Bernie Edwards(1952-1996) and Nile Rogers first met in 1970,they officially became Chic in 1976,the additions of drummer Tony Thompson(1954-2003) and female vocalist Norma Jean Wright came later.In a very productive period between 1977-1983 Edwards and Rogers wrote and produced 16 Albums for artists such as Chic,Diana Ross,Debbie Harry,The Sister Sledge and Johnny Mathis.
‘Good Times’ is one of the most sampled songs in Pop Music history.The first ever Rap record to be a major hit,’Rappers Delight’ by the Sugarhill Gang borrows heavily from it,John Deacon’s bass line on Queen’s ‘Another One Bites The Dust’ was inspired by Deacon listening to Bernie Edwards and the song was heavily sampled in one of ‘Hip-Hop’s’ most influential songs,’The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel,’ by Grandmaster Flash.

Best Bit-At 4.19.After 45 years of listening to this song I have finally got around to googling what a ‘Jasmine’ is.
The original version of this song was written and recorded by the Soft Rock duo Seals and Crofts who had great success taking the song to Number 6 on Billboard in 1972.Jim Seals and Dash Crofts had both been members of the American band The Champs alongside future Country Music star Glen Campbell,all three left in 1963 to form the new group ‘Glen Campbell and the GCs.’Seals and Crofts finally became a duo in 1969 and last performed together in 2004.
In 1973 The Isley Brothers(see also best songs 823 and 382) covered the song in a harder rock and soulful style for their Album ‘3+3.’Ernie Isley has received critical acclaim for his guitar playing on the track.

Best Bit-At 0.01.Two UK Number 1 singles to date have been banned from airplay while holding the top spot,’Je t’aime moi non plus’ by Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin(see best songs 467) and ‘Relax’ from Frankie Goes To Hollywood,had those in charge known what this song was really about,it would have been the third.
‘Are ‘Friends’ Electric’ is heavily influenced by the writers Phillip K. Dick and William S. Burroughs as Numan is a big fan of both. Numan(see also best songs 772 and 232) has said,’The song is about a robot prostitute and had the BBC known at the time,they wouldn’t have play-listed it.It was a futurist version of getting pornography in the post.’
The song is set in a future world and is about man living among robots and how you can lock yourself in a dark room away from any other humans. Numan has been diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome and many of his songs deal with themes of technology and isolation.
In 2002 music producer Richard X came up with the idea of sampling the music of ‘Are ‘Friends’ Electric’ with the lyrics of the Adina Howard song ‘Freak Like Me,’the vocals were provided by The Sugababes and the song became a UK Number 1.
