitting, then I suggest you take a packed lunch.
Who are the most influential group in Pop Music history, some say it’s the Beatles but you might be surprised if I told you many music critics think it’s this lot.
Kraftwerk(English meaning ‘power station’) were formed in Dusseldorf, Germany in 1970 by Ralf Hutter and Florian Schneider, they started out as an experimental Rock outfit which was very popular in West Germany at the time and dubbed by the press as ‘Krautrock.’ Gradually they began to embrace electronic instrumentation that included synthesizers, drum machines and vocoders. Their experimentation would lead to a body of work which was unique for it’s day, baffling many listeners and influencing many more.
It is not overstating the facts to say that Kraftwerk laid the foundations for the the electronic music that came out of the early 1980’s from bands such as Depeche Mode and New Order, they are also a major influence on Electronic Dance Music and Hip-Hop.
‘Autobahn’ is a celebration of driving, the English translation of the lyrics are.’We drive, drive, drive on the Autobahn. This was the bands breakthrough single and their first to use lyrics. In the UK their biggest success remains ‘The Model’ which was a UK Number 1 single in 1981.
‘Wir fahren fahren fahren auf der Autobahn.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
42-The Smiths-Panic
1986-Number 11 single.
Best Bit-At 1.33.If I had £1 for every time someone has sung this to me, I could afford to buy my own gallows.
‘Panic was co-written by Morrissey(lyrics) and Johnny Marr(music,) Marr has said that around that time Morrissey was into the song ‘Metal Guru’ by T.Rex so he based this songs guitar riff on that(see also best songs 940-673-222-167 and 72.)
Morrissey and Marr had been listening to the BBC Radio 1 ‘Newsbeat ‘ programme reporting about the Chernobyl Nuclear disaster that occurred on April 16,1986, as soon as the report was over the DJ Steve Wright played the song ‘I’m Your Man’ by Wham. This led Marr to think that the Radio station were not showing respect to the tragedy by playing an upbeat Pop song that was meant to have no serious meaning. Marr said, ‘We hear about Chernobyl, then seconds later we’re expected to jump around to ‘I’m Your Man.”This was probably the likely influence for Morrissey’s lyrics. The Smiths later commissioned a T-shirt featuring Wright’s portrait and the phrase ‘Hang the DJ.’
The song name checks places in Britain and Ireland where unrest(probably from youths) could occur because of the music being force fed to them,
‘Says nothing about my life.’
‘On the Leeds side-streets that you slip down. The provincial town’s you jog ’round.Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
43-Bobby Darin-Mack the Knife.
1959-Number 1 single.
Best Bit-At 2.04.By 1959 Bobby Darin had become a teen idol and was very reluctant to release this song as a single for fear of losing his teenage fan base, as this song originates from a 1928 opera and it’s subject matter is murder and rape.
‘Mack the Knife’ was composed by Kurt Weill(1900-1950,) with lyrics by Bertolt Brecht(1898-1956) for their 1928 music drama ‘Die Dreigroschenoper,’ or as it is known in English,’The Threepenny Opera.’ The dramas main character Mack the Knife is based on the highwayman Macheath from John Gay’s 1728 Ballad Opera ‘The Beggars Opera.’
After the second world war productions of The Threepenny Opera opened in America with lyrics translated into English by Marc Blitzstein. It was Louis Armstrong who recorded the first Jazz version of the song in 1956 having been encouraged by a Columbia records executive who thought it would make a good ‘Swing’ song.Armstrong improvised on the lyrics using American euphemisms and adding new lyrics. The Bobby Darin version is done in the same manner.I would also highly recommend the 1994 recording by Frank Sinatra and Jimmy Buffett from Sinatra’s ‘Duets 2’ Album.
Bobby Darin was born Walden Rodert Cassotto in East Harlem,New York City,May 14,1936, he died on December 20,1973, he had suffered from heart problems all his life.
‘Oh the shark babe has such teeth dear and he shows them pearly white.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
44-ABBA-Dancing Queen.
1976-Number 1 single.
Best Bit-At 0.01.What is Pop Music’s infatuation with the age of 17? You can probably think of a song right now that sings about someone of that age, and if you listen closely to song lyrics you will become aware how often 17 is mentioned. I personally don’t think there is any hidden meanings or any great mystery, it is simply that singing ‘seventeen’ fits in so much easier to a beat and lyrics than any other number.Mystery solved.
‘Dancing Queen’ was co-written by the male ABBA group members Benny Anderson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, songwriting credit is also given to ABBA’s manager Stig Anderson(no relation,) for his lyrical input. The song was inspired by Phil Spector’s ‘Wall of Sound’ arrangements and the 1974 Disco hit ‘Rock Your Baby'(see also best songs 64.) Other inspirations cited are the drumming on Dr. John’s 1972 Album ‘Dr. John’s Gumbo,’ and the songs intro echoes ‘Sing my way Home,’ which is a 1971 song from the American duo Delaney & Bonnie.
The lyrics tell of a young girl realising her potential, she goes to the discotheque to have a good time, knowing that she could make any man she wants hers, but she is in charge and they will play by her rules.
‘Dancing Queen’ gave ABBA there only Billboard Number 1 single, while in the UK it is one of their nine chart toppers.

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
45-Danny Williams-Moon River.
1961-Number 1 single.
Best Bit-At 2.14.Even though Johnny Mercer wrote the lyrics to fit the film’s story, they are semi autobiographical.
‘Moon River’ was written for the 1961 movie ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s,’ it was performed in the film by Audrey Hepburn. The music was written by Henry Mancini(1924-1994,) with lyrics by Johnny Mercer(1909-1976.)
There are many well known versions,it became the signature tune of Andy Williams who would always open his television show with a short burst of the song.Henry Mancini released an instrumental version which reached Number 11 on Billboard in 1961,simultaneously American Soul singer Jerry Butler took his recording to Number 11 as well. In the UK South African singer Danny Williams(1942-2005) took the song to Number 1,becoming the first African to top the UK chart.
When Johnny Mercer(see also best songs 934 and 281) was young he would look out at the river which overlooked his home in Savannah,Georgia, it was called ‘The Back River,’Mercer would dream of crossing the river to start his life’s journey,to which there would be no going back. The line ‘My huckleberry friend’ is a reference to a childhood friend who Mercer would go picking huckleberries with as a child.’The Back River’ has since been renamed ‘Moon River’ in honour of Johnny Mercer.
‘Two drifters off to see the world, there’s such a lot of world to see.’
